Re: Would you vote the same again?

Would you care to enlighten us on what has happened so far that has convinced you? If I can add my response to this question: 1) David Cameron and George Osborne have both resigned; 2) Theresa May is our new Prime Minister; 3) Some EU leaders are threatening "punishment" for UK voting leave; 4) Som...

Re: Guaranteed Basic Income for All

At last. A major UK party taking a serious look at a universal basic income: http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/sep/14/jeremy-corbyn-to-launch-review-into-universal-basic-income" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This is all happening even quicker than I imagined. Re: Accy Clarets to Chelsea - Sat 27th August ko 3pm

Sorry due to now having to work please can I cancel my 2 seats to Chelsea away and I also have the 2 match day tickets for sale under 23 if anybody is interested, sorry for any inconvenience. Hi Joe, do you still have a spare U23 ticket? I'm down in London - an Accy-exile. I can meet outside the gr...

Re: The dreaded C word.

Hi Foshiznik, all best wishes from another "northern man in the south." I'm coming up to 5 months post-heart attack. Had an excellent session in the gym this morning. I know I'm not yet "Sean Dyche" fit, but I feel I'm heading that way. Not bad for 62 year old. I'm sure you will also get through you...

Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!

If you are all so intelligent, why don't you all start up a new political party and sort out the so called problems? Great idea. How do we go about setting up the " Bee Hole End Democrats ?" I assume we will be "democrats." Is that OK with everyone. How will we elect a leader? Who will be in the "f...

Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!

Some good comments: Hampstead - I agree Osborne cannot call emergency budget. When new PM is appointed - I favour Theresa May - Osborne will not be Chancellor any longer. Of course, he was wrong to call "project fear" pre-referendum. IT - I agree, to great extent with Independent analysis. I think I...

Re: Guaranteed Basic Income for All

Hey Guys, I've been busy today - but I was enjoying this debate. Rowls has raised some good points re incentives. If UBI is possible to work the incentives must be there for everyone to make it work. There's no benefit in a system that creates disincentives for the potentially "high contributors" to...

Re: Guaranteed Basic Income for All

It would depend on where you were/your children are on the income spectrum, of course. If both were anywhere in the bottom half (indeed probably anywhere outside the top third), statistically speaking it would be a fairly close run thing. Additionally, the main inflation indices don't fully take in...

Re: Guaranteed Basic Income for All

There have been massive advances in technological innovation which have ostensibly improved our living standards over the years but the reality is that most people in their 20's or 30's are poorer than their parents, and at the current rate, always will be; at which point one has to consider and, y...

Re: Guaranteed Basic Income for All

I told you I was hopeless at articulating social arguments. Let me have another go at post 78. Essentially, by means of introducing a Universal Basic Income, society would be making the statement: "Society values you - unconditionally. Whether or not you choose value society in return is entirely y...

No, I think the bench would be moved to be opposite the Bob Lord. ;)

Re: Guaranteed Basic Income for All

What an unbelievably enlightening and persuasive argument for a BI. To my shame, bogged down in the theory and economics of it all, it never crossed my mind the millions doing worthwhile unpaid work who get nothing back for it. Not just in your circumstances, but all those doing bits and bobs for f...

Re: Guaranteed Basic Income for All

If GBI is possible - and, I believe we have to take "politics" out of our thinking as a first premise - automation is irrelevant. I contend that automation is neither a pre-requisite or a contributor to the possibility of GBI. In recent years we have experienced unimaginable progress in automation. ...

Re: Guaranteed Basic Income for All

We are not far short of affording a BI with our current welfare spend (see my post above). On your other point, I generally consider flat taxes to be abhorrent, but I would find them a lot more tolerable against a backdrop of a generous BI. It's a sacrifice I'd be willing to make (albeit through gr...

Re: Guaranteed Basic Income for All

Bobbins. If we are all receiving basic income (for doing nothing) where does the money come from? Flat rate taxation is a great idea. Simplify the tax system. Get rid of all the "allowances," "tax avoidance" and "tax evasion" - and get many of the tax accountants doing something useful with their br...

Re: The dreaded C word.

My thoughts are with you, Foshiznik. Mon 29-Feb I was taken to A&E with chest pains (as posted earlier on PSA thread). In my case it was a heart attack. Whatever the illness it takes time to adjust to the new health situation. This board is great for sharing the important things in life. Best wishes...

Thanks, Goodclaret. I was at Brentford last Friday night. I was grinning like a big kid standing on the terraces - and that was before the kick off.

New joiner signing in. I've been a Claret since mid-1960s. I nearly signed up on another message board following the excitement of Wembley - but delayed. I didn't like anyone to think I was a glory hunter! I'm looking forward to being on this new message board. UTC.
