It's Gonna Be a Classic

Post by ontario claret » Wed Jan 04, 2017 11:14 pm

The weekend schedule of NFL play-off games included one between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants, played on the "Frozen Tundra" of Lambeau Field. We're in the middle of an extended cold snap over here, and it looks like gametime temperatures might be below zero Fahrenheit at kick-off in Green Bay. Two traditional teams, both with great quarterbacks, Odell Beckham, probably the best receiver in the NFL right now, on the Giant side, and Jordy Nelson, a very under-rated player, with the Pack. Turn off the heat in your home, dress in layers, and experience a real North American tradition. You might even consider staging your own tailgate party. :D

Looking forward to the weekends games Ontario! Some tasty matching for sure.

Gutted for the Raiders after such a long road back to the playoffs they have their chances torn away with the injury to Carr. Genuinely think they'd have gone far into the playoffs.

I think you can't look past Pats for the whole thing, GB building up steam at the right time too.

I think it's a year too soon for Dallas but it's been that kind of season so it wouldn't surprise me if they won the whole thing.

Go Pack Go! But I can't see our defence holding up. Might beat the Giants because their offence is nothing special, but holding off Dallas or Atlanta? I have my doubts.

I've actually started watching some NFL in recent months. I'm still a bit lost but been enjoying it. Haven't picked my team yet.

I tried to watch the super bowl a few years ago and couldn't get into it

Too many breaks in play and seems to go on forever

Got into American football back in the mid 80s when Ch4 first started covering it.
We all had to pick teams. I opted for New England. They reached the Bowl final but lost to Chicago. Liked watching it ever since but, got out of the habit the last few years.

I'm still sulking that the Redskins blew the playoffs.
Can't see beyond Pats for the SB.
Hoping they've all sussed out Prescott and Elliot for next year, they are in our division.

Dallas has real questions in their defence, and so do the Pack. Raiders are down to their 3rd string QB, but Houston has problems at QB, too. If I was to take a dark horse, it would be the Steelers. They're healthy, and have a tremendous defence. Seattle might sneak in, too, but losing Earl Thomas at safety was a real blow. Remember, defence wins championships.

Also try to follow the draft this spring. It tells you what parts of their team clubs are trying to strengthen.

I suspect 'Cleveland Brown pants' will need a whole new team then

A big part of Cleveland's problem was that they went too young. Turned over more than half their team from last year. RG3 has finally matured, so I look for bigger and better things from them next year. (I used to be a fan of the old Browns, the present day Ravens.)

Dolphins to turn over the Steelers in Pittsburg then the Cheifs in Kansas and to smash New England in the AFC Championship game.

Oh and then to take out Green Bay in the Superbowl.

Go Phins.

Snap Buxton. I, too, became a Pats fan when they were a bit rubbish (despite getting to the SB in '85). Think The Fridge did for them that year.

Hoping the Pats, with home field advantage, can go all the way again this year....with or without ball deflating shenanigans!!!!

Johnny Football has left this planet. Sad case, that. He was over-hyped, and got to believe his press clippings. Playing at Texas A&M, who play in a $480 million stadium (remember, this is COLLEGE football), didn't help, either.

Braindead, The Fish are going nowhere. They'll be lucky to keep it within 3 touchdowns. It's going to be freezing in Pittsburgh, too. Those beach boys don't like the cold.

You Brits should be jumping all over Pittsburgh at you neighbourhood betting shop. "Big Ben" is primed to do his thing at QB this weekend. It might be his last chance.

Aren't the Packers owned by the local community? And in comparison with the other cities, Green Bay is a tiny unfashionable backwater. That gets them my vote.

Every club in the NFL has a chance of getting good, because of the draft. Just don't tell that to the Bills.

And the salary cap. The richer teams cannot hog all the talent because they would break their cap so there is a rough balance to the talent in the 32 franchises.

Some teams just seem to manage the cap far better than others. The draft, which rewards failure by giving the worst team 1st pick, also helps maintain the ongoing attempt to balance the talent pool.

But having a great Quarterback is what makes a huge difference. Not all the best QBs win the Superbowl but you almost certainly won't win a Superbowl without one

Or the Lions. If there was a "Darwin Award" for how to screw things up in a new and origianl way, the Lions would get it more often than not. They are at least in the playoffs this year - but they've been in the playoffs 10 times in the last 58 seasons, and won just one game. What a shame. ;) Packers' playoff record isn't great, mainly due to getting to overtime and losing on the first possession, but it's infinitely better than the Lions'.

True enough, but no-one expects anything of the Browns. The Lions ought to be good, but aren't. Tampa Bay have won the NFC North (Central) since the last time the Lions won it.

When you say "The Browns", you have to differentiate between the present Browns, and the old Browns, which are the Baltimore Ravens. Art Modell, the Browns' owner back in the '80s, decided he wasn't making enough money, (and his non-football interests were going bankrupt), so he engineered a move to Baltimore, which the Colts had abandoned. The Ravens since have won a Super Bowl. The new Browns, starting from scratch, have never found the winning formula, despite wasting the the top pick several times (Tim Crouch, Johnny Football, DBs actively involved in criminal activity, you name, they've done it.) They even brought in Mike Holmgren, who had a sterling record in Green Bay, to oversee everything, but nothing has worked. There was a glimmer of hope at the end of this year, so I expect them to go at least 4-12 next rear. I think they finally have the right guy running things, and at least they didn't tie Detroit's 0-16 record. RG3 has matured into a good NFL quarterback. And that's ALWAYS the #1 thing.

When I was about 5 years old, the Browns were wining everything with Jim Brown at running back, and Paul Brown coaching. They also had Lou "The Toe" Grozza place kicking.

NFL success is a finely tuned thing. You need a balance of savvy veterans and hot-shot rookies. The veterans run the clubhouse and keep the rookies under control. That's why the closest thing to a dynasty recently have been the Patriots. Tom Brady is the lord and master, Belichick is the resident genius, and the fringe players never stay more than a year or two at a time. They even traded Jamie Collins, a top LB, in the middle of the season to the Browns, this year. No other team could get away with that.

Incredible that The Giants are behind in this game and much less that they haven't yet scored a Touchdown but that Hail Mary from the Packers then was sensational. Super from Rodgers and Cobb.

Falcons v Seattle live at the moment, hoping Atlanta can get the win at home but think it's a really close game, closer than most think.
