Old and grumpy

Post by Firthy » Tue Jan 10, 2017 8:52 am

I'm worried because I'm in danger of becoming a grumpy old fart. I know it's happening but don't seem to be able to stop it happening.

I retired earlier than intended because of the present cultures in the workplace like political correctness, health and safety, policies and procedures, blame culture, lack of common sense, never ending constant reviews and inquests (always negative) of current practices and ways of doing things better etc.

Lack of patience when driving with things like people stopping in dangerous places like brow of a hill, halfway around a bend etc. to answer their phone and holding traffic up for the next 10 mins, in the belief it's safer than driving and talking. Inconsiderate and uncourteous drivers who totally disregard all other road users. Pedestrians who wear ear phones and think they can just walk across the road without even looking. The list goes on.

But what's really sad is my biggest gripe of all is my loathing for reality tv programmes such as big brother, I'm a celebrity get me out of here etc. and the current crop of film/tv/media stars etc. who are almost unrecognisable with their pumped up lips and identical pearly white perfectly even (they're too big for my mouth) teeth.

I hardly watch the news any more because it's nearly always doom and gloom and so depressing, someone has to be to blame for everything that happens in the world. I mean, how dare the tory government allow so much rain to fall and flood these poor villages.

I hate all the adverts encouraging people to claim compensation for something which is probably because of their own stupidity. The word accident should be removed from the english language because there is no such thing these days.

On the plus side I'm happy that Burnley are doing well and the fact I record everything on Sky so I can fast forward past the adverts :D

Rant over. Have a laugh at me and feel free to disagree :o

As an insurance claims bod I can tell you that you can get rid of either health & safety legislation or compensation lawyers, but not both. A lack of the former leads to the latter.

Don't worry about it, just nature taking its course. You can be sure when you were young and carefree and everything was great, that your grandparents were grumbling about how lazy, crass and soft your generation was.

I worked at Main Gas for 30 years. On my first day there was a fire engine and an ambulance in the yard because a maintenance engineer had fallen into a trike tank and been killed over the weekend. I knew at that point that factories were (and still are) dangerous places so don't complain to me about "health and safety". Thankfully no-one else was ever killed at Main Gas as a result of an accident at work.

I think the Main Gas Accident was exceptionally tragic to say the least. I am a Health & Safety Manager and, whilst I would never see anyone use dodgy equipment or take iffy shortcuts and generally champion safe working, I have to say that 50% of H&S legislation is over the top crap, designed to keep jobsworth, newly-qualified graduates quiet in a job, assessing for places like CHAS, Safecontractor, etc - thanks EU!
I must be grumpy too, as I identify completely with Firthy - the one thing missing was dick 'eds "undertaking".

After listening to some woman on Five live this morning complaining about how people were dissuaded from running I'm also falling into the same 'old and grumpy' train of thought, which is no mean feat at 35.

Did she moan about teenagers shouting at runners, folk cat calling or being antagonised by dogs chasing runners..? No. She was upset by the way some people might LOOK at runners, which may put them off. If you don't have a thick enough skin to deal with people looking at you, how are you going to deal with the British weather ffs!

I'm not a fan of the term generation Snowflake but this kind of pish is exactly what keeps momentum in the term.

Firthy, just let it all go over your head becasue it isn't worth worrying about and there is beggar all that you can do about it anyway except raise your blood pressure.
There are plenty of others who will do the worrying for you and also think that they can change things. You only need to read this board to know that, however, in the end, people do what they want to do and, I regret that consideration for others is very low on the list of priorities for a lot of people.
Enjoy life, you are only here once and you need to give the ball a bloody good kick!

I've had a few spats about this over the years with folks of an elder generation.

They argue that I'm just turning into my parents, whereas I argue that modern culture is genuinely infuriating and proper s***.

Firthy you missed:
1/. Whilst Burnley are doing well there are certain things need improving,
Why can I not buy a ticket for the Chelsea game online? I bet they want me to ring that expensive number.
2/. Young people with money building two-storey extensions right up to my boundary.
3/. Gas men running riot on my street, installing a new gas main. Cars trapped on drives for days.
No plates over driveways so scores of vehicles having to be parked on the road and being vandalised.
National Grid saying; it's not our problem.
4/. Wives laughing at us as we get grumpier and grumpier. Kids who gleefully buy us mugs with
the words "Grumpy old git" embossed on them.
5/. The cold and the need for long johns and vests at matches. You look around and some lads have a T Shirt on!
6/. The inability to charge at the visiting fans when we score, because everyone else is faster than you!
You also know that when you would finally got there you'd be the only one.
7/. Why oh why do people use social media to broadcast their every move, meal and thought?
Then they complain when somebody says something nasty about them. You've lost your right to privacy.
We did manage to function before t'internet and social media.
8/. I forgot to take my phone to Sunderland and you would think I had committed treason.
What would happen if there was an emergency I was asked 10 times.
What I always used to do I replied, find a phone-box.
I must admit I had forgotten how rare those are now!
9/. Diving footballers.
Footballers rolling on the floor as if shot by a sniper and then within minutes sprinting down the line.
£30 tickets. Cars driving at you at the Park View.

I cheer myself up by admitting that I least I know I am grumpy.

Oh and cyclists coming from behind you at 30mph on a footpath with no warning or bell
making the dog and I jump! He got a right mouthful, especially when he stopped to have a go back.
Cheeky git! Soon sorted him.

Agree 100% Firthy - I'm a pensioner and grumpy TV adverts drive me bonkers even bbc have constant adverts for upcoming programs which are mostly complete tosh (in my opinion). Driving is unpleasant too many vehicles, try not to go out at busy times as its near on gridlock. More and more rules and regs pushed on to us. I could go on theres plenty more to moan about - at least the clarets are doing OK.

Firthy.........I could have written that!! Exactly how I feel about things. ......and I would add how saddened I am by how rude and discourteous people seem to be.....and not just the young generation either! Lost count the number of times I have held a door open for someone and they do not even acknowledge you are there or they look at you as if you're from another planet. What has happened to people in such a short space of time?? We used to have amber gamblers at traffic lights ...not any more....they just go through on red!!...and where are the police???....when did you last see a copper on the beat (conspicuous by their absence). I could go on!!

Apologies to BFC. You can now finally get tickets for the Chelsea match in the CFS online.
I's taken about 4-days now mind.
Today's problem: Sunderland replay tickets it says click online here
and of course this match does not appear.

Airports are my biggest gripe. The biggest concentration of stupid people there is. People who wait to sort them selves out at the conveyor belt. Take 10 mins to empty their pockets and take a belt off. No you cant take that 7 litre of water with you ffs. Yes take you shoes off. No you cant keep your mobile in your pocket. Idiots.

I'm with you brothers and sisters. All of the above and you can add the way people switch into some kind of trance when trailing round supermarkets. (No I haven't tried one of those counter up things). Anyone else get irritated watching soap actors pretend to drink from
a mug that is clearly empty. Oh, and why build garages that are not wide enough to comfortably reverse your car into.

My best decision was ten years ago when I was told I was going to be a granddad for the first time. I told my (at the time) 25 year old son I was not happy about that. It was the truth, I had no desire to be a granddad or even called granddad. A compromise was found and I became known as Grumps, I can live with that, and now both my two grandsons make me smile when they shout out with glee "Grumps is here". I guess I am from a generation where my granddad wore a string vest, had a woodbine hanging from his lips and was OLD! Something I am not that keen on being.....yet ;) .

I feel so much better knowing that I'm not alone. Work really pi$$ing me off but can't retire until the youngest has been to Uni.

Now when I make a comment about something I get told I sound just like my dad.
