Club say he is in a stable condition.
The Club can confirm that Ryan Mason sustained a skull fracture in our fixture at Chelsea this afternoon.
He was taken to St Mary’s Hospital where he has undergone surgery.
Ryan is in a stable condition and is expected to remain in hospital for the next few days.
Everyone at the Club would like to express their sincere thanks for the excellent and swift care given to Ryan by both the Accident and Emergency department and Neurosurgery Unit at St Mary’s Hospital.
A further update will be issued tomorrow.

Re: Ryan Mason
As someone who has suffered from a fractured skull I wish him well! Was by far the worst part of my life and I pretty much lost 2 years of my life and it changed me as a person. I got smashed over the head by someone (wasn't a local) who had a bottle of vodka with them in the pub, all because I beat him at pool for a fiver! Worse thing is he did it as I'd just got outside the pub to go to work on Christmas Eve so had my back to him and when I fell forward I smashed my face on the kerb and also allegedly nearly got run over too ffs I now have a slight dent in my skull and a Harry potter like scar! I'm not sure if I changed subconsciously due to that happening or whether it damaged part of my brain that controllers certain things.
This happend in 1999 and didn't realise it until a couple of years ago but every time someone walked past me I'd immediately turn round to make sure they weren't going to do something it was so weird i did it all the time! Still do it nowadays every so often. But hopefully it's not a bad case scenario because is I wouldn't wish what I went through on anyone!

Pretty shameful to invent 'battling for his life' though, just to get clicks.

Cheers mate. The 2 years was when it was really bad for me and I can't actually remember most of that time. To be honest I don't think I've ever recovered from it or ever will! It changed my personality and I find a lot of things difficult to deal with that average Joe would find a doddle. But it is what it is!Claretmatt4 wrote:Glad to hear you made a full recovery West Mids, 2 years is a long time though!

Re: Ryan Mason
Yeah he got a few years and a personal touch when he got out! Not saying that what I did was right but at the time I was very angry and it's the only thing that made sense! Looking back on it now I'd probably still do it because I hate cowards! Though 2 wrongs don't make a right.IndigoLake wrote:Bloody hell, I hope he did some serious time for that. Re: Ryan Mason
Reading between the lines I suspect that he had a depressed skull fracture, the same injury suffered by Petr Cech while playing for Chelsea. Cech was hit in the head by the knee of Stephen Hunt of Reading, who then went on to play for Hull City. A strange set of connections.
In a displaced fracture the broken bones are pushed inwards and this increases the risk of pressure on the brain - there may also be bleeding from blood vessels below the fracture which will also press on the brain tissue. Hence it is important to elevate the fractured bones and to allow any bleeding to drain, to reduce the pressure.
If Ryan Mason has such an injury, thankfully he is likely to recover quickly. Although there is a risk of long term neurological / psychological injury, the speed with which he underwent surgery should mean the outcome is good, as it was for Cech.

So there is a chance that Mason would have to wear protective headgear if (hopefully when) he returns to playing?KeighleyClaret wrote:Reading between the lines I suspect that he had a depressed skull fracture, the same injury suffered by Petr Cech while playing for Chelsea. Doubt that would work for an outfield player, as he would possibly not be able to head the ball.IndigoLake wrote:So there is a chance that Mason would have to wear protective headgear if (hopefully when) he returns to playing?
Hope I am wrong but I think that this could likely be the end of his playing career.

Re: Ryan Mason
I'd suspect his season is almost certainly over, whilst they wait for him to heal and then ensure he will be fit to play again.
They won't rush this one and if he returns this season I'll be surprised.
The long term result of his recovery is more important then his career right now.

Re: Ryan Mason
Ryan Mason has been back in training in pre-season and he & Hull have sought the opinion of two doctors who have given them conflicting information. They are going to see a third doctor in Liverpool this week before deciding whether he should ever play football again.
If the risk is considered too great then it looks as though he'll have to retire, but his long term health is by far the most important.
Leonid Slutsky said: ""It is a difficult situation on Mason, we have a difference of opinion and we are seeing a third doctor in Liverpool on Monday. He will have decision about his future. For me he is a big hero but now it is not just about football but about his life. He wants to play but it is not an easy situation. He must decide not only about himself but about his family as well. It is more than football."

let's just hope the right decision is made and he has a long and happy life
Re: Ryan Mason
If there's even a 1% chance it may effect his health, then sadly it's a no go.
Hopefully whatever happens, he can remain in football someway ( commentator, pundit, physio, coach etc ) but live a safe and happy life whilst watching his children grow up

Re: Ryan Mason
I'd forgotten all about this.
Good to see they're taking all the necessary precautions with him and whatever the outcome is, in the long term he will at least be ok and healthy.

Re: Ryan Mason
If the third Doctor gives the all clear, it would still surely be very difficult to get himself back out on to the pitch, no matter how much he loves playing the game.
Whilst two Doctors may give the go ahead, the medical opinion of the other could well play on his mind.
How the injury compared to that of Czech, I don't know, but playing in midfield, he'd be more likely than not to encounter a clash of heads, elbow or other at some point, plus the constant heading of the ball.
Perhaps some sort of Czech type head gear would be the way forward. It must be a hugely tough decision for him.

You do realise that's about 3 players a weekend in the premier league alone?
I'd not be taking that risk every week.
