Huddersfield or Reading
Huddersfield or Reading
Who will be the biggest threat in the PL ? I'd prefer a local derby but think Huddersfield are a similar sort of club ( perhaps not quite as much history) so would they be after similar sort of players and with a similar locational pull.

Re: Huddersfield or Reading
I'd suggest they have every bit as big a history as us, in fact more so. They did win the league in three consecutive seasons in the 1920s, the first team to achieve that. It's the only time they've won it and they match us with one FA Cup success.Blackrod wrote:Who will be the biggest threat in the PL ? I think they are a similar club in size though and it would be a better trip than Reading, certainly given that we've lost Sunderland, Middlesbrough & Hull while gaining Newcastle and Brighton. We could do without another southern trip.

Interesting side note - it was mentioned on the radio that if it's Reading that win today then Newcastle's nearest away day will be Turf Moor next season....!ClaretTony wrote:I'd suggest they have every bit as big a history as us, in fact more so. Re: Huddersfield or Reading
Surely Huddersfield every day of the week.
With the magnificent Magic Rock Brewery tap, its as a good an away day as one could wish for.
Reading by comparison is a miserable trip (unless its the away leg of a play-off semi-final).
Reaching the Prem will be a difficult mountain for either to climb, but given Huddersfield managed to achieve a minus goal difference in reaching the play-offs, suggests that they would need to do a lot of work in particular, to prepare for the Prem.

Heart Huddersfield head reading.
Re: Huddersfield or Reading
This is a massive game in my house. My wife is a town fan.
My father in law is already down in London. My brother in law is on holiday in Jersey and is supposed to be flying into London for the match, however fog has delayed his flight which might be cancelled. I would be gutted for him as I would have hated to miss out on our Wembley victory.
I also like town because they are not a loaded club. The chairman has a few bob but he
does not throw money at the club. they are very well run.
Also they made 10 changes against Birmingham haha

Absolutely, in the season just finished we only played north of Burnley twice (Sunderland & Middlesbrough) with Hull just about directly east of us. All three are gone.Selby Claret wrote:Interesting side note - it was mentioned on the radio that if it's Reading that win today then Newcastle's nearest away day will be Turf Moor next season....!

Re: Huddersfield or Reading
I agree with tim_noone.
Would love it if Udders made it, but I think it will be Reading. Their Leeds Road ground was very similar to our Turf in the 50's.
As for the FA Cup they have had one win and four losses in the Final so their history is a bit better than ours although they may have spent less time in the top flight, I am not sure on that.

A lot of similarities between the two grounds particularly their side which looked a bit like the Longside.mdd2 wrote:I agree with tim_noone.

I don't know, but I think we might do them on seasons in the top flight. In all my years of watching football they've only had two seasons in 70/71 and 71/72.
Re: Huddersfield or Reading
Huddersfield for me. Reading being down South would be able to attract players we would be in for where as I think Town would be like us. A northern outpost that will struggle to attract players but who knows UTC

Re: Huddersfield or Reading
I have a mate who's a town fan and he absolutely loves it. Been on the rollercoaster with him all season so I'd be delighted if they made it.
Also think they are more likely to struggle than Reading who, as a club at least, have some PL experience.
Always nice to have another northern town club in the top flight.
In terms of history, I wasn't aware they had won 3 first division titles, impressive.
Given one of ours was in football's heyday, and our most successful period arguably was also in that era, I would say we have more success, but obviously on paper we don't.
Come on Town!

'Udds every time. A mate of mine is a big fan and beside himself with excitement about today.
Also, more likely to go down again than Reading and, should SD move on, we could do worse than Japp Stam as next manager should the Terriers get promoted

Re: Huddersfield or Reading
Huddersfield for many of the above. And it would probably be our most local game?
With the size of the two clubs, the location and the yorkshire lancashire thing who knows it could become a decent top flight rivalry.
The more unfashionable, northern, town clubs in the premier league the better for me.

Re: Huddersfield or Reading
Claretmatt4. To win the first division three seasons on the bounce as they did in the 20's is more impressive than all the other modern day successes. In those days they had 21 like minded teams to play whereas in the modern game it has been against 5 or 6 similar teams £sd wise and 15 also rans £sd wise and present evidence is that if you have the dosh you have a better chance of success than if you haven't. Having said all that about £sd I have googled Herbert Chapman where there is smoke but no obvious fire regarding his financial dealings at Leeds City and later.

Cracking local derby, in fact they could be our new rivals, well it's going to be a long time till we play them down the road!

Re: Huddersfield or Reading
FCBurnley, I'm surprised you've not shown a wish on here for a Huddersfield to win today, given your connection with the club, although it was a few years ago?.
I hope they win today. On a different note, I sat next to a nice old man on a Central Motors coach going to a Wembley Cup Final in the 60s. While discussing football he told me his name was Redman and he played in the famous Huddersfield team of the 20s, which had won the league titles. Made my day having the privilege of meeting him.

Re: Huddersfield or Reading
My brother in laws flight was cancelled and no other flights to London in time for the match. Gutted for him.
Hope town do it. He has watched town from the bottom league to the verge of the top.
Much more fun than reading

Longside, open terrace behind the goal and covered terrace behind the other goal. Very similar to Turf Moor.ClaretTony wrote:A lot of similarities between the two grounds particularly their side which looked a bit like the Longside.

Huddersfield - 45 miles away if you take the M62 route. Only 26 or so if you take the Kebs route. Lancs/Yorks derby too.

Huddersfield for me every time, nice easy local away day, plus Reading are just the dullest, most uninspiring club I can think of.

Sad that I am, I've just checked Google Maps to see which way they send you, having put in directions from the Turf to their ground.TractorFace wrote:Huddersfield - 45 miles away if you take the M62 route. Only 26 or so if you take the Kebs route. Lancs/Yorks derby too.
They suggest the non-motorway route of 25.3 miles suggesting it takes 1 hr 2 mins - the alternative route (M62) shows 46.3 miles with also a time of 1 hr 2 mins. To be honest I'd never consider the motorway route.
