Plenty of fine pubs in Liverpool but I recommend the Ship & Mitre - 5 minutes from Lime St.

Also the Roscoe Head.

Not to be confused with the Roscoe Arms.

All these pubs are near the Cathedral Quarter - It's a great little crawl.

Enjoy yourselves!

Not sure how near it is to the ground but the Philharmonic is an amazing pub. Like stepping back in time. Even the bogs are cool

Dispensary, Fly in Loaf, Roscoe Head and Philarmonic are all on the same street which is a 10 minute taxi ride from the ground.

There's a fair few others on the same road or very nearby too.

Ye Cracke and The Pilgrim are in the same area as the others mentioned. You can't go wrong around there.

some crackers already mentioned but I'll add the Caledonia (5 mins walk from the phil). They've done it up so the washing machines have gone but the beer is good.

also worth making the trip to the docks to visit the baltic fleet. dead easy to get a taxi to the ground from here as well.

back in town, if the weather's nice, the kazimier gardens is a good sport for a good booze.

far too many to list really.

Dale street area also good ( depending on where you land in Liverpool. Rigby's, Lion (slight detour), Vernon, Excelsior and the afore mentioned Ship & mitre.

Peter Kavanaghs on Egerton Street. 5 rotating real ales on draft and a historic interior worth checking out. There are a couple of clarets who are locals.

Great stuff much appreciated. So many pubs so little time.

I've actually puked up in the philharmonic bogs in 1989 when I overdid it at an early charlatans gig at Liverpool poly.

The only pub in Merseyside and one of only five UK pubs to appear in every edition of the Camra Good Beer Guide since first published in 1974.

So The Roscoe Head obviously.

To suggest a few that haven't been mentioned, The Newington Temple on Bold Street has a good selection of beer though its expensive (as are so many boozers in the city centre now). The Shipping Forecast and Buyers Club have decent ale too. All three are within walking distance of Lime Street.

The Caledonia and Peter Kavanagh's are great shouts. Cracking pubs.

Cross the Dispensay off your list the landlord is a nutcase.
5 of us Claret's went in on Saturday, two caught us up as they'd been shopping and sat down. didn't gaet a drink as we were 3/4 way through and sat down near us as we were stood. One put a bottle of water on the table but did not drink it. She is only 23.
The crazed landlord came round and put the Vs in her face saying she was doing him over by not buying a drink then shuttled back behind bar quick and left his dragon to take our stick.

Too many better boozers nearby so please boycott

The landlord of The Dispensary has a bit of a reputation. Take a look at the one-star reviews on Trip Advisor: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractio ... gland.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Now you're asking - all a little bit hazy

I think it was a Cavendish paleish ale we settled on in there
Prices - I'd be guessing but all seemed pretty reasonable - 3quid ish I think. I shall consult the more sensible members of our group for more reliable info.

The pies were awesome though - £2.50
Scouse pie the winner followed by pork and chorizo then pork and black pudding.

Sorry to hear about the problems with the Dispensary. I have been in three times and the ale has always been spot on. The guy behind the bar was a bit quiet as I seem to remember -- but certainly not abusive or rude. But I'll stand by the opinion of a Claret and swerve it in future (not like it is the only pub in town). You might want to alert CAMRA re your experience as they reckon to base their listings on the overall experience of a pub in addition to excellence of the ale on offer.

Just ploughed through the Tripadvisor reviews. So many people can't be wrong. The only thing I don't understand is how the guy at the Dispensary has survived without apparently being glassed, clobbered or otherwise thoroughly worked over in such a way that he would have fled never to return. Must be that those cheery, friendly Scouse chappies think it is normal banter. Calm down, calm down a la Harry Enfield?

Dispensary is one of my favourite pubs. Not aware of any issues with the landlord personally, but sounds like a bit of a nutcase. Might try and wind him up next time!

I was disappointed that, with my 10 year old in tow, we got as far as the threshold and the barmaid just said "no!" I pointed out the last time we went in he'd been allowed. "Not when we're busy" came the reply. We had a quick half outside and then left. Roscoe Head just as good, as was The Ship and Mitre. The best for me was "Dead Crafty Beer Company" just across the road from the Ship and Mitre on Dale Street. 5 minutes' walk from Lime Street Station. Too many pubs to try, which is a nice problem to have...:-)

Disgusting! Sod em, there's too much choice for them to act like utter ***** and expect people to keep going in there. A bit like an award winning Ribble Valley pub I kicked into touch over a year ago for similar bizarre behaviour and dual standards.
