This weekend (in order)....

Post by Goddy » Sat Feb 02, 2019 9:40 am

1. Clarets (and Crouchy scoring last min winner)
2. England (rugby) - apols to tribesman, derryclaret and our other Irish chums).
3. Pats (Tom Brady - love him or hate him.... he's just fantastic)
4. England (cricket) - low/no expectations here I'm afraid
5. Bournemouth - still very sad for everyone connected with the Sala incident but strictly in footie terms could do with Cardiff losing).

Tottenham to beat Newcastle
Clarets to beat Saints
Ireland, sadly, to just edge England
Cardiff/ Bournemouth draw or Norwich win At Leeds. Haven’t picked which to record yet.
City to muller Arsenal tomorrow
Pats for the superbowl in a close one.

Which pleb decided to put the rugby on at 4.45. I know it's a different sport and they won't take football fans in to consideration but what a silly time!

Yes but it isnt quite the same is it. Means you have to switch all devices off  it's not a big thing but common sense must be short somewhere. Weren't most the games after 5pm in years gone by?

What on earth is 'wrong' with the timing of this match?

There are three of them this weekend, one last night and one this afternoon at 2.15 pm..are those times OK with you?

Football doesn't even vaguely consider its own millions of supporters when setting the times of matches, let alone the interests of other sports.

When you say..'Weren't most of the games after 5.00 pm in years gone by?'

No they definitely were not.

Ok HC - cool your jets.
I do think that in previous years a lot of rugby games were scheduled around 5.30 / 6pm on a Saturday.

There are a lot of people who like football and rugby and would like to get home and watch tonight’s game and 4.45pm seems a strange choice but hey ho they will just lose out on a few hundred thousand in viewing figures for the first half...no biggie - it’s only posh blokes chasing eggs after all !

He probably hasn't had his cornflakes yet to be fair. :)

It's just a strange time clashing with football Swansea at Bristol City and Cardiff being on at 5.30.

Edited for fat fingers syndrome.

It is annoying when the rugby clashes with the football. I always hope we are away when the rugby is on.

Burnley win

Would be a bonus if other teams around us lost but it’s in our hands so no need to rely on other results.

Some sort of complete turn around in Antigua would be nice but unlikely.

The Clarets to win , goodness it's what we all want .
The Irish to flog the English rip the whole soul out of the team and laugh at Eddie Jones . Not sorry to any of my English friends ( which there are many ) but when it comes to beating the English nothing is better .

Fair enough Tribesmen...you are entitled to your view...I have seen similar from many Welsh and Scottish people.

Can I press you though [no need to explain the Eddie Jones bit'..]

When you say 'flog the English rip the whole soul out of the team' and then ' but when it comes to beating the English nothing is better .'.

Why is that, why such strong feelings?

I understand your desire to win, and indeed I want England to win..but I don't think in those strong terms.

You have to be Irish to understand .

Ask any person which country they would want to beat at ANY SPORT , and England would would be top of any pole . Simple really . Now as for Eddie Jones he is a bitter little man for sure .

I did ask you WHY, that wasn't an answer [and I am 50% Irish].

I know the Eddie Jones stuff, I have heard it 100 times.

You say 'Simple really'..without explaining anything..!

SAY what you think man.

I'm also a bit head-scratching about just how vehement the anti-English thing can be. Watched an Ireland/England game with a few Irish chums some years back and was slightly freaked when one of the Irish women shouted at the telly "rip his f**kin' head off".....and I mean she'd have been on the pitch to give a demonstration of said head-ripping if she could.

I find it all strange as, quite frankly, most of the time I feel much closer to our Celtic cousins than most of the rest of England.... probably the bitter northerner thing in me (with the south (east) bias for investment and media attention - my perception anyhow).

Still, as tribesman says, I guess you'd have to be Irish to get it......

The poles from the Eastern part of Poland might reply "Ukraine" instead of "Germany" - albeit for fairly similar reasons.

The thing about the English rugby team isn't just about their being England. It's what they represent. Generally, if it's football, I don't care so much what happens to England. I mean, I don't think I'd want to put up with another 50+ years of 1966, just so as long as they don't win the thing, that's sort of ok. I'd rather they beat Argentina, USA and Spain, but lose to Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia. If they have a team made up of Clarets, Newcastle, Everton players, I'd rather they won more than if they have a side drafted from Man U, Liverpool.

If it's the Rugby Team, though, I want them to lose to Argentina, USA, North Korea, Iran, Hitler youth, anybody.

I'm guessing that as we (as Wales) were treated rather better in fairly recent years than Scotland and Ireland in that we weren't starved to death, shot, "cleared" out of our houses etc by the landed English gentry, that maybe our views are not as vitriolic.

Let's face it, Germany is still forever having to face up to what it did to the Jews, the Poles etc etc, but even though it wasn't that much longer ago, there is not a lot of recognition within England for the role played in Scotland or Ireland - or the slave trade for that matter.
