Ewanrob, I had a similar experience losing weight. The problem was I started to think I could eat as many chocolate biscuits as I wanted: getting back to life's small pleasures. But in the process I put on too much weight and am now slightly portly. So all the very best to you in your recovery but don't go too mad with the biscuits and tasty snacks!

I rang the bell 2 years ago after having radiotherapy for cancer on my vocal chord. Had another check-up this week and so far, so good.

My treatment left me unable to speak for 3 weeks - but when my voice came back I sounded like Sean Dyche

I have it in 3 areas cant be cured but forget it take whats coming and throw it over your shoulder the clarets will deliver

Hope your recovery goes well, ewanrob. As others have said, cancer can be beaten - I’ve beaten malignant melanoma twice and am now having chemo for a gynae cancer. None of it is fun treatment but if it gets us right, it’s worth it. Roll on next season - and enjoy putting that weight back on!

I am a great believer in Positive thinking and I have been very positive about all of my ailments with 2 or 3 of them being serious

I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer back in March 2011 and I had 3 Prostate biopsies which for me are horrendous

Last October I had my 4th Prostate Biopsy and this time it was a Transperenial Biopsy where instead of the usual 12/14 samples because it was under General anaesthetic they were able to take 47 samples
On November 1st 2018 I was given the brilliant news that all 47 samples were ALL clear of cancer
So yes Cancer can be beaten
Oh and on the next day 2nd November my Beautiful second Grandson Jace was born
And this year I am getting Married
So life for me is Brilliant

It’s a long time since I have posted in this forum but I saw your post and I wanted to offer my best wishes for what you are going through and the immediate path forward..

On Wednesday I attend my 6mthly consultant appointment as a 4.5 year survivor of Metastatic Squamous Cell Head & Neck Cancer with Occult Primary.

I was diagnosed in August 2014, after a thin needle biopsy on a lump on my neck; it turned out that it was a secondary and primary was an invisible one on base of my tongue (found with PET scan).

The Cisplatin Chemo is tough (no way of disguising that fact) and the Intensity Modulated Radio Therapy (IMRT) causes very sore throat ( I had a PEG stomach tube feeder to help) and there are other potential problems as you will have been briefed but…

More than anything, It’s important to tell your loved ones that you may look very ill BUT they need to keep in mind that it is the treatment, rather than the disease, that is causing this appearance and you WILL get better.

ADVICE: Lean on the support of your loved ones, they love you and you would do the same for them. It will be tough, but TOGETHER, you will get through it and better times are ahead.

My Support at my Cancer Centre was superb and the cancer team was incredibly supportive and no doubt you’ll get the same outstanding support off your team; use them, there is nothing they haven't seen before.

I can say that when attending clinic, you will probably see other folk in a far worse state than you, and strangely, if ever there is a time in life that you'll count your blessings, you will have cause to do so on almost every treatment attendance.

My advice: KEEP GOING and fight through the treatment sickness.
Your horizons will, at times, shrink back to what is happening to the here and now and just surviving for the present but the love and support of those around you will arm you with the spirit to see the treatment through (mine was six cycles of Cisplatin and 30 IMRT sessions).

Again, as you will have been briefed, there may be some legacy effects post treatment but you can come through very well, I and many others are evidence of it.
FYI I got back my swallowing action, taste, saliva, kept my teeth and although minus some Lymph nodes (due to a belt and braces neck section) I will achieve my 5 year point in September.

Despite all this, the past 5 years have been the best of my life, not in a material sense, but in sheer appreciation of life and the family love I’m so luck to have, I hope you will be blessed with the same.

I have a deep and personal hatred of this f*cking horrible disease, and I wish you all the best in beating it. Everybody that does gives strength and optimism to those following until, one day, the vast majority will. Stay strong and keep the faith. All the very best.

What a year!! Such fantastic news I am so very chuffed for you. I can't possibly understand how you have felt over the last 7 months or so.

My Father in law has just come through it. My close pal and fellow guitarist in our band has just got the all clear. He's the quiet silent type but my word he's vocal now. It just shows the worry he's been through.

My partner has just suffered a dissection (stroke) due to tear (lot of it about It seems) but she's doing amazingly well. Lifes tough at times but we'll crack on because its bloody amazing too.

Over the moon for you and all the very best to you and your family pal. UTC. Go well!

Fantastic news , puts a lot into perspective well done

Lost my sister 9 years ago and I've just had a malignant bowel tumour removed 4 weeks ago (a big bugger too!) Awaiting chemotherapy in coming weeks to hopefully lead to an all clear. Bit nervous about the therapy but my experience of the Staff at Carlisle has been nothing short of amazing. Glad to hear all these positive stories re the struggle against this blight. I believe we are very near to some major medical breakthroughs which could mean future generations will not have to experience this wasteful ,hateful disease.

Well in fella, brilliant news!

That's fantastic that you have finished and got through your treatment and your consultant results are free from cancer
This is not to sound negative but its 5 years before they can give a consultation of cancer free
I am at the moment waiting for my treatment on the chemotherapy ward and my blood results for the last couple of weeks haven't allowed me to go through with it.
I once again sit here to see after a second test,if I dont get my treatment in today it will be a month since my last these are the things your up against.
Platelets low calcium levels low infections that before all the side effects from chemo.
To get a picture how hard it is I was living in Spain and before all this happened to me my partner got diagnosed with stage 3 cancer of the breast we had to fly backwards and forward after her operation losing one of her breast and some of her lymph nodes removed
After that it was a case of 8 bouts of chemo then 2 months of everyday radiotherapy then herseptrin which is another form of chemotherapy after all that then its 10 years of tablets she got the all clear November 2018
A year into my treatment we was together for 8 years.
In May of this year I had to come back to the UK permanently because my cancer as progressed and have now got on a trial drug call certuximab or I think that's how you spell it
Anyway the point I am trying to make my partner who I was at the side of for all her treatment as now called it a day with our relationship as her family is out in Spain
My illness can't be cured just a case of keeping me going as long a poss
Plus side no one morning at me anymore I can now go to as many matches when it enables me to do I have got a season ticket for the first time again in almost 15 years
Down side Cancer's a bitch UTC

Sorry to hear what your going thru Longside4evr, I met a few people whilst in the Bexley Wing in Leeds who were having a similar experience as yourself. Yes Im aware of the 5 years, but right now for someone to say to me that I have responded brilliantly to the treatment and that I am 3 months further on than I probably should be with my recovery, is enough for me to feel elated. Stay strong mate, and I sincerely hope things begin to go your way with your treatment. UTC
