Southampton's fixtures
Gone under the radar a bit, for me, at least, but just looking at Southampton's run-in I'd say 'unpredictable' is how it looks.
They play Liverpool, Wolves, Bournemouth, and Hudds at home then Newcastle, Watford and West Ham away.
Quite frankly, they could win the majority fo those games or lose the majority of them. 'No sh*t, Sherlock' I hear you say but they'll do well to get much from the Liverpool game tonight, Wolves can be world-beaters on their day, Bournemouth is their local derby and Hudds (with the pressure off) could take something from that game. As for the away games, Newcastle seem solid at home, Watford pushing for Europe (with Wolves) and West Ham - well, who knows with them which West Ham will turn up...could be very few points there for Soton.
It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that Southampton might go down, particulalry if they need to win their last home game (against Hudds) for safety when the pressure's really on.

Re: Southampton's fixtures
Agreed.
Which is why I put a fiver on them to go down at 50/1 yesterday.
Fingers crossed.

I'd much prefer that run in - they'll be ok

Southampton aren't the team to worry about. If Cardiff end the season on more points than us then we're ******.

If Southampton get thumped tonight by Liverpool, I can see Bournemouth fans wanting us to beat them so we leave Southampton on the precipice... Perhaps Eddie may want to do us a favour...
Re: Southampton's fixtures
Brighton's fixtures aren't too dissimilar to our with regards to the league positions of their opponents.

Re: Southampton's fixtures
That's my point, IT, I hadn't even given Southampton a second thought until Bodge, on the 'Cardiff at Home' thread prompted me to check them out.
No one's been talking about the fact that Southampton could be relegated with everyone assuming they're a decent side and all set for safety. Whilst I'd probably prefer their run-in to ours it isn't inconceivable that they could still stuff it up (which I have to say would mildly amuse me if that happened).

Re: Southampton's fixtures
Southampton's remaining opponents average 11th position in the league. They'll absolutely stroll to safety.
Re: Southampton's fixtures
TBH at this time in the season you need a bit of luck but sheer hard work and desire to stay up, I think apart from luck we have the other two in abundance hence why Fulham capitulated.

Re: Southampton's fixtures
For reference, our opponents average 8th position and Cardiff's average 12th, Brighton's average 9th.
I'd say Brighton are the only team other than ourselves who are remotely likely to be caught by Cardiff.

Re: Southampton's fixtures
I get what you're saying but even after looking at their fixtures and ours if Cardiff finish above us it'll be close to unrealistic to think that we'll get enough points to finish above anyone else (except Brighton because Cardiff will have probably had to beat them too).Goddy wrote:That's my point, IT, I hadn't even given Southampton a second thought until Bodge, on the 'Cardiff at Home' thread prompted me to check them out.

Southampton can reasonably expect 5 or 6 points from just their remaining home games. We can only reasonably expect 3 or 4 from all of our remaining games. And since 3 of those expected points are from Cardiff if Cardiff finish above us then they'll have probably had to beat us.
Simply put, if Cardiff finish above us then we're not going to be above Southampton. If Southampton finish below us then Cardiff are almost certainly not finishing above us. So i don't think Southampton and their fixtures are of much relevance.

Indeed the average points scored per game of their remaining opponents is just 1.32 compared to our 1.57 and Cardiff's 1.54
Our run-in is the 3rd toughest in the league.

Re: Southampton's fixtures
Southampton will stay up no problem and I think they’ll get something from the Liverpool game tonight.
Southampton and Bournemouth aren’t really rivals either. Plenty of Bournemouth based Southampton fans.

Re: Southampton's fixtures
I have recently, but I also said that it is unlikely because I'd swap their run-in any day. They have the same points as us with a game in hand and if Liverpool beat them heavilly the goal difference would be negligible but we will be lucky to get a point from our last 4 games (possible but I wouldn't put any money on it). What would we give to have their run-in? Out of all the final games to have if it went to the wire we would immediately choose Huddersfield at home. West Ham? Anybodies guess as to how they turn up but Southampton could whallop a bad West Ham. Watford are okay but not that good. It's all a bit up in the air and as I saw the other day Southampton are definitely in the mix on paper but I do think with the games left they will survive pretty comfortably.Goddy wrote:That's my point, IT, I hadn't even given Southampton a second thought until Bodge, on the 'Cardiff at Home' thread prompted me to check them out.

Re: Southampton's fixtures
I'd love Southamptons run in to be honest.
They have also won three of their last four as well.
We want Brighton to beat Cardiff and they want us to beat Cardiff.
Suits both clubs that!

If we’re in the scrap then surely Southampton are. Both on 33 points.
Weird results happen this time of the year. Pointless looking at fixtures.

Your scenarios don't appear to consider that we could end up being above both Cardiff and Southampton.Imploding Turtle wrote:

I'm not vehemently disagreeing with you as I think Southampton will stay up and probably be above us. I was just pointing out that I don't think it's quite the foregone conclusion that they could get dragged down.
Jeez - who knows in this league (apart from MACCA who's jinxed 1-1 tomorrow for us at Bournemouth - see 'score prediction' thread)

Not sure that's relevant. Southampton have an above easy run-in, a relatively good goal difference and an extra game to play. They're not going down whether they previously lost to Cardiff or not.Spijed wrote:And Southampton lost twice to Cardiff.

Cardiff haven't got a sheep in hell's chance of staying up.
there are other teams who could very well finish between us and Cardiff.

Re: Southampton's fixtures
One problem we have is that Bournemouth have to go to Brighton and Soton.
They are utter dog babba away from home.

Quite right. Our rivals would've looked at Spurs and gone "zero points" and looked at Leicester as a game we could get 3, especially after 5 minutes. There are 4 teams who could fill that last relegation spot, Southampton being one of them.

After tonight the odds are that they will have played 32 matches and have 33 points - exactly the same as us.Rileybobs wrote:Not sure that's relevant. Aside from a better goal difference there's not much evidence to suggest they are more likely to get out of it than we are.

As already mentioned ... there's no real rivalry between Saints & Cherries fans. Saints v Pompey- yes- that's as fierce a rivalry as you get. I'd guess Cherries fans are reasonably happy to have such a short trip for an away match.
I agree that Saints are still in danger though; they rallied a fair bit under Hassenhutl but still have no real consistency (eg losing at home to Cardiff).
I think BHA are in a worse position than Saints though.

One match at a time. Let's beat Bournemouth.

I think you are missing the point of the OP mate. Nobody is disputing they are in the mix, it's just the fixtures and they have by far the easiest on paper.Spijed wrote:After tonight the odds are that they will have played 32 matches and have 33 points - exactly the same as us.

Minor help for us tonight - Ings can't play against his parent club.

Well yes, on the assumption it loses. But equally on the assumption it wins, winning £400 is better than winning £250.
