Barnes & Wood the new Jekyll & Hyde
Ash and Chris had the time of their lives on the South Coast yesterday and their link-up play was, rightly, commented on by the MOTD pundits but, WHY does it have to be one game in five that they play so well?
Whatever Sean gave them in their tea yesterday, he needs to keep giving it to them !

Naw, not biting.
Re: Barnes & Wood the new Jekyll & Hyde
Because the centre backs can either handle them as against Leicester, or they can't as yesterday. The thing is when it is obvious that the physical approach isn't working and they are not getting a sniff, make a change, but for some reason SD will not give Vidra any game time

Re: Barnes & Wood the new Jekyll & Hyde
This is very true. There are days when Barnes in particular is brilliant and wins everything, including his famous "free kicks"!! But there are others when it's clear after about 4 minutes that he's weeing against the breeze and will get absolutely nowhere. Those are the days where SD should really give plan B a try and at a much earlier stage, but doesn't.gtclaret wrote:Because the centre backs can either handle them as against Leicester, or they can't as yesterday. Re: Barnes & Wood the new Jekyll & Hyde
DIfference yesterday, we had control of the midfield so balls were going into the pair of them to either feet or chest. The games they are ineffective are when Tarks boots the ball 10 yards above them

Re: Barnes & Wood the new Jekyll & Hyde
In every game we have the opposition trying to prevent us imposing our game on them. So we have to nullify some of their game plan before we can get the upper hand. Then we have to combat any changes they might make during the game. Then we have to do all we can to stick to our game plan, winning individual battles, sometimes against more skilled individuals. This is where our ‘team strength’ comes into play, all the time trying to limit the chances they might create, keeping a solid defensive wall in place. Then we have to try to create, either by skill or by bossing their back line with our physicality. Then we have the small matter of converting the chances that come our way. Not all players can do that. Thankfully we have two front men who can hold their own in this division, a young up and coming star in the making and others who will chip in with maybe a dozen or so, hopefully more over a season. It isn’t as easy as many of you seem to think it is.

I wouldn't have said his first four minutes yesterday were all that good!Dark Cloud wrote:This is very true. Re: Barnes & Wood the new Jekyll & Hyde
Any other front 2 in the PL who scored 20+ goals between them would get a lot more respect than our two.
Perhaps if Burnley win the midfield battle as Saturday they are given the licence to perform to their maximum.

Re: Barnes & Wood the new Jekyll & Hyde
1. In most games we dont have much of the ball for one.
2. In others big defenders like Leicesters are able to combat them.
If 1 and 2 are added up then they might not particularaly show up. Its not just them its other parts of the team that have to function in different ways against different teams to allow them to show up. But against most teams, when we do get the ball forward they are a handfull and dangerous.

Much more playing of the ball down the wide channels Sat instead of just the normal hoof up the middle.
They can both have their off days (when Vydra could be used more), but Sat also showed quality of service from the rest of the team is important to them.
Even if there is no plan B, we can mix up plan A from time to time as Sat showed

What makes their scoring record even more convincing for me is the lack of penalties to
Some strikers goals half or a third are made up from the spot
Our strikers earn every last strike into that onion bag

Re: Barnes & Wood the new Jekyll & Hyde
Completely agree with this. They are very inconsistent but as stated that is down to the opposition, if they have defenders who don't mind mixing it then Barnes and Wood are generally very poor and the change, when needed, doesn't come. If the the opposition defence is open to being 'bullied' then we have two great strikers. I am beginning to think that any 'failure' with Barnes and Wood is down to just bad substitutions by Dyche, which is generally agreed on here as not one of his managerial strong points. We definitely need that fast, tricky forward who doesn't need physicality to beat defenders and we may well have him in Vydra but Dyche just doesn't seem to want to play him. Life's full of mysteries.gtclaret wrote:Because the centre backs can either handle them as against Leicester, or they can't as yesterday. Re: Barnes & Wood the new Jekyll & Hyde
That is just a small issue, a bigger factor is the delivery of the ball. When all we do is knock it long, they will have good days and bad. When we get the balls into the corners, as McNeil did all afternoon, and pull the ball back, they will make hay.gtclaret wrote:Because the centre backs can either handle them as against Leicester, or they can't as yesterday. We mixed it up all afternoon, and as we've shown already this season, when we do that we succeed. It's no coincidence that against Palace and Newcastle we just didn't play football on the deck, and suffered the consequences.
