Playing youngsters in th first team?
Just discussing the Bolton scenario with friends and I remember reading a few times about Burnley being in a bit of a purple patch and sending out a team of youngsters (mainly youngsters?) who then went on to win a few games in a row.
It was before my time so can’t remember the exact story but wondering if anybody could enlighten me on it a little more please?

Aye, that was the '68/'69 season. Harry Potts was not best pleased after we'd lost 0-4 at home to Liverpool.
He then brought in several young players into the team who then went on to win 8 games on the bounce, 6 in the League and 2 in the League Cup. The players included the likes of Dobson, Murray, Blant, Collins, KIndon & Smith.

Couple of snippets probably worth adding to that. In the middle of that run we thrashed Don Revie's Leeds 5-1 and I think it was one of only two defeats for them in the whole of the '68/'69 season.
From that run we went almost 51 years until the last few weeks when we won three consecutive games in the top flight by two goals or more.

No, not at all.cricketfieldclarets wrote:We were **** for 49 of them!
We've had some very good sides during that 51 years, particularly the '73/'74 side and also the '09/'10 & '14/'15 sides were decent enough.

Ok, '69/'70, '74/'75, '14/'15, '16/'17, '17/'18, that's five more plus the '68/'69 season and the current one.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Thats 3. Makes it 48 - i wasnt far out

I wasn't being entirely serious.Royboyclaret wrote:Ok, '69/'70, '74/'75, '14/'15, '16/'17, '17/'18, that's five more plus the '68/'69 season and the current one.
FWIW In my lifetime the best seasons ive seen are:
1992
1994
2000
2001
2002
2009 (we actually weren't great at times - I think we were better under Stan in our first two seasons back at that level)
2014
2016
2018
and the back end of this season.
Last year was great. And 1992 my favourite. But if I had to pick one for style and results it would be 2014. We were incredible at times. Forest, Derby and wigan in particular.

Aye, '13/'14 was a bit special with Tripps, Danny Ings and the gang.

Re: Playing youngsters in th first team?
1961/62 remains my favourite season when we were smashing every team in sight.
That said, I'd loved to have seen the 1920/21 season when we went 30 games unbeaten. That must have been one hell of a side with Halley, Boyle & Watson and the rest.

Didn’t John Murray in that 68/69 season beat some record about scoring in successive games?

Ings and Vokes was a great combo. Marney unexpectedly brilliant. Absolutely dominant and another great pairing with Jones.Royboyclaret wrote:Aye, '13/'14 was a bit special with Tripps, Danny Ings and the gang.
That said, overtaking BHA and Boro was great too.
TBF we have been blessed ever since Orient!

Re: Playing youngsters in th first team?
By chance really. We'd been hammered by Liverpool and had to play West Ham three days later with a number of players injured meaning we had to make a lot of changes. Lochhead, Coates and Collins were all ruled out while Thomson, who had made his debut in the Liverpool game, was dropped.bfccrazy wrote:Just discussing the Bolton scenario with friends and I remember reading a few times about Burnley being in a bit of a purple patch and sending out a team of youngsters (mainly youngsters?) who then went on to win a few games in a row.

We beat West Ham and there was one change for the next match with Coates coming back in. Other than that, it was the same team for the next set of games with eight won on the bounce including two League Cup ties. It ended with a 1-1 home draw against Wolves.

Well, John scored 8 goals in those 8 games including the first 6 games on the bounce.South West Claret. wrote:Didn’t John Murray in that 68/69 season beat some record about scoring in successive games?
Only the Ipswich home game he failed to score which was the 7th in that sequence.
Probably only Willie Irvine or Tommy Lawton might rival that?

Re: Playing youngsters in th first team?
Three years earlier, Willie Irvine scored in seven successive league games, netting a total of ten goals. He did fail to score in a League Cup game in the middle of that run but I believe that remains a club record. The club tried to claim that Charlie Austin had equalled that record in 2012 but he actually missed a game during the run at Leicester but then scored in each of the next six.South West Claret. wrote:Didn’t John Murray in that 68/69 season beat some record about scoring in successive games?

Re: Playing youngsters in th first team?
It seems Tommy Lawton scored in each of his first six internationals for England, although he had left Burnley for Everton by that time.
Will that record still stand?
