Best to go round with a couple of cans and sort it out, explain to him you can't say that these days. Educate him a little.

Be the better man.

It's not racism so much, more xenophobic patriotic nonsense.

Don't worry about it.

i lived in Ayrshire for 7 years Steve.

The jocks are spoon fed on that stuff, and the likes of Salmond and Sturgeon have preached thinly disguised racist envy and bile for decades. They clean their act up for the main bbc news stuff...but locally they stoop to the lowest politics of hate imaginable.

..I put up with it for years. My only real surprise was that it tended to come mostly from supposedly educated or professional types. Whilst working in the real deprived poverty-ridden areas like Easterhouse, Drumchapel and the Gorbals ,I encountered very little anti-Englsh bile.
Plenty of violence was on offer...obviously..but it was centred on my presence, not my nationality...and I dealt with it as such!

It is racism same as any other.

I live in Scotland and have done since 2003. I have encountered a little bit of that back in the early days of being here but to give a bit of context, what I have learned from my experience is that generally the Scottish culture is very welcoming but high degrees of savage bants! I have developed a thick skin and give back as much as I take.

Echoing what someone else said above, my wife used to work in an accountants and one of her bosses was openly anti English and regularly used to say stuff like "I'm not homophobic but I am rascist!" as though that was a badge of honour?

There are dicks everywhere though but the vast majority of people that I come in contact with (and I run a business where I come into contact with hundreds of people every week) are fantastically balanced lovely people. Loads of integrated English folk round here and surprisinglty large numbers from East Lancs.

I take it your good lady's Scottish, from your previous comment .. she might wish to have a quiet word with your neighbour's partner ( if applicable ) and explain what happened, that should ruin his day when she starts pecking his head ..

Revenge is a dish best served cold, and all that ...

most folk with common sense can distinguish the difference in people wherever they come from and accept it.
scots and english alike are so closely linked. mostly we have endured the same things, poverty, hardship and are usually content to get on with life as best we can.
there will unfortunately be a few thick as pig **** numbskulls who resort to nasty and incredibly foolish comments based on some ridiculous notion of nationalism and sense of identity. ordinarily their ranting is just regarded as pointless prattle, but because of the recent hysteria with high profile divisive politicians, it can easily turn ugly, and gain support from greater numbers.

Reading the above and taking it further - The England North/South divide, Lancashire/Yorkshire, Burnley/Blackburn - you could go on and on - so where does racism begin and end.........is the Englishman/Irishman/Scotsman joke still alive or is THAT racism? How far do we take all this? It will soon be "dangerous" to go outside in case you say something that upsets someone. It's a really sad in my opinion.

Hey Steve, unless you have shrunk considerably since I knew you I'm guessing you were bigger than him. In which case a bit of violence might have 'educated' him. If you can't hit a Scotsman who can you hit.

We're nearly there mate. Things that you can't say anymore:

Love - sexual harassment.
Fat - fatist.
4 eyes - opticalist.
Ginger - rhymes with minger and thus is associated with ulgyist.
Lardarse - see fat.
Gay - if said to anyone happy who isn't actually gay (a hijacked word).
Cow - if said to a female that isn't actually a member of the cattle family.
Titch - if aimed at a person (usually male) who is vertically challenged (smallist?).
Slaphead - considered now an insult to the follically challenged (no longer a term of endearment - see Oasis).

Honestly mate I don't care any more. The politically correct are here to stay and are determined that all references to gender, race, religion etc. should be outlawed and that we should soon be all wearing the same clothes so there can be no differentiation of the sexes when walking the streets. Maybe we should all wear veils to cover whatever facial features we have then there can be no name-calling with regard to colour or looks of any kind.

I've stopped trying to please anyone now and if someone says to me 'you can't say that' my reply is simply 'I just did'.

I get abuse for being a "dingle " in Preston.

There are simpleton's everywhere.

You now know he is true colours . Move on and just accept that all Scots are jealous of the English.

Just like all Knobenders are highly envious of Burnley

Just to add I have holidayed in Scotland an many occasions and always found them a friendly sort. However I know a couple of people who live there and are seeing/experiencing exactly what the O.P. has.

I've been called white boy , white ass and all the other usual names but with expletivs, but i just shrug it off.
People will say I shouldn't, but honestly I do not find it offensive and it diesnt bother me.

I dont see it as a derogatory comment or put down, and it effects me as much as someone calling me a fat b4stard, thick (unt or whatever else. Shrugged off and not sn ounce of hurt, offence or time wasted even thinking about it.

Maybe that'll change in time, but for over a decade it hasn't.

I used to spend a lot of time there years ago due to my then partner being Scottish and I found them great. I just remember in a village pub once this old women who was about 120 sitting there drunk and calling me a Sasanach b*st*rd. Priceless.

Talked at length to my brother about all this, we are of a similar opinion. We respect other peoples views/ways and the law, but all that is going on now is just too much...........we have always had jokes about all these things but mean no harm, likewise when the joke is "against" us. If you find it offensive you can say so immediately, not go onto some media thing and cause it to become all out of proportion.

It's like many things these days bud, it has become fashionable to take offence. The old saying 'sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me' has never been further from people's minds than now. If you find a TV programme offensive switch it off. If you find a comedian offensive walk out. If someone says something that offends you explain to them why and give them a chance to respond. I've never had a problem with Jo Brand making a living telling jokes about men - she's funny. I've never had a problem with the likes of Eddie Murphy or Will Smith making fun of white guys - they are hilarious. I even tolerate young people making cracks about my age - they don't mean any harm. Mass media has spent the last few years telling people how to be offended and unfortunately, like sheep, many follow.

The gutless will always finds a way of trying to make people feel guilty. I don't think I have ever been 'offended' in my life.

I admit that there is a marked difference between being offended and, for example, racist intolerance and behavior, which cannot be acceptable and must not be. Anything that incites violence and hatred (racial/religious/sexual) is obviously to be abhorred, but too many people take offence at the slightest thing.

When times get bad I think to myself, well I know how to take drugs and stay in bed on a terrace street in Burnley, if the worst comes to the worse and I don't make it as the world's greatest artist... :-)

I just need some slut to join me in the activity...

I've worked quite a lot in Scotland and I always find that a simple mention of the 1966 world cup final engenders some pleasant and friendly discussion.
