I messaged him about a month ago when I first heard. He’s been through a terrible ordeal and let’s hope he’s on the road to a full recovery.

I’ve had my disagreements with him over the years but they pale into total insignificance when you see what he’s going through.

I would never pretend to say I got on with the guy but as Tony puts forward, it's not nice being ill. Been there, seen it, done it. So hope he comes through it to support Burnley.

Today is day 108 of my stay and it’s fair to say i’ve been through the mill. Truth be told though, it’s a miracle that I’m alive so any day above the ground is a good one as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve a way to go yet but I’m hoping to be out before Christmas. I can’t wait to get back on the Turf and I can only repeat my thanks for your kind words. I’ve had some low, low points and tough days mentally and the support from people really does make a difference.

Kev, I've only just seen this. I had no idea that you've not been well. Goodness me you've definitely sound to have been through the mill, that's a hell of a long time in Hospital. I hope whatever it is/was that you make a full recovery and you get back to some normality sooner rather than later. It's weird I thought about you only a couple of weeks ago as I said to my wife I'd lost contact with you (since the Cotterill days). Get well soon fella and back on the Turf as soon as possible. Always enjoy Socrates' posts. Don't always agree with them but that doesn't matter. Hope your recovery continues and you are back doing the things in life you like doing. Often wondered which sport is your favourite due to the incredible knowledge you have of boxing. Get well soon.

For those wondering what happened..... well, I hadn’t been well for a while and had been to see my doctor a few times and was on antibiotics. One morning I was lying in bed when I heard and felt a pop in my stomach. I jumped out of bed like a scalded cat and was lying on the floor in more pain than i’d ever felt in my life.

I didn’t know what was wrong with me but knew it was bad - I could feel fluid gushing around my stomach. I was taken to Blackburn in an ambulance and passed out just as I arrived at the hospital. The next thing I recall clearly is waking up 34 days later not knowing what the hell had gone on.

I was apparently rushed into surgery where they discovered that my intestines had split - so all the bad stuff that stays in there was flooding my stomach and infecting my organs. I was in surgery for six hours where they were basically trying to keep me alive, but they had to stop when my body couldn’t stand it anymore and I had a heart attack.

I was transferred to ICU and placed on a ventilator and dialysis whilst they waited to see if I survived. After two days the sepsis has reached such a level that it would kill me, so even though more surgery would probably kill me too they had to go back in. I had five lots of surgery in less than a week and my significant others were told twice to prepare for the worst...... but somehow I survived.

The surgeons, nurses and staff here worked a miracle and I owe them everything. I have restricted movement of my legs and right arm but I’m getting slowly better with physio. What is very clear to me is that I am incredibly, incredibly lucky to be here and I feel blessed to have this second chance.

I first knew of it a month ago when I saw a short video which I think was your first attempt at walking. I’d no idea at the time what had happened although I have picked up some info since.

What you’ve just told us is worse than I imagined.

There are times when this message board is not so good but I know from personal experience just how supportive people can be on here.

Impossible to comprehend how your family have coped with all that, never mind you. None of us know when our time is up, but there is a reason you have come through this. One day you will learn that reason.

Hi Socrates, do they know what caused your intestine to split?

I had similar pain in Dec 2014, but mine was caused by a blood clot. They had to remove two feet of my intestine (three ops in four days) and like you I was in a coma, only for two & half weeks though!

What's all the fuss about?

Guy gets stomach ache...gets a free lift to Blackburn (they couldn't charge, could they!), gets put up for a 108 days and counting, has lots of family visits, complete rest for a huge time and then loads of folk wish him well. Take the pie out of the box, next time!


Seriously, I am not sure how you made it through, Socrates, so extremely pleased you did. Incredible inner strength to overcome such a body poisoning. One tough Claret.
