England had the highest levels of excess deaths in Europe between the end of February to the middle of June, official analysis shows.

No doubt the usual cheerleaders will be along to dismiss this with their usual half-baked 'truth'.
The really disgusting thing about these devastating figures is that we had some time to prepare that we wasted. Foreign travel should have been stopped, strict isolation, cancelling concerts and football etc should have been implemented. If there ever is a really independent enquiry the government cannot deny they wanted herd immunity and Cummings alleged quote that sacrificing a few thousand pensioners is a small price to pay for protecting the economy should see him and his puppet Johnson facing criminal charges.

The vaccine will win regulatory approval from authorities in Russia

What they really mean is that Putin will give it his 'regulatory approval'.

I agree. Bollockbrained herd immunity, without any understanding whatsoever of this particular coronavirus. Also throwing care homes under a bus is akin to 'useless eaters' ideology. And like you say, we were forewarned, but not forearmed. No excuse for lack of PPE and a whole host of other 'inactions'. Today the govt is saying that people who test positive for coronavirus or show symptoms must self-isolate for at least 10 days, rather than seven. The WHO said this months ago. This govt doesn't lead, it's led and while being dragged screaming.

But not to worry. Everything will be alright when we have our world beating Track and Trace system up and running.

For one thing, there is no evidence that he ever said that. Even the allegation says it's a paraphrase.

But for another, whether you like it or not, it's a valid viewpoint. Tactlessly put, and one that you can certainly disagree with, but valid. There is no sense in the government having a policy that no-one is going to die. More pertinently, there is no sense in the government having a policy that all else will be sacrificed to minimise coronavirus deaths. Even if all they are concerned about was deaths and not life in general, action taken to save coronavirus deaths is certain to increase deaths from other causes to some extent. It's a balance.

It has been calculated that over 100,000 people died because of the "austerity" policies of David Cameron. I doubt that figure, myself, but it's been put forward seriously. Suppose that the damage to the economy that we have suffered, has caused 100,000 deaths that Cummings' suggestion would have saved? Suppose that 100,000 people died as a result of action taken to save a few thousand pensioners? Is it so obvious that that is the right course of action, that anyone saying "No - save the 100,000" is an evil man? Or at least a criminal?

I think GB have overstated deaths compared to other European countries, in most EU countries it is Covid if that is what kills you not if you have for example terminal cancer and were going to die anyway and Covid was a complication as per say excess fluid can be in some cancers, it goes down as cancer on the death certificate not build up of fluid.

That chart is for the week commencing 23rd May, and by that week France's outbreak was more or less over. Or at least, wasn't killing anyone. the reporter appears to think that the chart shows deaths up to and including 23rd May, which is pretty sloppy work.

There is some garbage peddled on here.

PPE was ordered, but for example the French gov stopped the export of it.
They then ordered from other places but it turned out that it wasn't up to standard, now that isn't the Govs fault.
PPE wasn't in short supply across the country, just certain areas but it wasn't reported like that because that isn't very dramatic.

Care homes are mainly private businesses, therefore they're expected to take their own precautions etc.
They weren't tossed under any bus, but you could make a good case that their owners failed in their duty of care.

Yes the gov has made mistakes by initially bringing people here who'd been potentially infected, by failing to shut the borders and by insisting on bringing every brit abroad on holiday home when really they should've left them out there and paid for their accommodation /food etc.
I personally think that international travel should still be stopped for things like holidays.

They did however get some things right and for an unknown virus there was always going to be problems regardless.

Herd immunity was a good idea in principle, if the virus had behaved like other ones, but it was still an unknown quantity at the time.
The Dominic Cummings comment has never been proven but its taken as fact by his detractors for obvious reasons.

We now know that it's more of an issue for obese, elderly, and other certain people with illnesses, but not so much the kids.
UK scientists are apparently closer to a vaccine than anyone else but it will take time and that's one reason why Herd immunity was considered a viable option initially.

As for WHO, they've been poor from the very start of the virus appearing to now.

It took them a long long time to declare it a pandemic when as Stan would say "a blind man of a galloping horse could see" what was coming
I seem to recall them banging on about test test test but not so much of social distancing which is first and foremost in keeping case numbers low

Logged in to like. So refreshing to read a balanced opinion rather than the usual anti-Tory/Johnson/Cummings hyperbole.

As far as I can see, there’s been zero useful leadership or information from WHO. Trump, for all his faults, got it right about them. We should stop paying in too.

Just seen the data on Newsnight from Leicester. Despite quite a massive increase in people testing positive and the theory that a risk is the number of multigenerational households there has been no blip in hospital admissions with Covid or increase in deaths from Covid but just a steady decline.
No bright ideas to explain it and the large numbers of positive tests cannot just be due to massive increase in testing, or can it?
