To put Jeff in the same bracket as Jonah is mind boggling

Jeff can actually use both feet :D

We wouldn't even be talking about the pass if vydra hadn't miscontrolled it twice before his wayward shot somehow hit the back of the net :D :D :D

Being in the right place to intercept and/or win possession back is one of JH's biggest assets, just as he did a few moments before supplying that beautifully weighted through ball for Matej. It's not the first time that he and MV have combined to produce a brilliant (and crucial) goal (e.g. away at BHA).

Unfortunately his final ball can be frustratingly variable in quality, to the point where his detractors can't wait for the next mistake and another excuse to barrack him.

People have commented here that the abuse he gets from some could be a factor in him not signing a new contract (yet). But it's also been noted that his agent feels he can get a better deal elsewhere. Negativity from fans has probably rung in his ears at times, but in today's football world money often speaks loudest. Maybe it's a combination of the two in JH's case.

Buxton is spot on with his comment that in the last few games he's more than proved his worth. And whilst that might be due simply to hitting a good patch of form/playing in a position that brings out his best, his contract situation might also be playing a major part in this. On the one hand it could strengthen his negotiating position with Burnley (if he has any interest in staying) or, alternatively, he may be aware that other clubs are now watching his performances closely.
Hendrick and his agent have probably been speaking to other clubs the last few months. He'll know exactly what sort of money he'll be looking at elsewhere.

Jeffs biggest problem is that he's never been able to stamp his authority on one position.
He has had to play in various positions with sometimes less than adequate performances.
One thing you do get with him is100% he doesn't shy away from tackles and does his share of defending.
Does he deserve the pelters he gets from fans who don't like him? No because he'll play anywhere he's asked to,whether he is comfortable with it or not.
When our backs against the wall i'd rather Hendrick be on the pitch as to JBG, Lennon or Bradey.
Yeah he's not our most gifted player but he always puts a shift in,and to replace him with someone with the same work ethic but more skill would cost silly money.

We should not even be comparing his contribution to those of JBG , Brady and Lennon

JBG or sicknote could get injured on Question Of Sport if he was invited-you just cannot rely on him being available or lasting 90 minutes-be interesting to see how much he has played this season. Brady I am afraid is history-I no longer think of him being part of the squad-when we signed him I got really excited as to what he could give the team, and we saw glimpses of it in the early games. He certainly has not earned his wages for us, unlike so many of the first team. Lennon is a workhorse but has no end product

For me right now, Jeff is more of an integral part of the team than 12 months ago. Totally reliable-when was he last injured or limped off ??

No but they are the players that Hendrick typically gets subbed for.

JBG a better player statistically . I would gladly swap his injuries with Jeff.

Hendrick to Celtic

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Mon Mar 02, 2020 11:09 pm

He is soon to be announced as signing a deal with Celtic.

Massive miss for me. Much maligned and vastly underrated. Particularly given the job he does in any position asked.

Will be a tough job to replace. Especially given we won’t get anything for him. Imagine Brownhill may be given a similar role. But was hoping that Hendrick and Brownhill would feature more together and we could look to bring in a true winger on that side next year.

Some big decisions and signings due in summer. Especially down the right.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Brady join him. But would be less of a miss especially if we got some money for him.

I thought Hendrick’s agent had told him he could get more money elsewhere. That’s unlikely to be Celtic.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that, Celtic & rangers would be able to match if not better some PL offers.

According to what’s on the internet Celtic’s highest paid player last season was Scott Sinclair on 35k per week which (again according to the internet) is what Hendrick is on now. Given we’re known for our generous bonus structure I suspect Hendrick is earning more than the top Celtic player already.

Maybe the prospect of League Champion's medals and regular Champions League (and Europa League) football has interested him. Assuming he doesn't absolutely squander his dosh he is already set for life - maybe the prospect of ONLY earning £1.5 Million per annum isn't enough to put him off!

Gudmonnson a better player. Jeff a constant threat of losing possession. Jeff is hard working and can play different roles.

Upgrade required anyway if we are to continue progressing and push for the title next season.

Gudmunnson is no use if he's permanently injured though. As you say though it's certainly a position we should be looking at this summer, unless the plan is for Brownhill to play there.

As most Irish footballers dream of playing for Celtic there could well be truth in it.
As he gets no respect from so many of our blinkered support I can understand him wanting to go anywhere.

I saw him misplace 4 passes in three mins on saturday so will not be missed but would have been a good squad filler.

He's done alright recently, but was poor on Saturday.

As is often the case when we're expected to win the game and impose ourselves a bit more. You get credit for keeping it tight against the big boys, but more is expected against bottom half teams.

Disappointing, if true. Would’ve liked him to stay, but also disappointed if we didn’t improve our right side in the summer.

Certainly would have given us more strength in depth next season.

Will play in the CL and in front of 55k every week, plus a big chunky signing on fee, so can see it being true.

Celtic are reliant on the CL for their finances. If Rangers got their act together a bit more then Celtic would really struggle to pay any decent wages if they finished second for a season or two.

It basically is all or nothing in the Scottish Prem.

Celtic won't be able to compete with us for wages I wouldn't have thought. But playing for Celtic always seems appealing for the Irish lads. Chance to play in the Champions league every year, guaranteed silverware. He's more likely to get to play in centre midfield up there as well.

I think Scotland might be getting two champions league places with the old firms performances in Europe this year. Their co-efficience or whatever it's called has shot up.

Have always tried to look on the positive side with Hendrick but his performance in the first half on Sat was pretty woeful
Continually gets caught on the ball and passing range leaves something to be desired - apart from the Vydra goal ;)
Having said that, Dyche always picks him - just shows how much we need to find a new spark of pace/skill out on the right hand side this summer
Wouldn't mind if he and Lennon moved on this summer.
We will prob exercise the extra year option on Brady but then look to sell him so we can get some money back

We never look weaker with Hendrick in the side and you certainly can't afford to carry players in the Prem.

He gives us so much solidity.

My observations of Hendrick on Saturday are that he lost the ball a fair bit in the first 20 minutes or so when we appeared to be playing well, it looked like he couldn't think quick enough to decide what to do with it - his brain was 2 steps behind his feet. Where he excels for us is winning the 2nd ball and challenging to win the ball back and so many times on Saturday he won the ball and managed to short pass to Westwood or Cork to allow them to build play.

He appears to play well when we as a team are not, and seems to struggle when we play better football.

Simple solution he is not good enough for this level and certainly not out wide or as a number 10 - when he plays its like we are playing with 2 right backs - need better in the summer and have JBG as back up.

Personally I most often don't have a problem with him, but I always feel when he does have a really good game, he's playing out of his skin and it's usually against the weaker sides and for every good game he has, he has 3 or 4 meh to poor ones. He strikes me as a very good Championship player who needs that fraction of a second too long to think and execute, which is usually denied you in the PL. (So Celtic would be fine, except in the Champions league) I genuinely believe he gives 100% and I also believe that at some point he became aware that he wasn't very popular with large sections of the crowd and that has affected his confidence at times and also his future plans. The problem we have is if he goes and Brownhill steps up fine, but we still then need another signing as back up and even half decent midfield/utility players who are up to the standard don't come cheap. Bearing in mind that Lennon is past it, JBG has a thing about playing doctors and nurses and Brady never had it (so he ain't going to suddenly find it now!)

Hendrick has done a good job on the right and it’s going to take a big fee to replace him, I guess brownhill is that replacement so he should be at least getting half a game of all the ones left this season as it’s big jump up from championship level.

Much like Arfield, he’ll be sorely missed when he does move on.

I liked Arfield but to say "sorely missed" is a bit of an exaggeration: if Hendrick goes it will be a shame, but we have Brownhill and I would hope we could bring in someone to replace Hendrick anyway.
