BAKED bean lovers are getting ripped off by some supermarket own brands which fill more than half the tin with sauce.

Cans of baked beans from Tesco, Asda and Lidl contain fewer than 50 per cent beans, a Sun Money investigation found.

The instant coffee is absolute pants to be fair. As is the knock off Mars bars.

Specific things I like from aldi:

Frozen basa fillets especially salt and pepper
Most of the beers and ales are good
The jelly beans
Mulitpack crisps (like sun bites)
Pizzas, frozen and fresh
Garlic pizza bread
The extra special filled pasta (mushroom and truffle)

Probably a lot more but those are what jump out at me.

Like I said upthread, I call into Aldi or Lidl (Tod or Accy one, not Colne Rd) for bits and bobs like cooked meats, cheeses, beers and wine.

A couple of things I won't buy from the discounters, or indeed the leading supermarket own brand label, are their baked beans or cornflakes. It has to be Heinz or Kellogg's.

Also, I think my kids would divorce me if I went home with supermarket own brand coke. Mind you, it might be worth it for some peace and quiet. Only joking.

Tesco Rawtenstall was changed to Jack's,its now a Tesco again it failed abysmallly

I might be wrong, but I think that Jack's is struggling to compete against the German discounters. The one in Rawtenstall, where the old Asda used to be, has reverted back to a Tesco.

We had one in Rawtenstall for a few months - they closed it and turned it back into a Tesco store . I never went in to be honest.

very similar but both have their individual gems which are better than the mainstream supermarkets but much cheaper. Their strength is buying power....both buy huge numbers of one item instead of giving a wider variety of makes. Both work their staff hard on the tills and stocking shelfs....it all adds up to cheaper prices even though quality can be and usually is very good.

When I think about it we use them all plus Morrisons in Bacup and Todmorden basically because we get bored just shopping in one place . Shame about Tesco in Rawtenstall I pass it on my way over to work in Bolton but it just isn't the same since the Jacks episode ..the only one I don't shop at is Asda because the Rawtenstall one is a pain with the car parking unless you go at a really quiet time.

Now the way i see it i like certain brands so happy to pay for it simple really .
I recall one lad who used to bring in food to work , now he used to eat something like Frosties and told me there was no differance between the ones he had and the real thing .
Now these babies he eat were white just sugar really , now don't eat them myself but goodness the lad is around 20 stone must eat Frostoes ( whatever name they are called in Lidi ) day and night if you ask me .

Then drive a couple of minutes round the corner to Aldi for your German discounter stuff and after that you can walk across the carpark and call into the M&S foodhall for your M&S treats.

It was spot on mate no to busy not to quiet and stocked everything you needed was ticking over nicely till they changed it to a Jack's,some days the only cars on the car park belonged to the staff when it was Jacks

Someone already said it on here that Jacks screamed of 'buy cheap, buy crap'. Whereas Aldi and Lidl say, at least to me, 'buy good at a cheaper price'. I wonder who Tesco paid for their Jacks marketing? Their adverts reminded me of the crappy Netto's from my student days.

I find all the snackrite crisps to be poor, the monster claws are Aldi I think, compared to walkers & Seabrook & even supermarket own brand taste better, some items even if cheaper I steer well away from, dairyfine is hit & miss with the chocolate also.

I went veggie for the first few months of the year as a challenge.

The veggie/vegan options at Aldi were excellent. I had the beetroot burger last night for my tea.


Aldi is decent. Fruit and veg does go off quicker IMO but apart from that there is some excellent buys. Also a good stock of decent cheap IPA beers

I sold own brand razors to Asda, Tesco, Boots, Superdrug, Coop, Sainsbury, Tesco, Morrison,Spar and Aldi for many. amny years.

Same razors to everyone but in their own brand livery.

Aldi was the best by far followed by Morrisons.. Very efficent company.

They are cheaper because they take less margin, use a minimum product spread and use bigger more rubust outers which can make a hugh difference to costs.

Aldi and Lidl both made the same mistake when they came to the UK by introducing themselves as "discounters" .

In their own country their car parks are full of top of the range Aldi,s, Mercedes and BMW's. They are not seen as discounters but the best place to shop.

The best thing Aldi and Lidl did was their marketing and convincing the middle classes that it's a cool place to shop. I remember a couple of years ago they had an advert that was basically set in a village fete, it's not really that subtle but very effective.

I haven’t been in Aldi for a couple of years as there isn’t one nearby and don’t need to own a car.

There was a program on about them a few months back. The struggled at times due to the layout of the stores. British like a supermarket to be designed and in a certain “pretty” way. Stacks of cereals etc wasn’t something we were used too.

In Germany they’re brilliant. In Berlin their pastry section was unbelievable. Those Germans make marvellous pastries

Yes, their image has changed and it was indeed a mistake to market themselves as bargain basement . The last recession changed all that when they got a whole new audience who quickly found out what they had been missing out on. Some said it would be a short lived thing, but this didn't happened and Aldi/Lidl expanded into more affluent part of the country.

I remember when Aldi/Lidl first started to appear (in the UK) back in the mid 1990s. Their advertising campaigns were akin to 'buy baked beans for 10p a can'. Nowadays it's 'look at the price of our lovely Bresaola and Parma hams'.

Well today was the day I was fearing most, Mrs Macca went for " a few bits" and decided to pick these up "to give them a try"

She has offset them with 2 varieties of share bag hand cut crisps so hopefully theyll be good or at least used to dry the mouth, mask the taste and force me to drink them quicker.

Can't wait for the chance to repay her when she sends me the shop especially for galaxy chocolate, a specific wine or pick her up a certain deodorant, I'll come back with dark chocolate, Lambrini and a cheap bar of soap stating its half the price, may aswell give it a go.

I've yet to find decent dry ciders in Aldi/Lidl. You'll find decent IPAs and 'craft' beers, but not dry cider, unless it's tramp juice strength.

In the main supermarkets I tend to go for Henney's or Aspall's that are around 5.5%. I'd love a good dry 'session' cider under 5.0%, but I've struggled to find one.

I went in Home Bargains for something a few weeks back, possibly logs and kindling for the stove and found they had a shelf of various Sadlers brewery ales for £1 a 500ml bottle. This included a stonking Mud City Stout at 6%, Hop Bomb, Thin Ice, Peaky Blinder and Boris Citrov, an excellent orange marmalade ale. Needless to say there was little choice left after I cleared the shelf.....

Turfy-agree the food of Waitrose and Markls is outstanding and you pay for their quality. However whether you spend £5 or £10 on wine I doubt whether either can beat Lidl and Aldo for their wines

Nothing second rate about Aldi, lads. All the food is top notch. I'd tae it over Asda and Tesco any day. Really grinds my gears to see a few old timers on here grumbling about it being second rate. I really enjoy cooking, and eating, so I’m happy to pay a slight premium for food.

I’ve only been to Aldi once, but the whole experience from circling the car park to find a space, to being frustrated that I can’t get my whole shopping list from there, to the unpleasant checkout experience and I decided it wasn’t for me. Don’t have a problem with those who like it obviously.

I do my shopping online at Ocado, they price match Tesco. I can do my entire shop in less than 10 minutes whilst sat on the loo and it’s extremely rare that one of the items is substituted. The way I see it is that I’m saving an hour or two of my weekend so that is also worth something. The quality is also v good. They’re switching from Waitrose to M&S towards the end of the year so that will be interesting.

Keelham Farm Shop is the best I've found for fresh fruit and veg. My work takes me over to Skipton so it's quite easy for me to pop in when it's not too busy. Don't go near the place at weekends; it's rammed.

Not many cities with Aldi here but the same German company runs Trader Joe's which is definitely the hipster place to shop.

When I lived in Kentucky we had an Aldi and all my chef friends would buy their fruit and veg as soon as they opened because of the quality

So no it might not keep as long but that's the point of fresh, ripe food
