Sunderland v Newcastle at Roker Park sometime in the 70’s

Edit: possibly 79/80 season. Easter, so actually 1980. Sunderland won 1-0. 41,000 on.

Both in with a chance of promotion. Newcastle blew it again.
I presume from the expressions that the ball has gone in the crowd somewhere and they aren't expecting it back soon.
Stewie boam on the right. Not sure of the 3. It has the hair of Irving nattrass but the body of Kenny Wharton.
Atmosphere like that is a thing of the past. But then football like that is a thing of the past. Our style of play is about the closest thing in the Premier league to it. Yet people say that they couldn't watch it every week. Somehow I couldn't see that crowd in the picture getting worked up about 374 passes backwards and forwards in midfield.

Have to say I've only been to Buxton once, that was for the pre-season friendly in 2010. I've still not recovered from walking up to the ground from the Wetherspoons. That's one climb.

Looks like the Roker end of the ground where fans would be segregated(if only by a.step). Covered terrace at the other end was the Fulwell end for.home supporters.' The Roker roar', never experienced it in full voice but I've read a lot about it. Read a great article some years ago where Danny Blanchflower, Spurs captain in the 60's, took his team there for an FA Cup tie and came away with a draw. Sunderland were attacking the Fulwell End in the second half and the crowd became more and more involved. They got a corner and Blanchflower suddenly realised that any instructions he was giving were useless as his players couldn't hear a thing he was saying. That was FA Cup football.

Definitely the Roker End - as for the Roker Roar, there was a bit of noise there when they beat us 5-0 in 1980 but the noise inside the SOL in 2007 when they clinched promotion was ridiculous, you couldn't hear yourself think.

Always enjoyed going to Roker Park and having a beer or two in the Blue Bell I think it was called.
Seem to remember going a couple of times in a short space of time perhaps in the late 70s, might have been cup games, winner was to play Liverpool ? Hell, my memory is bad. Wish I could remember the games I've been to like CT.
