John Jackson
John Jackson
Just reading up on our early 80's history and noticed Jackson replaced Lord for a few seasons. I don't recall much about him. Was he voted on as Chairman? Was he popular? What was his story in that he only lasted a few years?

I’m just reading Tim Quelch’s “From Orient To The Emirates” and he gets decent coverage in there. Whether he was unlucky or not it all seemed downhill with him in charge.

Re: John Jackson
It was a time of collections before the game to try and help bring in transfers
We were at rock bottom as was football generally
Football was out of fashion and crowds at the Turf down below 2000.
It's a little surreal for those that saw all that and now living the dream at the top table
This in part, explains my generations impatience with the present board complaining of financial problems
John Jackson and Burnley didn't have pot to pxxx in but he did his best in very difficult times

Re: John Jackson
Cheers chaps. I remember reasonably well the early 80's considering I was only 6 going on 7-10 years old in those first four years of the decade. Just don't remember much about him. Remember Bob Lord, Bond, Benson, collection buckets etc but his name just doesn't resonate.
Re: John Jackson
JJ was chairman after Lord from about 81-85 whenTeasdale took over and died relatively young at the age of 68 in about 2008.Not a good time to be chairman although at the time there were great hopes having taken the reins of BL

Re: John Jackson
Not sure the collection buckets were in his tenure were they? The golden gate and all that fiasco were a few seasons later. At least he had a promotion during his time so it wasn't all bad. Downhill all the way from there though!
Re: John Jackson
The bucket collection was for David Reeves, who was here in two loan spells between November 1987 and March 1988. That would be under Teasdale.
Jackson did the opposite, if I remember rightly. In 1984-5 towards the end of the season, we were in danger of relegation so the club halved the admission price to get a bigger gate. From £4 down to £2, I seem to remember, but not at all sure. The gates "rocketed" from about 2,500 - in division 3 - to over 4,000. But we still went down!

I am sure Dave has some Derek Gill stories about this period at the club and about Jackson

Re: John Jackson
Wasn't there a "Golden Gate" for Reeves where you paid a bit extra in order to contribute to his transfer fee ? Or have I lost the plot ?dsr wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 5:37 pmThe bucket collection was for David Reeves, who was here in two loan spells between November 1987 and March 1988. Re: John Jackson
And then we didn't sign him - but that's what you got from our club at the time. It was Reeves, 1988 and in the Teasdale era.Stalbansclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 6:03 pmWasn't there a "Golden Gate" for Reeves where you paid a bit extra in order to contribute to his transfer fee ? Re: John Jackson
Met John Jackson once in Burnley, after he had stepped down as Chairman. On the Bond appointment he wanted the best for the club, not the best ground in the 4th Division which basically he got.
Re: John Jackson
He was also one of the best barristers around

Re: John Jackson
I’d rather post about the John Jackson I knew rather than John Jackson the chairman.
He spoke a bit on the posh side so I didn’t think I’d like him but nothing could be further from the truth. I found him such a likeable man, great conversationalist and company. He had a wonderful sense of humour, could talk and talk and he could charm the birds out of the trees.
The last time I saw him was in January 2007 inside the Madejski Stadium on the afternoon our FA Cup tie was postponed. I knew he wasn’t well by then but we were able to have a really nice conversation along with his daughter Rebekah.
Did he make mistakes as chairman? Too true he did. Did he get things right as chairman? Absolutely. But whatever he got right and wrong, everything he did was because he thought it the right thing to do for the club. He was, just like us, very much a Claret who cared so much for the club and did so until he passed away.

Re: John Jackson
I bumped into him in a bar in Shepherd's Bush after we played Fulham at Loftus Rd. He spotted my scarf and came over to chat. Never met the bloke before in my life but must have spent a good 15 minutes talking about BFC. For all the rights and wrongs of his time as Chairman, as Tony says, he was so obviously a fan. A very engaging man.
Also through this and the previous site I got to know his daughter who i know is as passionate a fan as her father was and from experience equally as easy to talk to.

Re: John Jackson
NNN vol 2 has all the Derek Gill stories and diary and the state the club was in.
NNN vol 1 has the story of the JJ period but doesn't do Derek Gill proper justice.
The JJ period included Mr Bond.
Yes JJ was a wonderfully entertaining bloke and great raconteur.
Derek Gill put the club on a superb financial footing after the Lord debts, but... it all went pear shaped.
There's a book in there somewhere...

Re: John Jackson
John was definitely a fan and passionate about the club my abiding memory of him was on the night of promotion down at Southend. We were all on the big open end and after the final whistle he clambered out of the Directors box to come to the end of the stand facing us and joined in the celebrations.
