Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
Following on from the Best ever individual performance topic, now what's the worst performance you have seen by a Burnley player ?
Diego Penny, Sheffield Wednesday away first game of the season conceded 3 in 17 mins on his debut. Did we ever see him again ?

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
Don't think you can get a worse performance than Akinbiyi's debut at home!
Seems slightly harsh but another that sticks in the mind was a pre season friendly against accy, one of the young defenders (Anderson?) had a proper shocker first half! Think we were about 3-0 down after about 30mins.

Seen some shockers over the years,it would be unfair to single out one player, because there is 100s of em!☺

Clarke Carlisle had a howler in the prem. I believe it was Portsmouth. Only time I have ever suspected Burnley player of match fixing.

Dane Richards?
Akinbiyi feels a little harsh for all the great performances, but agreed possibly the worst ever debut (not just for the Clarets!)

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
Dave Jones is one that springs to mind. Not our most recent Dave Jones (midfield) but the one who was supposed to be a striker that we got from Doncaster (I think) in 1989. Unless my memory is playing tricks it was in a home game against Scunthorpe 11th March 89. Absolutely useless. He seemed to be about 6 feet 4 but couldn't win a header to save his life and I don't think he knew he had feet. Poor lad - I've always tried to "back" our players but he was probably the most difficult to do so during that game. (Notable other mentions for Nick Pickering and of course Mark (Ratner) Kendall @ Blackpool (a).

Flanagan in the LC at Accy, he was run ragged by a L2 winger.
Gibson in the 5-1 drubbing off Everton, wonder whatever happened to him.
Kev Mac City at home, thankfully he only played the first half before retiring to the pub.
I'm sure they'll be plenty more that I'll recall, this will be a busy thread.

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
Akinbiyi for me, by some distance. Okay, he didn’t make mistakes leading to goals, miss sitters etc etc. But for (I presume) record signing to be sent off within 2 minutes on his debut is a terrible performance.

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
Clarke is a good shout to win Best (Wembley) and Worst (Pompey or Doncaster away).
However the correct answer is Brian Easton. Not in the infamous 2-3 v Leeds, as he was up against a decent player there. But in a 2-0 loss at Barnsley. Got absolutely destroyed by some fella with a beard who I assumed was Messi but was just some journeyman still several levels above our Brian.

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
Two stand out for me when one of our players was so bad that it felt like we were playing ten against twelve.
Malcolm Smith v Stoke (a) - 1978/79
Andy Wharton v Millwall (a) - 1983/84
I’ve seen worse team performance etc. but in context of the games, these two were the worst.

Thankfully I didn’t attend his one match but surprised Tony Woodworth hasn’t been mentioned.

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
Stanislas was pretty rank one game early on in the Dyche era, I think there came a point where he just gave up chasing one ball and was hooked shortly thereafter, probably not the worst performance ever but one I do recall from our recent past.

My memory might be playing tricks but I recall Gibson being one of the better players (best of a bad bunch) at home v Everton and Kev Mc certainly wasn't the worst at home v Man City when he got pulled at h/t.tiger76 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 12:59 pmFlanagan in the LC at Accy, he was run ragged by a L2 winger.

Dane Richards was absolutely woeful. Was it Barnsley at home on a Tuesday evening? He came on as an early sub.....then was subbed. Way out of his depth!!!

Huddersfield when Richards came and went. He’d previously come on as a sub in the FA Cup tie at Barnsley. He was quick but I’m not sure what else I can say about him.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 5:50 pmMy memory might be playing tricks but I recall Gibson being one of the better players (best of a bad bunch) at home v Everton and Kev Mc certainly wasn't the worst at home v Man City when he got pulled at h/t.

David Jones as mentioned above. Considering the level we were at, we thought we couldn't get a player worse than we already had. Then David Jones pulled on our shirt. He couldn't head, he couldn't pass, he couldn't shoot, he couldn't run. He made Nick Pickering look good!

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
Ian Helliwell away at Hull
Remember Jamie Hoyland putting in a stinker in a cup game in the dying days of the Mullen regime. Looking at the games we played it was probably 1st round loss vs Walsall in November '95.
The game itself wasn't memorable and Hoyland, although dreadful, wasn't the stand out poor performer (everybody was) but I was sat directly behind the dugout and heard Hoyland just apologizing profusely as he was subbed off.
He knew how badly he'd played.

Crikey Dane Richards that's a name to conjure nightmares for any Clarets, he might have been a Dane, but he most certainly wasn't great.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 5:50 pmMy memory might be playing tricks but I recall Gibson being one of the better players (best of a bad bunch) at home v Everton and Kev Mc certainly wasn't the worst at home v Man City when he got pulled at h/t.

As previously mentioned Clarke Carlisle at Doncaster. Didn't he go on the CM board after that to defend himself against some pretty low shots about him being back on the bottle?

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
He wasn't on long from what I can remember, but Amadou Sanokho came on in a home game some time in 2004 (think he had previously come on against Leeds away too) and I just could not believe this guy was a professional footballer.
Harsh perhaps to put him in there considering some of the names mentioned above (I'd have to agree with Diego Penny - at least two of the goals were down to him, he had no command of his box and looked like a rabbit in headlights. Fair to say the entire team was a joke that day, however) but he always sticks out in my mind does Sanokho. His touch and ball control made Ian Moore look like Bergkamp.

He was actually clean through at Leeds late on with a chance to make it 3.1 unsurprisingly he missed!jedi_master wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 6:36 pmHe wasn't on long from what I can remember, but Amadou Sanokho came on in a home game some time in 2004 (think he had previously come on against Leeds away too) and I just could not believe this guy was a professional footballer.

Fredriksen Ulvestad away at Fulham, think it was our Championship winning season, literally did nothing the night long.
The away fans wouldn't have noticed as this was the night of the Ben Mee song.

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
It’s Mark Kendall for me as well On debut, Blackpool 5 - 2 Burnley , he was just as bad in his next and last game for us in the abandoned( for fog )FA cup game against Derby away! After that Chris pierce was recalled, and he had a shocker in the rearranged cup game

TBH there have been some horrendous performances over the years but Tarks against Villa on New Years Day was bloody awful. Not the worst by a long way but I still feel he'd been on the lash the night before. It was a lousy team performance but he was the one that stood out.

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
I’d definitely include that one as a candidate. Shows how little faith Mullen had in Pearce, he’d brought Kendall in as a goalkeeping coach and then played him. He’d been a very good goalkeeper but he wasn’t that day.Claret Till I Die wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 7:34 pmMark Kendall at Blackpool 1992. He was just awful

Re: Worst ever individual performance by a Burnley player ?
Two games with Ron Futcher in the starting XI spring to mind...
One was a game against Stoke in the FA Cup that we actually won in 1990. Every time he got the ball he seemed to either lose it or miss the target.
The other was an away game at Lincoln during the same season, where the ball came to him about five yards from goal, but instead of shooting, he put his foot on the ball, thus allowing the keeper and defender the time to recover and ensure the chance was gone.
Blimey, we were bad back then!

He did have a shocker but it was the week he had been on Countdown and getting lots of press attention. I felt his head was never into the game.

Did he play in the chesterfield game on New Year’s Day? 2-0 Burnley, the program for that game has Chris Pierce in goal! Just asking, as the fog of time sometimes distorts the memoryBordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 8:11 pmThe Blackpool game was his third, he kept a clean sheet on his debut.
