Albert Cheesebrough passes away

Sad news - Albert Cheesebrough has passed away.

Local lad Albert also, I believe, played Lancashire League Cricket for Lowerhouse. Football wise, he played 158 games for Burnley between 1952 and 1959 and went on to play in an FA Cup Final for Leicester.

My thoughts with his family and friends at this sad time.

Remember 'Cheesy' well, he was a quality inside-left with a powerful shot. It was only the emergence of a certain Jimmy Robson that prevented Albert having a longer career at Burnley and no doubt a League Championship medal in '59/'60. Think he left us in the summer of '59 just a few weeks before the start of the big season.

Only saw him play a couple of times when i first started to watch the Clarets...i seem to remember him shooting once and it must have gone 20 feet above the crossbar..

RIP Albert. My Dad spoke fondly of him as a player. My Dad being a teenager around the time he played for us.

Bob Lord mentioned in his book that officials from Man United approached him shortly after the Munich disaster
enquiring about the possibility of taking Albert to Old Trafford.
He replied that, sadly, he could not hold out much hope of such a valuable player being allowed to leave Turf Moor.

Never saw him myself, but a great player by all accounts.

I remember seeing Albert play for us, at the same time as Doug Newlands, Les Shannon, Bobby Seith etc, though I was very young and I can't honestly remember much about him or the whole team at that time. He was a Claret and as someone said made a name for himself at Rosegrove school (I went to Rosegrove juniors before going to the new Lowerhouse school), so I always felt I had an affinity with him. Always sad to see another Claret fade away, but he will always be remembered in the record books. RIP Albert.

Remember seeing him a couple of times when my dad took us to Turf Moor/ Burden Park and Ewood by bus around 57/58 for my brother and I to choose a club we could get to by bus on our own.
Thank heavens over 60 years ago Turf Moor was the easiest by far to get to.
We got to see Hartle and Bankes the Bolton henchmen who would be sent off every match nowadays

Was it fairly common to play LLC and footy at that time, I'm guessing it probably was, as the players wouldn't have been earning huge salaries back in the minimum wage days.

Cheesy was one of my first Turf Moor heroes. I started watching Burnley with my Dad aged about three or four (No later than four as my Dad died when I was that age.) By the time he left in 59 I knew a bit more about football and had even been to a couple of away games on my own but Cheesy was certainly a player I enjoyed watching, although I don't remember any particular games he played in.

Strange really, a pal of mine from that time is in Southport this week. Coincidence or what?

Another one here who remembers him playing in my early days of being introduced to the Turf. I hadn't realised, until reading above, that I watched all his Burnley career!

He wouldn't have been earning any money from playing Lancashire League cricket but a number of players did. Before my time, besides Albert, Peter Kippax played for Burnley and more recently Martin Dobson played for Rishton while Leighton James played for both Burnley and Lowerhouse. Micky Phelan also played for Nelson although not as much as his brother.

Couple of weeks ago, on the opening day of the 1972/73 season, we drew 2-2 against Carlisle who included Chris Balderstone in their team. He was an England test player. Last week, Jim Cumbes was in goal for Aston Villa in the next home game. Jim played country cricket for a number of counties.

Couldn't happen now, the demands on professional footballers would make it impossible.

RIP Albert. I remember him very well, mainly because his mother stood behind me on the old Bee Hole End, just to the left of the goal (if looking at the goal from the field).
I remember her so well because she hit with her umbrella a bloke who was complaining very loudly about Albert’s performance one game. She would be sued these days but then she got lots of support from the people around. I was only a little lad but I remember it well.
Albert was a good player but the arrival of McIlroy and Les Shannon and eventually Robson meant that we could sell him. Like many local lads at that time they got a lot of criticism from the crowd and he found greater success at Leicester.
My condolences to Albert’s family - he will always be remembered as a fine Claret.

Albert was a member of what Jimmy Mac used to call the midget forward line of Newlands, McIlroy, McKay, Chresebrough & Pilkington. Jimmy was the tallest. Sadly, all five gone now.

If memory serves me correct it was a wet and muddy day on the Turf, we were attacking the Bee Hole end, it was Jack Kelsey in goal, Albert received a pass well outside the penalty area and immediately let fly, bang on target, Kelsey got both hands to it, but due to the velocity and weight of the saturated casey he finished up with the ball on his bum in the back of the net.
He went to Rosegrove with my recently departed brother in law Derek BAKER.
