Burnley to play Maritimo on Friday

Post by RBFC » Mon Sep 07, 2020 5:18 pm

After Saturday’s friendlies it was announced a match on Friday was in the pipeline.

It looks as though the game has been arranged and we are playing Maritimo

https://www.futebol365.pt/artigo/240897 ... xta-feira/

Marítimo will travel to England to play with Burnley on Friday, in the last test of the Madeiran formation before the start of the Portuguese First League of football.

The English team, who ended the previous season in 10th position in the Premier League, saw the first round match against Manchester United, by Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, initially scheduled for September 12, postponed due to the ' red devils' ended the season later by reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League, and, to make up for the lack of competition, invited the club 'green red' to a preparation game.
Before heading to England, where the match against Burnley is scheduled for Friday, at 15:00, the maritime team will face Sporting on Wednesday, ending the cycle of five games inserted in the stage in Lousada.

I found out this morning that they were the opponents and then a message board member emailed me this afternoon to say he was in Madeira and seen it in the papers there.

I believe it will be on the Turf but I thought it was Saturday, although the link confirms Friday.

I res somewhere that Maritimo have a number of Brazilian players.
Might be a good opportunity to see whether any of them have the potential to
play in the Premiership.

Who knows?

Unless they're full Brazilian internationals, it's unlikely they'd get work permits.

Brazil is a former Portuguese colony. That's not a surprise. Highly unlikely they have anyone who'd qualify to play here.

Ill be the d1ck, its very rare for a football player to switch to rugby mid career. Between League and Union possibly yes, but not a complete different sport like football to rugby.

Plus I think the pay packet is far better in football, so why swap?

As it's on the Turf, I wonder if Phil Bird will be doing a commentary? Maybe it could be streamed?

Paulclaret has already said there would be work permit issues with Brazilians but you are right, they’ve loads of them.

I had an article ready which I published once the game was in the public domain. I mentioned the Brazilian contingent in that.

I live in Madeira and watch Maritimo regularly when i'm not in the UK, and yes they do have lots of Brazilians in their squad but the side normally only contains 3 or 4 Brazilians like many other Portuguese teams.
They are, like many Portuguese sides, very skilful but a little weak at set pieces and could struggle against Clarets at dead ball situations.Having said that they beat Benfica 2-0 towards the end of the season when it was looking like they would be in relegation trouble and then went on a good run to finish 11th.
They have added to their squad well and are unbeaten pre season for what its worth !
Should be a good test for both sides !!!

Does make you wonder why the game was arranged though with Covid about. Maybe we are wanting to run the rule over one of their players and it was seen as an opportunity to do so.

Anyway, I'm sure it will be another good run out for about 20 players, with subs all over the place.

Why are you being a d1ck for correcting him?

It's been known as the Premier League for 13 years and the FA Premier League before that. It's beyond me how anyone can still get the name wrong.

Thank goodness we've had[by comparison} very few cases of Covid 19 here in Madeira and no recorded deaths so about as safe as it gets i suppose.

I hadn’t a clue what he was on about until I read your post

I thought he’d either lost the plot or posted on the wrong thread

Who could we have played? All the leagues in England start this week.

Good point. Scottish teams start on Saturday as well. Maybe we could have played Villa as their game is the other one postponed? Probably not a good idea though.

That’s been the problem, no UK teams available and I don’t think we would want to play another Premier League team. I think it’s also been difficult getting a European team because of the restrictions.

Spot on Tony. Furthermore, if UK imposes quarantine measures on travel from Portugal this Thursday, it would in all probability be effective 4am Saturday so it would be after the game.
Maritimo are currently in mainland Portugal where I believe they have a friendly against Sporting on Wednesday.
