How are L1 and L2 teams financing games ?

Post by s6t9a2f3f » Mon Sep 14, 2020 10:42 am

Are they getting any help with the finance of playing games behind closed doors ? or are owners digging deep to plug the shortfalls and hopefully bridge the gaps until crowds are allowed ? If crowds are delayed throughout the entire season can you see plenty of clubs going into admin ?

Same question I've been asking over the last 6/7 months. It's just not viable and I always take local club, Accrington Stanley, as a prime example. I've no idea of the weekly running costs of such a club but with no end to the pandemic in sight there must be a limit as to how long they and many other clubs can survive.

It's a good question. Have players taken big wage cuts for the duration? I don't see how they'd have continued trading this long otherwise.

Think the general consensus was it's not viable to carry on behind closed doors for any length of time. If they can't get fans back they'll put the season on hold.

Rochdale chairman was on the radio on Saturday, said £8000 would pay 2 players for 1 month. On that basis guess they are on £50,000 a year.

The chairman at afc Fylde states that he puts in about £100k/month to keep them ticking over

Andy Holt said the club would lose over £1m this season without normal fan activities, and he will have to cover the losses unless football forune comes their way - their wage bill is likely to be a £1m+ under the salary cap

if that continued at that investment level football could lose a entire division as a long term covid prospect. More part time leagues would be required ?

I agree, and the precedence was set last season - lets stop it now and promote Accy Stanley and Swindon to the Championship :D

About time the Premier League started contributing towards their costs. If the Premier League teams can pay 100/200/300,000 a week surely they can help the lower league clubs out!!

I thought that was one of the conditions of "project restart". The government and FA need to be doing all they can to make sure some of the money at the top trickles down.

Aston Villa, Newcastle. Everton and Sheffield United have trickled down a huge amount in transfer fees

On the Quest highlights programme last season, Ian Holloway said that playing behind closed doors reduced Grimsby's income by 50%. Not sure how that works, but at that rate something will have to change before too long.
