Jimmy Dunne / Josh Benson

Post by jedi_master » Thu Sep 17, 2020 7:40 pm

I know we need new signings, desperately in some areas (especially after JBG's injury), but these two staked their claim for me tonight.

That was a committed game between two Prem teams which wanted to win, and both really impressed me. Dunne was dominant in the air and largely faultless throughout. Benson only had 15-20 minutes but looked full of confidence and sprayed some great passes around, looks a player.

Some causes for optimism.

Completely agree. We could have felt sorry for ourselves but those two typified a dogged effort. I’m sure they’ll get another chance at the Den.

Jimmy Dunne looked as if he’d been studying Tarky for me tonight. And Bensons cameo showcased confidence in his passing ability, I was impressed with how he carried the ball out of the box under pressure and played a nice pass out - showed class, let’s hope they can both kick on .

Benson can’t be allowed to go out on loan for me with the numbers we have currently

I only heard the part of the second half of the game on the radio... How was Dunne with the ball on the deck? Being dominant in the air is one thing, against many of the PL teams though, it’s perhaps not a primary attribute.

I think we're jumping the gun a little if we imply they ought to be pushing for the first team once we have a fully fit squad. Especially if we make 2 or 3 key signings.

But they both played well tonight and equipped themselves well. Congratulations to both players and they've done themselves proud.

They've proven they're not out of place in the first team and deserve to be in and around the squad and that's great to see.

Looked absolutely fine. He didn't try any ambitious Tarky style passes, but he kept it simple and didn't give it away.

To be clear Rowls, that's what I am saying really. If Tarky left, we would need to sign a first choice centre back.

I would, however, be more than happy with Dunne replacing Gibson as the backup option alongside Long (personally). Equally, I am happy with Benson taking the Drinkwater place as the backup CM to hopefully allow us to spend big on a wing option or two.

Happy for Dunne to be fourth choice, Benson is currently third choice with Cork being out for the foreseeable future. We need a minimum of 2 wingers, or 1 winger, 1 Hendrick/Brownhill type who can fill both positions.

Dunne is a good example of how difficult the path is for our U23s to progress to 1st team.
2 seasons back he was earning plaudits in Scotland (Hearts) and has hardly progressed since.

Wouldn't disagree with that. Sheffield are a decent side. Physical, well drilled and with a threat. Both played well and if Mee is due back in 2 or 3 then provided Tarks stays I think we have backup without needing to spend to backfill there. Feeling a LOT more positive after those performances- Benson was a bit of a cameo but got involved straight away and looked confident

Wasn’t able to watch the match. But really pleased to hear some of the young lads performed.

What would you say there individuals strengths were? And did they look out of place?

Benson has been someone I have kept on eye on, I was hoping he could step up eventually

They didnt look out of place but it must be put into context, a Sheff Utd second team with 5 new debutants in 2nd round League Cup in front of nobody. So not exactly Leicester away on Sunday with a top top striker to defend against. I'd put money on Vardy bagging a few if Dunne & Bensen play. I guess they arent fully ready for a Prem start but definitely should continue next week against Millwall.

Strengths have been mentioned already on the thread

I think most on here will know I've been impressed with Josh Benson since he first came on trial towards the end of the 2017/18 season. Last summer I saw him play for the first team at Crewe in a pre-season game and he looked a long way away. I was sat with the parents of one of the other U23 players that day and we couldn't believe it was the same Josh Benson we'd seen previously in the U23s. I'm sure it was down to nerves and being a bit overawed by it all but since then he's been and played some first team football at Grimsby and that will have helped him enormously.

I'm not suggesting for one minute he's a Premier League footballer, but he came on tonight, in a tight game, got quarter of an hour and looked confident.

Jimmy Dunne has a lot more experience. I liked him when I saw him play but because of loans I've hardly seen him in the last two years. Again he did well. They are certainly not the answer to the holes in our first team squad but I think we can all be delighted with the way they played tonight and know that they do have something to offer going forward.

I'm really pleased for both of them.

Dunne did ok tonight but there is a reason he couldn't get regular games with Sunderland or Fleetwood in League One.

It would be folly to now think he'd be a good 4th choice (currently 3rd choice) centre back option for the season.

Benson I've seen quite a lot of in the u23s and I've always thought he was a good player. I'm pleased for him that he held his own in the time he got tonight.

Obviously after just 1 game (or 15 minutes for Benson) we will all reserve judgement. Dunne didn't prove he can't play in the Premier; on the other hand, there were one or two too many moments where a Sheffield player had a bit too much room in the penalty area. First game, though. He'll certainly improve with experience.

Our club can't afford premier league players for 4th choice centre back and central midfield.
The U23s need to provide them and these two have done themselves no harm what so ever.

Spend the available money on the first 11 and match changing sub.

The trouble is Gibson was, theoretically, a third choice who could be a first team player with Long as fourth choice.

Dunne as fourth choice isn't really an issue but if it means Long is third choice then it's a weaker option.

We generally got away with it with the minimal number of games the first choice defenders missed but I don't think anyone would be keen on Long playing many more games than he did last year.

Every Burnley fan and their dog would love these two to make it. Neither did anything wrong today but neither showed they were anything special either.

It will be tremendous for us if two players playing in League one previously can step up to premier League level so for me it's just a pipe dream. But it does show some progress in our development, even if it is only slightly so.

I'd love to know what Dyche really does think of them both.

One of them is a 20 year old lad who has never even played in League One. And he was only on the pitch for 15 minutes and looked neat and tidy. Not sure what you wanted him to do. Both of them have benefited from playing first team football elsewhere. Whatever level they do eventually reach we don't know but I don't think we should be talking pipe dreams or anything else. They are just two young players getting a first experience of first team football at Burnley.

Benson in League two, you're right.
Just keeping my expectations low. It's a big jump to make which will help their own careers even if it doesn't help us in the long term. You can only hope though.. And there's no harm in hope.

As for what I wanted them to do, well I'm sure they both would have dreamt themselves as having stand out performances, as it stands they were both very solid, which is great.

We've no real idea how good Dunne is, he's been out on loan with bang average teams. Put Tarks in that Sunderland team and he wont look anywhere near as good as he does alongside Mee.

Ben Godfrey looked bang average in a crap Norwich team - pretty sure he would look far better alongside Mee

I hope we give Dunne an opportunity as and when we can, might just save us a few quid on the likes of Worrall

I am old enough to remember when we threw in several of our FA youth cup winning team into a struggling and ageing first team and all did well and progressed
I saw Josh Benson play in a couple of friendlies and thought he looked decent and was expecting a first team sub role last season
Jimmy is a very good cb and at 23 should be on the bench weekly
I dont get this negativity towards our players.
Trust them in our team we need to show our U23 that there is a path to the first team if they show promise

Nobody is being negative, just dealing with facts.

Every single Burnley fan would like to see them progress into regular first team players, you just can’t put any expectation on them. I’d imagine it will be Dunnes last season with us if he isnt going to step up to become a first team squad player, I really hope he does though.

Sounds like a great opportunity to give them experience and the three fringe players took their chance

Lets not get carried away though. The majority of the PL sides have real quality strikers and attacking midfielders and full backs. You only need half a second of losing concentration and the likes of Salah, Fernandes, Ings,Vardy Aubaymeyang,Zaha,Kane_could go on with at least 30-40 names, but these will absolutely crucify you.We were up against Sheff Utd reserves. Dont take me as being negative, but on a positive compared to post match lockdown we now have a handful of "newcomers" who can be on the bench, that wont let you down. If Benson gets the SD nurturing he could become a great player as could Dunne

Bobby Thomas is a better player than Jimmy Dunne and 5 years younger

Both looked ok but remember we were playing Sheff utd reserves so lets not get carried away - a decent premier team tonight and we would have taken a hiding

That was not Sheffield United's reserve team in any way. Wilder hasn't signed all those debutants to play reserve team football, that's for sure.

That was practically Sheffield’s starting eleven last season except for the new signings. As Tony mentions they haven’t been brought in to sit on the bench

Some players look like that.

Not sure anybody is getting carried away, but those who entertain themselves on here after a defeat are a little frustrated and will have to wait for a few days. Yes they made changes but also had 2 players 1 costing over 20m and 1 just under 20m, a highly rated loanee from Chelsea plus 2 new summer signings (including 1 people on here wanted) as well as Norwood who people thought we should sign due to him being a Burnley lad.

Sheffield United harried and pressed as well as any premier league side I have seen last night. So if was a very good test for the lads and showed they won't panic.

You don't have to be anything special in a Dyche side. Just don't panic, know your role and keep doing the basics well.
