PS5
Re: PS5
In all seriousness, when was the last time a truly new game was released and what was it? and not just a remake/rehash/rename of an existing game like Fifa XX; or Assassins Creed etc
It's all well and good making the hardware better, but it's constantly polishing the turd dont you think?
In terms of when for me - I've still got till March 2021 for my XBox Game Pass subscription - so will wait till then at least. Colleagues are signing up for the £28.99/month for 24 months deal for the XBox Series X which includes Game Pass and EA Access.

Re: PS5
There's been a few recently that I thought were great. Death Stranding and Sekiro are 2 that come to mind. I don't really go for the Assassins Creed/CoD type of annual games, I agree that these are the same game released once a year.Zlatan wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 11:24 amIn all seriousness, when was the last time a truly new game was released and what was it? and not just a remake/rehash/rename of an existing game like Fifa XX; or Assassins Creed etc

Re: PS5
and that's why I'm going to wait, never wise to change when technology is about to take a leap forward imhosuperdimitri wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 6:29 amBasically, yeah.
The only true way to future proof will be the LG OLEDs and that's because they are the only TVs that tick all the boxes.
Sadly if you want an LCD TV instead, perhaps because your usage is susceptible to burn in then you can't check all those boxes.
- Capable with HDR (remarkable how many TVs don't meet this criteria).
Dolby Vision support - not integral as a non Dolby Vision TV will fall back to HDR10, but nonetheless promised titles in 2021.
HDMI 2.1 VRR
And if you are buying a TV smaller than 55" your choice is even worse.
And if you are buying a smaller TV with a limited budget you're basically out of luck completely.
In my own opinion the quality of HDR reproduction on a TV is first and foremost the most important factor, with a limited budget in the UK the Hisense U8Q is looking to be the best buy. It lacks VRR but it's so much cheaper than competing TVs. Hisense sell there TVs close to cost.
To get similar kind of HDR from a Korean/Japanese brand you need to look at LG OLEDs, Sony OLEDs, Panasonic OLEDs, the Samsung Q90T or Sony XH9505 LCD TVs. LG OLEDs ticks all, Samsung ticks all but Dolby Vision. Sony LCD TV and OLEDs/Panasonic OLEDs are like the Hisense U8Q and ticks all but HDMI VRR.
As with all new tech expect teething issues, things won't work as intended to begin with and if you do buy close to release you can expect problems that may never be fixed. Don't become a beta tester for new tech and wait for people to review and test the consoles with TVs first.
If you can wait until 2021 or 2022 even better. If you are buying an LCD that's even more important to remember as soon they will look out of date. Samsung are in the process of dumping LCD TV production for their higher end TVs and will be buying 3rd party panels for there TVs instead. They'll move soon to OLEDs themselves. So beware if you do buy now, that LCD TV may look a little more out of date sooner than you'd think.
Don't touch LGs/Panasonic LCD TVs. You may be tempted looking at specs that they tick a lot of boxes. They aren't bad TVs for watching general TV but they don't make the cut at all in this modern HDR era.
Worth also be a bit wary with the BX OLED supporting HDMI 2.1 VRR properly, wait for tests with the consoles first.
Outside of Europe basically TCL/Hisense again are the best value options on a budget TCL R625/Hisense H9G. Vizio may be competitive but like other cheaper TVs lack HDMI 2.1 VRR.
Sony XH9505 sold as X950H in NA.
Beware all LCD TVs have poor viewing angles, particularly one's that aren't the very highest end.
Best time to buy a TV is spring each year as the new models are announced, released and older go on clearance sales. Second best time is between Black Friday and January sales.
Last bit of advice: don't get tricked by marketing. QLED is not a new display tech like OLED, it's marketing for LCD TVs.
HDR - every TV and his dog accepts the signal, but very few (more expensive) models can display it correctly and without issues .
In absolute worse case scenario if you can't afford a capable HDR TV you can just disable HDR on the console some titles may also let you configure HDR to work with less problems on cheaper TVs but it's a workaround that may not always be possible.

Not strictly true. Some games may be 30fps at 4k, or 60 with reduced graphics. So if you go for the higher tier console always playing at HD you'll be guaranteed a higher rate with the best graphics.claret2018 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 9:33 amThat makes sense. Has anyone else watched the PS5 teardown video yet?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaAY-jAjm0w (You can click to activate subtitles).
Seems a clever piece of design with the removable base and its screw storage. I like that the panels can be so easily removed -- this surely makes way for some very interesting customised panels from different games, for example. Also looks like the cooling will be much more efficient and it shouldn't sound like a jet when running a game. I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge than me can offer more insight but it's very interesting all the same.

It's basically no different to a small form factor computer. Hate the look of the thing though. Looks like a big outdated wireless router.
Storage is going to be a problem, but it's nice with the ps5 you can install your own drive whereas with the Xbox you will have to buy a proprietary one.
The push to ssd means capacity is low at a time when game installs are getting bigger and bigger. The latest call or duty on PC takes up almost an entire 512gb drive and that's a game that's been released before the consoles! Imagine the storage requirements of some games in one or two years!

Playing Ghosts of Tsushima at the moment, and I agree, even though it is a very good game, it has taken the best bits of games like Assassins Creed, the Witcher etc and evolved it.Zlatan wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 11:24 amIn all seriousness, when was the last time a truly new game was released and what was it? and not just a remake/rehash/rename of an existing game like Fifa XX; or Assassins Creed etc

For me the two most original games on current-gen have been No Mans Sky and Shadow of Mordor (mainly due to the Nemesis system). Also Death Stranding I guess, although I haven't played that.
Someone posted earlier about how can games keep getting better? Well for me it is advanced AI and seamless loading times. The graphics are already great, but the increased power of next-gen will hopefully unlock much more innovative gaming experiences.
I've got big hopes for Cyberpunk 2077
Also regarding ps4/ps5 I've read that some games are offering remastered ps5 versions of their game for free, which is pretty cool.
And if you are undecided, some games such as Cyberpunk could in theory be bought on ps4 and then when you buy a ps5 later in the year, you can play the ps5 version from where you left off.

I agree about the appearance -- I'm not a massive fan although I'm slowly getting used to it. Regarding the storage of Call of Duty, are they doing that on purpose? It's massively bloated and I'm not sure it needs to be. I wonder if they do it so they can force people to have less games installed on their consoles and thus people are less likely to switch games?superdimitri wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 12:23 pmIt's basically no different to a small form factor computer. Re: PS5
Me too! Looks a lot of fun. I'm particularly interested in the futuristic city setting and its scale. I was watching an interested video the other day about the scale of it. While it might not be as big as something like The Witcher 3, the density (particularly vertical) of the city will make it feel very big.
There's a lot more packed into it while The Witcher 3's points of interest more spread out. There will probably be so many things to see and do that moving across the city will take some time and make the map feel much bigger as a result. Can't wait to explore it!

It's getting to that point more with games. Not saying every one will use that much space but it's certainly not going to get better.williamjblazkowicz wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 5:17 pmI agree about the appearance -- I'm not a massive fan although I'm slowly getting used to it. I don't think it's on purpose. Just natural growth. I did read that you can store games on an ext HDD and transfer them across quickly though. Hopefully prices on SSD drives come down.

I managed to get one, absolutely love it.
Astro’s Playroom which is included is absolutely superb, gives you a real show as to what the new pad can do.
I personally think Microsoft have dropped a clanger with their new console, but time will tell.

Has anybody played both the PS and Xbox and can compare?
Growing up, Playstation ruled. I bought an Xbox purely just for lockdown in March so I could keep in touch with my nephews. I wasn't impressed overall.

Re: PS5
Not true regarding the Xbox. You can use any external SSD or HDD drive you like, it's just that only the proprietary Expansion Card can make use of all the Series X's graphical bells and whistles/Velocity Architecture because of its insane read/write speeds, which will be the case for the PS5 too. Normal hard drives and even some SSDs will be a bottleneck because they just can't access information as quickly.superdimitri wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 12:23 pmIt's basically no different to a small form factor computer. Re: PS5
Xbox Series X is great for playing old games better, and then multi platform games like Assassins Creed Valhalla at worse performance than the PS5, but that's about it. I have seen countless comments from people not even realising a new Xbox was out such is the lack of hype and publicity around it, but can you blame them when the 'Launch Games' are all available on the last gen Xbox?FactualFrank wrote: ↑Mon Nov 23, 2020 10:29 amHas anybody played both the PS and Xbox and can compare?

Playstation is the only place to play exclusive games and the launch line up of Astro's Playroom (free with the console, and absolutely outstanding), Spider-Man Miles Morales, Demons Souls, Sackboy, Godfall, Bugsnax which are all not available on Xbox (with Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet and Clank, God of War 2, Horizon 2 off the top of my head releasing in 2021 also exclusively). IF however, you're not bothered about those games, 100% I would get an Xbox as it's Gamepass service is very cheap (caveated with the fact that the games tend to be a combination of old, poorly received or irrelevant).
There is a reason Playstation has been the best selling console everytime over the Xbox though...
(Yes, I realise I sound like a fanboy and I certainly do prefer Playstation as a platform, but at the end of the day get whichever suits you best!)

Re: PS5
As I mentioned when I started the thread, I pre-ordered a PS5 and it came on time last Thursday morning. Very impressed so far. The controller is fantastic, especially the adaptive triggers. You can see how these work in Call of Duty: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bzr7a1gnzgw
Nice UI but takes a little bit of getting used to in terms of navigating (or it does for me at least). Have played a little bit of Astro's Playroom which, as Jambounchained has already mentioned, is a nice showcase of what the controller can do.
Visually, we can see the benefits of ray tracing in games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales with the reflections in the skyscraper windows and in puddles etc. Looks quite impressive. Myself, I've mostly been playing Days Gone. Was a PS4 title from a couple of years ago but had been meaning to play it and it's included in the PS Plus Collection.
For people with PS5, it's worth adding any PS Plus Collection titles you're interested in to your library (you don't need to download them). That way, if they're removed from the collection, you'll still have access to them.
Edit - Forgot to mention that I bought the PS5 also so I can use the 4K Bluray player. Have watched a few on that so far and all fine, quite happy with it. The media remote is decent as well. Certainly makes navigating menus a little bit easier.

Re: PS5
Playstation has had the best of the exclusives for a while now, and the new machine looks to have the edge over the Xbox.
I do think the Microsoft game pass will be brilliant in the coming years though, with all Microsoft exclusive games being available on it on release.
I’ve got a series S and plan on getting a ps5 once they come back into stock. It’s the first time I’ve gone for both in a generation of consoles but the Microsoft’s pricing on the series S has justified it for me.

You can only run old games direct this way. The new 'optimised' games won't run at all. The external USB SSD are also a lot slower than the NVME custom dives you can add to the PS5.MiltonKeynesClaret93 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 23, 2020 10:55 amNot true regarding the Xbox. What's worse is how overpriced the Xbox 1TB drive is, you can buy a 2TB drive for the same money for the PS5.

It's all explained on there, it does make a difference for playing 4k gaming which I didn't know about, but the very knowledgeable lad in Curry's did, which I was greatful for.

Re: PS5
Trust me “ the quality of an hdmi port “ is not a thing . It really isn’t . I can only imagine you have misunderstood or the lad was not that knowledgeable.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 10:20 amhttps://news.xbox.com/en-us/2017/11/22/ ... ence-xbox/

OK fine, whatever you want to insist on is up to you, but the site suggests you're wrong.Untinted Glasses wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 11:25 amTrust me “ the quality of an hdmi port “ is not a thing . It really isn’t . I can only imagine you have misunderstood or the lad was not that knowledgeable.

The boys are more than happy with the TV, that's all that really matters to me, so I'm not fussed.

Re: PS5
Not particularly.
You questioned my terminology, I've provided a link to support what I've said and you've dismissed it as wrong despite it being the link to the parent company, that was after you said the staff at Curry's were clueless.
My kids are happy with the products and I was happy with the service, so much so I emailed Curry's to tell them how happy I was with service.
There is not a single bit of arrogance from me today over this.
Have a good day.

Re: PS5
It actually does make a difference (a big difference), whether a TV supports HDMI 2.1 or not to the quality of it's 4K output.
I assume this is what Curry's were referring to.
Did you not know that Untinted Glasses? Perhaps research your own argument before picking a fight with someone.

Re: PS5
I own my own electronics business. If you look at my second post ( I think ) I do suggest it’s 2.1 Most new TVs now offer 2.1 as standard .jedi_master wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 12:22 pmIt actually does make a difference (a big difference), whether a TV supports HDMI 2.1 or not to the quality of it's 4K output.

I think you misunderstood his questionGodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 12:35 pmIt's probably going to boil down to console and game preferences, like it's always done.
I tend to prefer PlayStation, but I've had xboxs before.
