Those amounts are completely up in the air in the current situation. He's cautious, we all know this, so more likely he'll be considering the things that are set in stone - such as these add ons.

Our net spend last season was £5m, rising to £10m with the second payment for Jay. We're tightening our belts this season by all accounts so not hard to imagine that budget is no more than £10m this season (hence why no rumoured bids have exceeded that amount the £8m bid for Quaison, £4m for Worrall etc.). So £1m rising to £2.5m is a significant amount for us, it's not cheap.
Ok

Cannot have enough experienced players and particularly enough midfield players. A typical Dyche signing. Experienced and toughened up.

No need for a CB unless Tarky goes.

Right winger certainly needed though, but I sense SD will prefer a midfielder who can defend.

Cant believe the negativity bearing in mind our position.I am convinced SD gets an extra 10-15% extra out of players. No other PL manager can do this with low cost players. From what I see Stephens plays in front of the back four and is a bit of a "toughie". Something we have missed since Joey left.. The only real hole for me now is a No 3 ranking CH. This keeps our defense strong-which is our huge strength and something we base our results on(I am assuming Tarks is staying)). Barnesy is coming back giving great competition in attack. Will be great to have two attackers on the bench and a serious CH. Josh can go RW until JBG comes back-personally I prefer Josh there though he has filled in well for Corky

In the present circumstances, Stephens is a decent signing as a 4th central midfielder and likely to be the back up for Cork. Also allows Brownhill to play on the right when needed

We've plenty of PL experience players. What we desperately need, for the future of the club both financially and on the field, are younger players with sell on potential.

£2.5m +£30k per week for a player a team worse than us doesn't want, that is in the final year of his contract. How much of the budget is that do you reckon? What a waste.
We are short of players including one in central midfield. We are getting a player with good Premier League experience. We have young players in that position who might just be the replacements eventually.

A waste? Costing a minimal amount and could prove to be an outstanding signing.

With our budget is it minimal? Bearing in mind we only spent £5m rising to £10m last season and we're apparently worse off now?

Excellent, allows Brownhill to go wide to cover for Brady and JBG while Corky recovers.

Desperately need a CB now, regardless of Tarky going. Long can only be a 4th choice, Dunne a 5th choice. Neither good enough to be 3rd choice and potentially starting for half a season. That would see us drop for sure. But they are capable for the odd game.

Using my logic, that means if Tarky goes we need two new CBs, replacements for Gibson and Tarky. For today though, we can enjoy the relief of signing Stephens.

If we come out of this window signing 2 or 3 players who will improve our squad and not losing Pope, McNeil, Tarks or Taylor then given the well reported difficult financial circumstances we find ourselves in then most realistic fans will be pleased.

Oh...i`ll add Dyche to the list of those we don't want to lose...but unfortunately managers do not have a transfer window !!

You do realise that we still have Tarks, Pope, Taylor, McNeil on our books that cost a grand total of around £10m and our conservatively worth at least 10 times that figure now ?
I think we are pretty well covered in the category of buying players who we can or will need to sell in the future. We have done this very successfully under Dyche and Garlick which is why our net spend over the last 8 years is lower than any other Premier League club who have spent as long in the league during this period.

Its hard to think of a transfer window under Dyche where he has not brought in an experienced player - whether we have had lots (for us) to spend or very little to spend like we clearly do in this window.

Yes CT, my point was if Tarky stays we don't need an instant replacement but a younger longer-term option that can grow into the team. Worral seems to be the right age. Shame about Quaison, must be other options within our budget maybe the lad from QPR?

No issues with Stephens signing from my side. Solid PL experience at a low price and (even better) Dyche has shown, with the likes of Westwood, that he can bring even better performances out of that type of player.

Top professional and loved by every club he as played for, he will walk straight into our side.

This is far more sensible than spunking 15 million plus on a unproven 20 year old championship player, or a player from abroad. Dale is a local lad and will settle in immediately.

This has got the making of a great piece of business. Experienced premier league player, who the manager presumably believed, and presumably still Does, fits in with his system, still only 31, and potentially weakens a rival.

Not against stop gap signings in the current climate. I'd even go further and say signing a Dawson and a Snodgrass would be acceptable for this window.

But a wide player is now the priority, as JBG and Brady are currently made of glass.

Imagine signing no wide player before the deadline and then McNeill picks up an injury. We are screwed in that event.

Personally not keen on the idea of signing another over 30 player, but perhaps circumstances dictate that it's necessary.

Certainly the Brighton fans seem to be full of praise for him, so maybe we are getting a very decent player?

There's only one lot getting all het up about that clip and it's those who are desperate to pass off chucking away a big chunk of our budget on an ageing player who will be our 4th choice centre mid in a mere matter of months, never to recoup any fee, as a good signing.

Judging the signing on its own, I welcome it. It sounds like good value for a player with plenty of Premier League experience who can provide competition. However, in the wider scheme of things, I am concerned that the average age of our squad continues to creep up. A 28-year-old central midfielder out and replaced with a 31-year-old.

I assume we're finding it harder and harder to identify younger, promising players (such as Brownhill) that are available within our limited budget. However, there will come a point where Garlick is going to have to pull his finger out and make quite a few signings in one window. That's the trouble when you have so many players age 30+ in the squad at any one time. I do worry we're just kicking the can down the road and it will be problematic later.
Isn't that what the U23 signings are for, of which we've signed 5 in this window?

I think I'm one of the 'few' who were impressed with Brownhill's performances at right side midfield. He linked up well with Lowton (made him look a better player) and got into several dangerous goalscoring positions. Signing Stephens for central midfield will give us a useful option for getting the best out of Brownhill.

Good, solid signing.

I can see him slotting straight into the team, with Brownhill filling in on the right side of midfield, until that position is remedied at least

I think this is a pretty astute signing.

For me, I'd always like us to have 4 central midfielders aiming for 2 places, because if we only had 3, it means no natural central midfielder on the bench should an injury occur, and we're having to swap and change with the likes of McNeil. This then of course means we need cover to replace McNeil, and so on.

Cork, Westwood, Stephens and Brownhill. I think that's a solid midfield 4 for this coming season.
