Rishi Sunak unveils emergency jobs scheme

Well I guess the government had to do something if the current lockdown measures are going to remain in place until the spring, as always the devil will be in the detail, but it'll be welcome for many given that the furlough scheme is winding down.
It won't affect me as I'm now back at work because my period of furlough has ended, but hopefully it will help many people on this forum, to get through these tough times.

Lets hope the selfish ***** who claimed fraudulently via previous schemes there to help people decide they have been greedy enough and only those who need the help take it.

Looks a good system on the face of it.

I can’t see paying 55% of a person’s wages for 33% of their hours being that attractive to a lot of companies still using the furlough scheme. Good that they are providing support, but it’s a significant downgrade on the last few months that won’t stop many people losing their jobs.

Going to be many people now who will lose their jobs once furlough stops at the end of October.
Re: Rishi Sunak unveils emergency jobs scheme
The furlough as is cannot continue. You can’t just pay people across all business sectors to sit at home indefinitely. Just not feasible whatsoever regardless of what union types think.

Who has suggested it should be indefinitely? It’s a claim the government keep making that has zero substance to it.

Given the circumstances as fair as was possible, the unsustainable businesses before COVID need to close, that’s just the reality

Re: Rishi Sunak unveils emergency jobs scheme
that's nonsense, Boris said that in PMQs yesterday and Ian Blackford rightly put him back in his box saying him nor the leader of the opposition was asking for an indefinite solution.
The news today will be a major worry for thousands who are now likely to be made redundant just before Christmas.

Just seen a good point made on Twitter that this may encourage employers to lay off staff as it is cheaper for them to employ one person full time than two people on 33% of their hours each.
Re: Rishi Sunak unveils emergency jobs scheme
Or two people working and being paid 50%.
I'm not fully convinced this is going to have the desired impact but I'm not really sure what would be a good scheme. You've got to go with no employer subsidy to avoid this type of scenario and that bumps the cost right up (and possibly encourages keeping staff on who are never going to have a job at the end of it all).
