Halifax APP Scam
Just rec'd sms on my android: Need to verify Halifax-APP. Click here (or similar wording).
I don't bank with Halifax. I don't have Halifax mobile app on my phone. So, I've deleted the sms.
Posted just in case you or your family/friends do use Halifax bank app.
It seems there's always someone who gets scammed - otherwise these scammers wouldn't keep trying to scam people.
Stay Safe.

Always (and I stress always) treat texts, emails and phone calls etc as scams... even if you bank with the "supposed" bank, institution etc ... if they do not address you by name and include the last 4 digits of the account in the message ITS A SCAMMER ...Paul Waine wrote: ↑Mon Sep 28, 2020 5:10 pmJust rec'd sms on my android: Need to verify Halifax-APP. Re: Halifax APP Scam
I had one yesterday claiming to be from HMRC saying go via the link to calculate your tax refund.
HMRC don't do refunds via text.
Also had a call a few weeks back saying I had won the Canadian lottery, I can't even remember entering it.

My colleague got the same one yesterday. Luckily for him we actually develop parts of the Halifax/Lloyds app so it was obvious. For anybody else - you could see how it would trick many

Re: Halifax APP Scam
They're popular, I must've had at least eight or nine emails and texts purporting to be from HMRC since April; I don't recall all the senders, but I'm was pretty certain that HMRC don't do business via hotmail addresses.

HMRC scam emails ... send to phishing@hmrc.gov.gsi.uk thats what I do

I had a phone call yesterday claiming to be from HMRC and that I would be arrested if I didn’t pay my fine of £500 immediately. I told him to come round and have a word with my baseball bat...

I've had that one several times. Plus the Amazon renewal, or the £600 has been transferred abroad from you Visa or Mastercard account, you'd think the bank would know which card I owned.
And the now classic Windows technical team...

Re: Halifax APP Scam
yes, indeed. the Windows Technical Team... Oh how we've had fun with those types. I work in tech support with a varied team of people of ranging capabilities... including a part time ethical hacker (actually our Network Security chap). That time we had control of his machine was pricelessgawthorpe_view wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 8:56 amI've had that one several times. Re: Halifax APP Scam
I also had fun with a 'windows technician' wanting to fix the "virus" on my computer over the telephone.
I said if he was really from Microsoft he must have a TransWorld Automated Technician code known as a **** code for short.
Was quite amusing listening to him trying to make up a **** code for himself and even more satisfying when after he'd given me a made up code I asked him how long he'd been a **** and he replied "about 2 years"

Claims to be HMRC, but they don't have any details about me apart from my name.
Told me I owed £4k for the years 2016-19, if it goes to court I'll owe £18k
He hung up when I started asking him why he doesn't have my address or why he didn't ask me any security questions

Had them from Lloyds and TSB recently, trying something similar.
Plus some scam from '3 network' about their app.
Seems to be lots about at the mo.
It's the time to be jolly....

Re: Halifax APP Scam
There's one from (fake) DPD worth being aware of. Says you've missed a parcel delivery, follow a link to rearrange delivery and pay £4 postage. Getting lots of people pre-Christmas. Pretty clever really, albeit in a scummy way.
Re: Halifax APP Scam
One I’ve been getting recently is a text pretending to be from Royal Mail saying I’ve got a delivery from “ONLINE SELLER” on the way and with a link to track the package, but I didn’t have anything on the way and nothing ended up being delivered. With a lot of people shopping online this month it’s one to be on the lookout for as people will be expecting deliveries and might assume it’s a genuine text.

Re: Halifax APP Scam
Now and again, when I have a bit of time on my hands if I get a call from the one where they say you had a car accident that wasn't your fault recently, after a bit of foreplay. I say "Funnily enough yes I did" You then get put through to the real Top Line scam artist who asks you for the details. I then tell them that I was driving home from the pub after having sunk about 10 pints but I can't really remember how many and having had a couple of lines of coke in the bog when I collided with another vehicle killing all the occupants, but I swear they were driving on the wrong side of the road and my court case is due soon so what can they do to help.
At some point they hang up but my rationale is if I can use use up enough of their time it gives them less opportunity to nobble somebody else and I am performing a public service.
With the Microsoft one I tell them the computer is upstairs as my phone isn't portable and I'll have to go and have a look and leave them dangling on the line for a couple of minutes and see how many times I can get them to hold the line while I check my screen.

Re: Halifax APP Scam
I regularly get a call from my credit card provider telling me that a large overseas payment has just been made on my card and to press 1 on my handset to check on it. I never press 1 and usually sing a bar from "Alice's Restaurant" (Arlo Guthrie) to the handset before they get the message and hang up. A good whistle by the phone is also handy. Give it a good blast close to the handset and it will make sure the tw@t on the other end gets the message, direct to their eardrum.

Re: Halifax APP Scam
There are so many scams and phishing attempts being made at present that it is safer to assume EVERYTHING is a scam.
And, if you're not convinced, simply send your Bank Account details to:

Re: Halifax APP Scam
The one I'm getting a lot this last fortnight is an email telling me my Norton subscription (which I dont have - nor ever had) is coming to an end but I can press the link to continue protecting my computer (which will be under great threat otherwise etc). Quite a few variations on this coming from different sources.

Re: Halifax APP Scam
Received this email on Tuesday.
Looks very convincing.
I was actually waiting for a delivery from Amazon that day.
Looked on my Amazon account to check and saw that it was still out for delivery and actually being delivered by Amazon themselves.
I work from home and my 'office' overlooks the front of my house. Nobody had been to deliver anything at the time in the email - my postie usually arrives around 1pm.
Just to add, the email arrived 5 minutes after the time stated in the attachment

Re: Halifax APP Scam
So the latest scam is a mobile number ringing me, I answer it to get an automated message telling me that due to fraudulent transactions, they're going to cancel my national insurance number
Press 1 for more information, which connects you to some bloke from in or around India.
Asks for your name, I gave him my brothers, and that's it no other info.
He then starts waffling on about cancelling my NI number, which I've never given him.
I stopped him there and told him that he cannot cancel it no one can.
He hung up eventually, but didn't swear at me this time.
