Not one for the first eleven granted. But the fact we are even considering looking abroad has to be viewed as a step in the right direction!

I am sure even in france they have good characters!

Anthony Gomez Mancini? He's not even a proper Frenchman: his first name is English, Gomez is Spanish and Mancini is Italian. I don't trust him at all!

Seems like has a good pedigree, just hope this isn’t another one after 2/3 yrs we just release, that’s if we make the move a permanent one!

LTL is saying it's 2 to 3 mill for him......

Still we could use him as a Championship midfielder in less than 12 months

Look on the bright side, we just dodged the signing of a left footed player whose best position was arguably as a free role attacking midfielder. The fact that he didn't appear to be a very good fit for our first team might have played a part in that decision.

And now we have signed a left footed attacking midfielder on loan of the U23 side.

As I said on the other thread, I watched quite a bit of Angers last season, but I don't know anything about him at all. He might turn out to be a good signing for us. The worst case scenario is that he doesn't work out and we can send him back instead of permanently signing him for the reputed £2-3m that the rumour mill has thrown up.

Given our limited finances it seems like another strange move for us to be making, but our U23 squad has been severely depleted by players being moved on in the last 2 years.

I could be wrong on the buy option amount, take it with a pinch of salt, as always the figure was undisclosed.

Our recruitment seems considerably better at youth team/u23 levels, almost like the first team don’t have the same scouting network somehow

Rigg's technical director, Martin Hodge is chief scout but the chairman gets heavily involved.

Is that why our recruitment for more important things like the first team and staying in the EPL is currently looking like a joke ?

Last year he bought in Joel Senior ( left the club after one season ), Joel Mumbongo ( injured before he arrived, injured when he came, missed most of the season through injury ) and Adam Phillips ( went out on loan, signed an extension and immediately went back out on loan to run it down ).

The jury is out on this years intake.

We probably spotted Mancini while we were looking at Santamaria ( who was an unrealistic target ), because I believe he was involved in their pre-season build up quite a bit. I don't think that counts as a full discovery. It would have been better and put us in a more advantageous position if he had spent more time concentrating on what the first team needs.

It seems curious that he picked out this bloke after saying " we won't be signing players from around the world and ignoring the players under our noses ". We could have or maybe we still could sign domestic talent like Matt O'Riley and Andre Green - we missed out on Danny Loader.

Don't sack Rigg for his first team recruitment performance, give him a pay rise for signing us some U23 players that might work out.

If that is the argument for the defence it is a poor one. He isn't our U23 scout he is our Technical Director and that role encompasses far more than concentrating his time on the U23 squad - which he has depleted with out goings.

Hopefully, this young guy will prove to be a solid acquisition, but it smacks of too little too late after what has to be one of the worst transfer windows in the clubs history.

Seems a bit of a strange management tree?

Chairman
Rigg
Hodge
UK / European / Americas / Asia Scouts

Looks to me like an extra management line for nowt.

Dyche should also be in there but I suppose his direct reporting line would be to the chairman?

Let him think Santamaria was an unrealistic target because there was a point when we were close to getting him. And the fact that he's moved to Freiburg should suggest it wasn't unrealistic.

Mike Rigg telling us in his own words what his role at the club is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q4-6pVaNAI

What if the Gaffer wants players to be given new contracts ?

What if Covid hits and it has an impact on our finances ?

Dan Ashworth, current Technical Director at Brighton who Rigg worked with at the FA, on what he believe the role of a Technical to be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X7ElEXFKiE

Does Dyche fit the direction of travel that Rigg wants to take us in ?

What is a Director of Football ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMVdrGbZkGo

The role of a Technical Director is NOT limited to concentrating on the U23 squad. A Technical Director is directly responsible for recruitment at every level of the club, over seeing the Sports Science department and leadership of the Academy.

His or her main role is protecting the club and putting in place a long term strategic plan that will unify all areas of the club and result in forward progression by balancing the playing demands we need to satisfy with the financial assets we have at our disposal.

Not really, I did say full discovery. A full discovery that is in line with an analytical model would be looking at the stats, identifying a player and then going to watch them. Like we possibly did with Santamaria, although he would represent a well known player that most recruitment departments would have been aware of without in depth number crunching.

If, while watching a deliberately targeted player, a scout also notices another player ( hitherto unknown ) that still counts as a discovery, but I would say that it is more akin to " a lucky and unexpected find ", not a full discovery.

That does mean then that the Chairman is in charge of who we sign, seems a very classical model.

On the face it, it appears then that Chairman has little trust in those involved in the “football” side of the club. All business then (football or commercial) is controlled by the Chairman.

I suppose it stops money being potentially wasted but leaves little scope for the manager and recruitment team.

And you don't see that as a problem ?

We know what the role of everybody else is at the club.

How about this one

https://trainingground.guru/articles/ri ... of-burnley

or this one

https://trainingground.guru/articles/bu ... l-director

or his duties at all of his previous clubs in the capacity of Technical Director as a comparison.

If his primary focus was on recruitment for the U23 squad his job title would be Head Of Recruitment for the U23's.

The clue to what he does is in his job title.

Reported on the Angers site as follows

Born in Saint-Priest, 19 years old, Angers SCO midfielder Anthony Gomez leaves Maine-et-Loire today for Premier League club Burnley, in the form of a loan that could lead to a transfer final.

Arrived in 2018 from the reserve team of Olympique Lyonnais, the French U19 International Anthony Gomez has been a reinforcement of choice for the N2 of Angers SCO and has always, through his dedication, demonstrated his desire to progress . The Club are proud to see him join the Premier League.

Anthony, Angers SCO wish you the best in Burnley.

I believe Riyad Mahrez was spotted by Leicester when they were looking at somebody else in the French second division.

I'm not saying this lad will be as good.

I believe Riyad Mahrez was spotted by Leicester when they were looking at somebody else in the French second division.

I'm not saying this lad will be as good.
Back in 1950 we went to watch a centre forward playing in the Irish League. I can't recall his name now but we didn't sign him. However, we were impressed with one of the inside forwards who we did sign. I think he did OK for us too, called Jimmy McIlroy.

I didn't know that. It's amazing he wasn't on anybody's radar considering how good he was.

He was young and had not played many games, scouting and player knowledge then would have been unbelievably limited. We'd had a tip about this centre forward who obviously didn't impress but saw this young inside forward playing.

Not trying to belittle you in any way. Thought it was common knowledge we went there scouting another player and came back with Jimmy Mac?
My Dad used to make it quite a jocular reference to it. 'We didn't even go there to look at him'.

You either know or you don't and probably most people don't.
