Why don't we ever hear from the chairman?

Apologies if I'm jumping the gun, but can someone explain why there never appears to be anything resembling a statement or explanation from our chairman regarding our finances (or lack of)?

If there was some sort of indication to the fans, as to why we're unlikely to be making a key signing this window, then at least we'd have a better understanding of the situation and we could debate it accordingly.

By saying nothing, it only fuels resentment and cynicism, and thus brings out the more outlandish statements from certain posters.

It's not a lot to ask, is it?

One explanation could be that he employs someone to do that, namely the chief exec. You tend not to hear from owners really but the paid hand at most clubs. It's never Lewis but Levy at Spurs for example or Woodward not a Glazer at Man U.

It doesn't make it right, though.

They should communicate with us better. But they have their toes in other waters so it's often not their main concern.

I get that, but it's not like we're bombarded with information from him either.

Just a statement explaining the financial situation and where we're at in terms of our transfer policy/network would be helpful.

We had a Chief Exec previously but we seemed to hear more from Mr Garlick than we did from Mr Baldwin . I certainly recall end of season "catch ups " with Darren Bentley when the Chairman was only too happy to talk about the club's finances

That's what I think the OP is on about.

Its a very valid question of the OP.After all the customers of any company or organinisation are KING. We promote this one club family mentality thats meant to set us apart from the big consortium owned clubs in the PL. Sadly we don't behave like one., and we have the personnel in place to both identify and action this and there is a major lack of transparency and forward planning at times like these.

I dont know if anyone feels like me at present, but I have never felt so disengaged with a club I have followed and loved since 1962. And I liken this transfer window to watching a close member of your family dying, but they are denied any medical assistance

It comes down to -Do they care about the fans?. Do they value the fans? There has never been a stronger argument for keeping the companies life blood informed

SD stated that the club policy was to sell first and buy second.

The fact that we haven't sold anyone to raise the required funds means that significant signings are out of financial reach.

SD wanted to retain the players that he had and so I suppose chose the path he wanted to go down.

You probably hear from any chairman once year at the absolute best. Normally around April time when the new Financial Year is among us and you’re told the company has had a difficult year yet again and that they’re in the same boat as us.

More often than not it’s the CEO who gets delegated this task.

Communication at all levels at BFC is poor at best.

SD did say that we were in a financial position where we didn't need to sell players but then later said, when asked about incoming transfers, that the club policy was to SELL first and BUY second.

All of our key players who would command a sizeable fee are still here.

In times like the present, I think we need the man at the top being more prominent and forthcoming. It's like the Pandemic, rightly or wrongly you can gauge the feel better if Boris speaks to the nation. Sorry for the analogy.

Its one area where I've found Garlick left wanting. You can't get him away from TV and media when things are rosey, however his communication when things aren't going so well has always left a lot to be desired (a Pete Winkleman lite in this area imo)

We are in the midst of a pandemic, football clubs have been hard hit by the closure of grounds to spectators and have lost all match day income. Added to that is the threat of some of the TV income having to be repaid at some point. Burnley, unlike most other clubs in the PL and many in the Championship, have no multi-millionaire investors with deep pockets to plough money in when the going gets tough. In that respect Burnley are like many clubs in Leagues 1 and 2 who are financed by local businessmen. They are wealthy but not billionaires. Clubs in Leagues 1 and 2 are asking for a bailout to stop them going bust.

Hi fidel, Mike Garlick made a statement in April when the accounts were published for the financial year to 30-Jun-2019. MG forecasted that, if the 2019/20 season wasn't completed, it would cost Burnley £50 million. Of course, since then, the remaining 9 games were played - but with no fans. Cuts in tv income have also been discussed with Sky/BT deals rebates, but not for last season. Alongside that Chinese deal (the largest of overseas deals) has been cancelled with £160 million unpaid. In recent weeks, we've learnt that fans aren't returning to grounds any time soon - so, more reductions in tv income, I'd expect.

If the Reuters report (23 Sept) about potential new investor in the club has any basis, I wouldn't expect Mike Garlick/any club officials to make a statement about finances until the ALK Capital activity has either (a) progressed or (b) gone away.

Thinking about other clubs, whether they have been spending this window or not, how many of those have had Chairman or anyone else come out and said "we have got £X million to spend" or "no money to spend" or anything in between?

Of course, Sean Dyche is asked at every press conference - and, in one way or another, he aims to deflect or say "nothing is happening" or "we are interested in Messi." I think we are used to Sean Dyche's approach to aim to use humour to distract from his policy of "not speaking about other clubs' players."

You never know, posters demanding an "explanation" or whatever from the chairman - God knows why he should - might not like what they hear.
The penny will drop eventually and the reality you've outlined, kenton, might actually sink in.

That doesn't explain why we've ended up in a position where we have the oldest squad in the Premier League, 13 players in the final year of their contracts or no cover in key positions on the right wing or central defence. This neglect of the first team squad has been going on for several years and the current situation has brought it to a head. Garlick has steered us into a right mess.
