Let’s all calm down. The championship was always going to be our target market for any new signings. Did anyone really expect us to buy a current premier league player? We have two weeks to strengthen and no games in that time. Players coming back from injury as well. We will be OK. 👍

How many of the Premier League clubs are small towns?

In terms of fan base size, we are probably a Championship team but the players, manager and support staff, board and owners, have given us 5 years in the PL. A huge achievement!

We can go on but only if we are all united. I understand your hopes of major signings and massive budgets. But that was never going to happen.

It’s time for all to dig deep, grow some huge ********, and fight on. Despite the poor start to this season, we are quite capable of finishing mid table. UTC!

It's pointless asking the fans to be united when the manager and the chairman aren't even united.

How Burnley is ran currently is the only alternative.

All of the aforementioned clubs relied on their owners to dig deep into their own pockets.
When the funding stopped the problems began.

Burnley relies on its normal income, hence no debt, no bank overdraft, no loans from directors or otherwise.

That’s just nonsense.

There isn’t one person that hopes for failure.

There isn’t one person that wants us to spend so ridiculously that we risk the future of the club.

Some wheeling and dealing, imagination, expansion of the market that we shop in, perhaps a little risk, identifying players of a good age (with potential resale value) and getting a few deals over the line.

That is NOT hoping for failure or risking the future of the club.

Hi Kenton, apologies, I feel the need to be pedantic this evening. Mike G and John B are both locally born and raised businessmen. They are both Burnley fans. Both their businesses are worth tens of millions. However, their respective businesses are multinational rather than local.

The challenge is that they aren't billionaires - and that seems to be the going rate for football club ownership these days.

That may be true. But there are clearly an awful lot of people who don’t have the most basic grasp of the club’s financial position. So without spending ridiculously, how do we spend money that we don’t have? I’d love someone to actually provide an answer to that.

Let’s hope we can strengthen the right hand side of the pitch and central defence ( if Mee is out for a while) from elsewhere. Why did we pull out of Wilson ? It’s sounds like we didn’t fancy him anymore and it wasn’t about the fee in the end ? A bit of strengthening and not betting the ranch and most fans would be happy enough.

I am disappointed but it really looks, as like ITV Digital, Covid has really knocked us back. We cannot carry on punching above our weight. Most of the Prem money has been spent and for me the last 12 years will have seen us spend 7 at the top table and if this is the last season in this league so be it. Those from OC onwards who along with BK and other Board members and the present chairman as well as SD EH and even BL (gave us Deanno) deserve my thanks for a dream I never expected to come true. Very likely a sad 2020-21 season with wholesale changes to come-but we have had a good attempt at it and maybe if we go down we may get back with some of the youngsters who are coming through.

We have no money, zero?

We’ve lost a number of high earners from the wage bill. Does that not free up money for loans or indeed signings, considering the fees are not paid in full, immediately?

I don’t know how much money we have. Mike Garlick has access to the clubs bank statements and he also has access to the club’s financial forecast which will factor in a worst case scenario income projection due to Covid. If he’s not spending any money I think it’s fair to say we don’t have very much, and he’s making sure that the little we do have is enough to get us through the current situation.

That’s why I think the people lambasting him (and I’m not including you in this) can’t be taken seriously. Because they don’t know what financial position the club is in.

Some transfer fees are paid in full immediately.
In this current environment I'd suspect more clubs will want more upfront, something that's been alluded on the money tree thread.

There are the implications of an increased risk of relegation though.

I appreciate it’s a balancing act, particularly during rather uncertain times, but must admit that I think the scales have been weighted too heavily in favour of short term prudence.

If it had been a normal season and year then we wouldn't be having these discussions because the money in the bank would be getting used on transfers.

The club doesn't aim for short term prudence, the aim is to finish in the black regularly and the fact that we have done has meant we had spare money to help keep the club afloat during this pandemic.

I’d argue that the aim this season is short term prudence, with a gamble on us being able to stay up. Quite a gamble with a paper thin squad and potentially a far bigger impact if we do go down.
