Sounds like the Welsh want to setup border controls to prevent the Scousers from crossing the border and getting on the lash in Rhyl because travel will be a guideline only and we know how well we have done following guidelines.

This. Schools are essential and pubs aren’t. Pub and restaurant owners are making great efforts on the whole but it’s the thickos who don’t understand the 2 metre rule when they are sober let alone after having a few. You need a mask when in a shop but not in a pub when you are eating and drinking and talking and the virus is airborne. Right ok then.
Imagine people reactions if they said “You can go to the pub and restaurants but you can’t take iff your mask”. “You are allowed to fly, but must wear a mask. You must not eat or drink anything from leaving your home until you have landed and followed local rules at your destination”.

Why do people have to constantly try to pick holes in every single rule?

Understandable really. If they go into Wales, can we stop them from coming back please.

I have a question about the number of positive tests in universities.

In September, few students were tested. Tests were by and large only for those with symptoms, and very few students had or have symptoms.

In October, loads of students are being tested regardless of whether they have symptoms, and they are finding loads of asymptomatic positives.

So how much of the increase in positives caused by the increase in testing, and how much is actual new cases?

Just to expand, the latest New Scientist random testing suggests that 1 in 170 people had coronavirus in the period18th September to 5th October. There are about 1.9m full time students in the UK, so it's reckoned that about (on average) 11,000 of them would have the virus before they went back to university. Is the upsurge in university student positive cases because they are discovering cases that already existed but didn't know about, or is it a genuine rise in new cases?

Seems strange that Nottingham have the highest cases, yet they are in Tier 2 and not Tier 3 with Liverpool.

Guess over the next 2 weeks, you'd expect more places to go into Tier 3, when hospital admissions catch up.

...which is driven by the fact that the outbreak is massively skewed to the 18-22 year old group i e students who don't, in general, end up in a bad way with covid. Three- quarters of cases in Nottm are in this age group.

I hope I'm not being naively optimistic but I don't expect that to happen here in Nottm. Covid rates amongst the local population have remained low and once the disease has ripped through the students I'd expect to see an equally dramatic reduction in rates here.

Liverpool is days away from having to cancel other procedures as covid accounts for 20% of admissions...

In the north east,if you remove students, the rate is falling, so same could happen in notts.

Had had conversation with my Grandad today who’s in his mid 80’s, he said he’s isolated for 6 months, see’s no end in sight, nobody visits him, he can’t go round to his neighbours, nobody stops for a chat at the gym anymore. He basically doesn’t see this as living and he’s not bothered about being around anymore, it’s sad to hear him speak like that and I imagine there’s hundreds of thousands in the same boat.

He said he will continue to follow the rules to ‘keep safe’ but it’s sad to think the few years he’s got left he will spend miserable.

So in tier 2.
Pubs are open, but I am guessing that because households can only mix outdoors, pubs without beer gardens(with umbrellas and heaters!) will be empty?
I am guessing landlords it would have been better to be tier 3? At least if forced to close they could get furlough payments for staff

Possible way out of this mess:

Purposely infect all 18-23 year olds with a very low dose of the virus then lock them all down for 2 weeks.

Pubs will be selling sandwiches for 25p and claim they are providing food and can therefore serve alcohol.

That doesn’t seem to tie in with what the Mayor has said this afternoon unless he’s changed his view?

When in tier 3, restaurants can stay open but can’t serve alcohol. So that wouldn’t be possible.
However, we are in tier 2 so pubs can remain open. However, as you can’t mix with people outside your household in an indoor setting. I am guessing most pubs will be extremely quiet!

If you order a substantial meal then you can order alcohol.

How expensive or difficult to make can egg and chips be or pie and peas?

Otherwise you can rent a room in a pub with accomodation for a few quid and order the beer as room service.

And then seek help if you’re that desperate to have a pint on pub premises when you can sit in a room at home and have a drink instead!

But it could be pointed out that, because they previously did not serve substantial meals, then they are trying to circumvent the rules put in place and would probably be closed anyway.

Don’t you also need to have some sort of approval from the relevant authority to start serving food? Given that the Food Standards people can close a place down I’d assume you’d have to have approval for opening a new food service.

I would assume so...they would have to have kitchens checked, H&S checks etc...a lengthy process.

In Malta, bars were able to stay open even if they just served snacks, even a bag of crisps. I do find it strange though that Liverpool is the only area in Tier 3...the hospitals up here in the North East are filling up at quite a rate, not as quick as Liverpool, but enough....

New Covid restrictions explained:

Tier 1
Whatever you're doing, you are doing it wrong, but keep doing it

Tier 2
You are doing it wrong, stop doing that and start doing other things wrong instead

Tier 3
You are doing it wrong, please retrain as a ballet dancer

Rather than looking for loopholes and excuses you could look at the issues around infection rates etc and think “you know what, I might give the pub a miss tonight”

Seems pretty simple. You just need to work out which of the three tiers you and each member of your bubble fit into, then divide the total by the first number in your post code, and then retrain for a job at your local Wetherspoons or Pret A Manger.
