The squares you mention would be classed as an "Agora" in Greek (Agora = Open public space for meetings/markets etc etc) .....

Like you say to call them a "square" is pushing it a tad ...

Although I wouldn't call either one disappointing Wenceslas Square is great and Times Square is just well Times Square, and both are iconic in their own ways

To return to the square, most likely it will have been somebody sitting under a tree with a twig and breaking it in half with some bark not quite tearing off to form a hinge and then (like the almost mirror nature common in creatures), the process was done again to form four pieces.

If one joins one's thumbs and forefingers it almost forms a square... And then moving that hand-square-hole around to view it from different angles geometry revealed its laws, hand-as-the-computer, in effect.

The joined thumbs and forefingers ring is almost a square-circle.

Like the cave paintings, it's likely somebody drew that square-circle using the hand as a template and then repeating the shape to form patterns, perhaps a nervous diversion whilst tapping out a problem, who knows...

If one stretches the fingers and thumbs, it forms the ideal design for a sailing boat.
