When the ancient Greeks..
When the ancient Greeks..
When the Ancient Greeks worked out the nature of what constitutes a square, they concluded that it is a 2D shape with four sides of equal length with an angle of 90 degrees in each corner.
Good circumspection.
Typical from an Oceanic sailing nation.
'Mmmm... We will reserve our judgement but never-the-less consider it in terms of phenomena recognition.'
North of England values also. (values???????)
... Values that chime with the advancement of the Western Enlightenment.
"Northern values? Yeah and then get the b**t***."

There isn't a Pstotto, tim.
It's a computer program but typed in by hand.

Re: When the ancient Greeks..
Did the Greeks actually call it a square or is that just some English word to describe the shape.I suggest the word is often taken out of context Wenceslas Square and Times Square are totally the wrong shape and both very disappointing.

Re: When the ancient Greeks..
As is Marsden square in Haslingden.
Re: When the ancient Greeks..
The squares you mention would be classed as an "Agora" in Greek (Agora = Open public space for meetings/markets etc etc) .....
Like you say to call them a "square" is pushing it a tad ...
Although I wouldn't call either one disappointing Wenceslas Square is great and Times Square is just well Times Square, and both are iconic in their own ways
Re: When the ancient Greeks..
It's a bit like transcendental meditation... From India, when 'transcendental' is not an Indian word?
Buddhists and Hindus (presented in the UK by extremist cults) attack one's nature with nothing but pre-emptive chiding by deriding 'ego' and yet that word and its current connotation have no history in Asia.

Re: When the ancient Greeks..
To return to the square, most likely it will have been somebody sitting under a tree with a twig and breaking it in half with some bark not quite tearing off to form a hinge and then (like the almost mirror nature common in creatures), the process was done again to form four pieces.
If one joins one's thumbs and forefingers it almost forms a square... And then moving that hand-square-hole around to view it from different angles geometry revealed its laws, hand-as-the-computer, in effect.

Re: When the ancient Greeks..
Circles are more interesting than squares IMO though I dont wish to be labeled as squarist and cancelled.
Much better for making wheels for starters.

Re: When the ancient Greeks..
The joined thumbs and forefingers ring is almost a square-circle.
Like the cave paintings, it's likely somebody drew that square-circle using the hand as a template and then repeating the shape to form patterns, perhaps a nervous diversion whilst tapping out a problem, who knows...
If one stretches the fingers and thumbs, it forms the ideal design for a sailing boat.

Re: When the ancient Greeks..
Not quite right about Indian philosophy having no concept of 'ego', Pstotto. They refer to it as ahaṁkāra, or sometimes asmitā, and it is said to be one of the main elements of our mental factulties.
Re: When the ancient Greeks..
... And that main element of the mental faculty is not to be fixated upon and derided.
Re: When the ancient Greeks..
That's why the Ancient Greeks were better.

Culminating with the Western Enlightenment and intellectual skepticism.

Squaring the circle is impossible but you could always circle the square, a bit like Sitting Bull did with Custer.

Wouldn't a 2D shape with four sides of equal length with an angle of 90 degrees in one corner cover it, given how minimalistic the Ancient Greeks could be.

Brain damaged is currently having his dinner, after deciding to delay suicide.
Goundhog Day for over 30 years... I can't go on, I'll go on and fail better... Or succeed.
Anyway, Mary Berry didn't want to s**k my **** whilst making her casserole on TV just now and with it being a flat screen TV, I'm not expecting a pool ball to break it anytime soon and the player at the other side asking for it back.
And when it gets to that...
