Sky/BT Sports Box Office

Post by FactualFrank » Sat Oct 17, 2020 8:14 pm

Soon to be cancelling my Sky Sports subscription completely as worked out it's not worth it.

Has anybody else cancelled?

Sky used to be so far ahead of other broadcasters it was untrue.
It's a shadow of it's former self.

Got rid about 3 years ago, my Mrs payed the Sky bill, I barely watch footy, only the boxing & cricket really. Don’t miss it as I stream it if I want to watch it.

We watch maybe 1.5hrs of tv a day so dont need sky as we have Netflix for the kids . Saves about 1500 a year

I recently cancelled my BT subscription when they increased it by 57%. The TV companies are gradually pricing themselves out.

But would you cancel now the Box Office has come in?

They are taking the p1ss. What would normally come with my Sky package is now £30 a week extra for 2 games.

That's an extra £1500 a year.

But a lot of the games which are now costing £14.95 wouldn't be being televised orherwise! And you don't need to watch them all. And PL football isn't played 50 weeks of the year.

Not sure it deserved an exclamation mark, but what you're saying is that they are playing extra games? So the games that I'd normally get will be shown anyway?

The problem is, one of my TVs uses Magic Eye from the Sky box. And only one of my TVs is worth a carrot - the other one would blow up if I even mentioned the word download.

You can't just say that without recommendations. The thing is, this TV is in the corner of my bedroom and it's perfect in size (she said). A bigger TV wouldn't be better as I'd struggle to walk past the bed (again, she said).

I paid a grand for the TV in the lounge, and that was 6 years ago. Something the same size would just be a pain (she...)

Why are you blaming Sky and BT for the PPV situation. It is the clubs that demanded this and set the pricing. All Sky are using is their Box Office platform in order to facilitate showing the requested games that were not originally part of the Sky Sports package

I originally thought they were replacing games with the Box Office - if they are adding extra games, then that's fair enough.

The Premier League set the pricing, not the clubs.

Apologies, but my point still stands, you can't lay the blame at the foot of the broadcasters

What I'm saying is that without the PPV coverage, games such as West Brom v Burnley would very probably not have been covered by Sky or BT but now all games are available, but some have to be payed for. No, I'm not saying they are -laying extra games but your figures would indicate that as you quoted there were 2 PPV games per week over 50 weeks, which is not the case.

*Paid.

I'm still not sure if you're agreeing with me or not.

So you're not saying they are (putting extra games on), but you are saying they they are laying extra games.

The games on box office wouldn’t normally come with your Sky package. They wouldn’t normally be televised but there is an option to watch them on a pay per view basis.

They seem to be also showing Saturday 3pm kickoffs, I've noticed.

It has reminded me to give them a call. £102 a month for what seems to be a £50-60 package.

Let's be honest, sky sports is only worth having if you either watch every game that's on or you follow the teams that are shown the most.

The number of available streams out there means having sky sports is fairly pointless as a Burnley fan.

I watch the Darts, so it adds a bit of value to what I pay for.

Then again, I don't watch cricket or American sports, so the majority I miss.

I pay £58 a month for full Sky TV package (inc Sports/Cinema) - minus the kids channel and that includes netflix.

I have considered and used alternatives and for the timebeing -I can't see Sky being beaten on overall package.

Works out less than £2 a day for something that is probably watched a a good 3-5hrs on an evening and more at the weekend now we cant get out as much

Depending how long you've been with them, they add all your VIP points together to give you a discount.

Last few times I called them I seem to recall that I did it early on a weekend sat/sunday (8-9am) and I find that I have rarely waited for a length of time.

Frank - What I'm saying is in response to you quoting the cost as £1500 (2 games per week over 50 weeks) and I'm saying that that wouldn't be the cost as there aren't games taking place over 50 weeks and also that you don't have to watch 2 PPV games every week.

I'm paying almost double that. I just need to be arsed to call them up.
Does yours also cover broadband and land-line?

Depending how long you've been with them, they add all your VIP points together to give you a discount.
I've been with them since the 90s.

Just looked at the update - I'll admit, I don't look at it, they just take it out. I moved from Sky broadband to TalkTalk. It was well over £100 but now seems to be £72.xx

That's the main package with Sky Sports and Sky Cinema. No broadband.

The games on box office wouldn’t normally come with your Sky package. They wouldn’t normally be televised but there is an option to watch them on a pay per view basis.
Exactly.

On a month-to-month contract? Not sure it does. I was paying just over £40 initially. They threw the Sports in.

There doesn't seem to a standard price and that's why it's difficult to compare. I pay £93 for Sky, Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, BT Sport, Broadband and land-line. That will be higher and lower than others with the same package.

A tip for you.....go to the website and look at the packages on there....then mention that specific package and go from there.
