Nevermind the footy..take a look at the Rugby results. Incredibly low scoring games. Have to presume the scoring system has changed?

Was the weather bad in London that w/end? Games at Arsenal, Chelsea (div 1) and Charlton, L.Orient (div 2) all postponed.
Did bad weather impact on attendances at the other games, also?
Good to see Coates and Irvine on the score sheet.

Re: Results on 20th March 1965
In 1965, a try was worth 3 points, it went to 4 points in 1971, and to 5 points in 1992 ...Somethingfishy wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2020 6:46 pmNevermind the footy..take a look at the Rugby results. Incredibly low scoring games. Have to presume the scoring system has changed?
However, the biggest change came in 1968-69, when the " Australian dispensation " rule came in. Prior to that, if you kicked direct to touch from anywhere on the field, the line-out was held where the ball crossed the touch-line. The new rule limited that to kicks from inside the 22 metre line, unless they bounced in play first ... A major cause for this change came in the Scotland v Wales game in 1963, on a filthy day, where there were 111 lineouts !!!
It looks like 20th March 1965 was a bad weather day, add in the state of pitches then as well as the fact the balls were just leather then, no rubberised dimples/grips etc and 3 points for a try, and you can see why scores of 3-3, 3-6 and 0-3 were happening ...

Interesting how things change over time. You don't often see the half time score in brackets these days but we now get the actual time of the goals associated with each scorer. I presume it was harder to put all that type of data together in those days.

They used to make up most of the half times scores in those days for the newspapers so I wouldnt take too much notice of them

Ernie Hunt was one of the two players involved in the infamous free kick(Willie Carr was the other) scored by Coventry in 70/71 against Everton I think. Flicking the ball up to be volleyed by another player was outlawed soon after.claretfern wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2020 10:46 pmI watched the same docu.

Just checked it out. It was called "6 days to Saturday" and is on YouTube.
Set in 1963. Bert Head was the Manager. It features a young Don Rogers.
A good watch for those who like a bit of nostalgia.

Re: Results on 20th March 1965
I was at Twickenham to see the rugby international. Andy Hancock scored a try in the last minute to get a draw. It was a great try but an awful match in awful weather. I was a student in London at the time and got two tickets from the Calder Vale rugby club via a neighbour who was on the committee. I took my girl friend to the match who was frozen and wet through but she married me eventually!
I think that was the last rugby international I saw.
