It's hard to compare the greatest of all time, the game is different.

Messi and Ronaldo are obviously the best players given the support, facilities and specialists around them. Millions of pounds are spent on them every year to keep them at their best - they are 100 times fitter with much more technical ability. In 50 years time though, there will be somebody even better than them two...

Maradona on the other-hand was just something else. Pure, raw talent. The only people supporting him was the mafia.

Probably fair enough. Those polls are useless without the ages of the voters. There’s nothing worse than when an ex player comes on tv and says “Pele is the greatest”. Really? He stopped playing when you were 6 how could you possibly know that?

I’m sure there were brilliant players in the 1910s - 1940s. But nobody speaks about them because all those that watched them are no longer with us and footage is extremely rare.

It was mentioned on Radio 5 last night (I cant remember who said it though) that Messi and Ronaldo play on carpets of grass, whereas Maradona and Pele had to overcome various qualities of playing surfaces and were still brilliant. That's not to say that Messi and Ronaldo wouldn't be able to on the crap stuff, but we know for sure that Maradona and Pele on current pitches would shine above all others.

Just watched the start of the West Brom v Sheff U game, first bit of footy I have seen for a week. Why have they had a minutes applause for Maradona? I dont recall him playing for either team, or any other Englush team tbh. I get the reaction in Argentina, maybe also Italy, but in England? Fookin daft.

He was a wonderful footballer. Such a shame we didn’t see him for long enough and such a shame he never got the opportunity to play in a World Cup. Never really played well against us but he was a special player.

I think exactly that. As I’ve said on this thread. Great player who I admired. But did think that was a little strange today. Granted he was possibly the best player that ever lived. But then at the city game during the applause they then showed his goal against England. Did think it was a little strange.

I thought it was great tbh. Football rivalries and all that are really nonsense when it comes to this type of thing. We all (mostly) watch football because we enjoy it. Sure we support Burnley and we want Burnley to win. But a lot of fans at most clubs are genuine football fans. When one of the greatest ever football players passes away, why shouldn’t they be a minute silence? Sure he had faults, made mistakes, cheated in fact. But he showed the world how football could be played and how it should be played. Football has become too tribal over the years. People get far too into where there from, who they support, who and what we’re not supposed to like. You can see on social media this week just how many football clubs thanked him and said goodbye in their own way. So when a man passes away who reached the very pinnacle of his chosen sport then yes, it’s absolutely the right thing to do. It’s incredible how many lives he touched and hope he gave, especially to the people of Argentina. Look at the response from the Argentinians, can you imagine that here for a player? He came from **** hole and reached the top. There’s reasons why people like him will be remembered forever, he made people believe, he made people dream and that to me is what football is about. Making people dream.

I get that and don’t disagree with anything you say. I just think the minutes silences and applauses will end up devalued and even every week if we end up doing them for players unrelated to the club / country. I get maradonna was one on his own. But there wasn’t one for Eusebio for example. Or lev yashin. Or di Stefano. For example.

If Shane Warne died we would have all sorts of programs on him, we'd pay respect at games and rerun loads on incidents and games where he ripped us apart and was at his best.

We are a great sporting nation who respect the world greats and the battles we have had with them.

Maradonna's life story is amazing and intriguing for lots of good and bad reasons and you only have to see the documentary's that people like Lineker and that England team have been involved in all because that game was such a relevant moment in English football culture

Who gives a sh*t how other country's would treat the death of some of our sporting stars but I bet my life there are examples where English sportman have had such an impact on another country (be it good or bad but through some form of greatness) that they do the same kind of thing we are doing for Maradonna.

I also bet that when Pele dies we do the same thing and show his greatness even when we were the victims and the same goes for players like Cruyff.

If you have a problem with Maradonna for his actions and lifestyle either within and outside of football then thats fair enough and just tune out and dont get involved but there is a lot of football fans who see Maradonna at the very least in the top 3 of all time for the game they love and also there is plenty on forums like this who were of a certain age when Maradonna was at his peak so that it really resonates.

The recent film of his life is absolutely fascinating and whilst I dont condone or excuse the bad he has done to see where he came from and what he achieved and how his life got destroyed this guy for me is a real superstar and I say that as a passionate music fan who accepts that most of the geniuses have their flaws and demons but doesn't take away from the impact they had on peoples lives at the heights of their careers

Yes well said DA. Watched the documentary Lineker did with him last night and I must admit, I did change my opinion of him to a certain degree afterwards. Yes he cheated with the infamous goal against us and sadly succumbed to drugs but he turned his life around for the better in his latter days. An absolute genius of a footballer along with Pele in my lifetime and the way he is revered in his own country is testament to the impact he made. Love him or loathe him his footballing talent was incredible and I for one will never bore of watching his skills and talent. Footballing legend.

What a strange comparison to make, couldn't be more different if you'd actually tried,
Ignoring the different sport, Warne played a lot of his cricket in this country, for English clubs, including locally. Many, many people will have seen him play live, will have met him, will have shared a drink with him etc, therefore having an attachment to him. How many on here have seen Maradona play live, in a competitive game?.
Warne still works in this country for 4/5 months a year, so people still have the chance to meet him, stop and have a chat. It wouldn't be strange to have some kind of remembrance when Warne passes away.
