Re: Maradona
Outside of his dribbling ability. This is my lasting memory of him growing up. That celebration against Greece blew my mind as a kid!

Re: Maradona
There's very little between him and Messi, absolute great, if not the greatest - and a complete nutcase.
Shame some can't see past a handball, yet wouldn't mention a handball for a good number of others... including not only Henry, but Messi as well.

Quite simply the greatest there has ever been, in my opinion.

Re: Maradona
As most other England fans , I've always felt cheated by " the hand of god " . But as a footballer he's one of the greatest of all time , and can be put in the same bracket as : pele , best , cryuff , messi , Ronaldo and of course dean marney .

Re: Maradona
His handball was my first footy memory. So, no, I can't see past it . I'm not particularly sad about him passing as I never got the impression he was a good person - just a supremely talented footballer. I don't think we need to eulogize such characters, to be honest.
Considering the amount of blow he he did, 60's not a bad innings.

Re: Maradona
A total genius of a footballer.....remember being excited watching him when he played for Argentina v England at Wembley in the 1980 friendly. The documentary, Maradona, which came out last year (on Netflix I think) is a fantastic watch, mainly focusing on his time at Napoli where he became a God to the locals whilst getting involved with some unsavoury people. Some of the footage is incredible, including some absolutely brutal treatment dished out by opposition defenders. Very sad that he is gone.

There is plenty to read about his character which disputes that. Granted he definitely had his issues.claret_in_exile wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 6:01 pmHis handball was my first footy memory. Re: Maradona
Anyone who knows me well is aware of what I think about Maradona. Simply the greatest footballer of all time. Once he had the ball at his feet he came alive, incredible close control, pace and balance. Inspirational to a nation, a leader of average teams that became champions in their own right. And a team player as so well illustrated by the songs in the dressing room after victories in the '86 World Cup. RIP to a footballer in a league of his own.

Absolutely. The fact his own teammates (many of them rivals) loved him says it all. Same with the people of Naples.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 6:35 pmAnyone who knows me well is aware of what I think about Maradona. Simply the greatest footballer of all time. A cheat and the nonsense about best of his generation is definitely a step too far.
Kempes was the best forward Argentina produced and he didn't used volleyball skills to score

Re: Maradona
Fairly simply, because being coked off your head is illegal, not only in sport but in life.
It doesn’t give you any sporting advantage, though. It’s not a performance enhancing drug like steroids, for example.
Re: Maradona
So you don’t know why he was sent home from the 94 World Cup , here’s a tip for you ,when commenting on a subject it’s probably best to have some idea what you’re talking about .

Apologies, just read up on the doping in 1994. He was still the greatest ever for me.

Re: Maradona
I would think less than 5% of footballers were doing illegal drugs. Lots of alcohol probably.
Cyclist was probably over 95% of them doing drugs.
One is a great, one a drugs cheat.
I don’t get this world sometimes.
Re: Maradona
A footballer taking drugs to enhance his performance is not even relatable to a cyclist doing it. What a stupid comparison.

Re: Maradona
So you think it’s ok for footballers to take drugs to enhance their performance.
Lance would have won several Tours without doing drugs due to his natural talent.
Don’t don’t let get in the way of your prejudice.

How 1 footballer being guilty of taking banned substances (for weight loss and breathing) can influence a football match where there’s 27 other footballer’s available to play is nonsense. If 1 Burnley player this season decided to do it. Do you really think it’d make a jot of difference to the final outcome of our season? Would Barnes suddenly have the feet of Messi?
I know cycling is a team sport of such, but each individual can influence the result far easier by taking banned substances.
