I remember spending some months in Canada years ago, and a few of us shared at a car. It had a bench front seat and an 8 track player. There was a cassette stuck inside the machine that wouldn’t come out.... it played over and over and over again.

Darkness on the edge of town, and it’s this album that finally won me over to the Bruce side...

From this, Badlands and Darkness.
From born to run, born to run.
From the river, the river and point blank.
Absolutely, although from "The River" I'd probably go for "The River" and "The Price You Pay" (although Sherry Darlin' always puts a smile on my face, even though I am pretty much the person my user name implies!! In fact I'd defy anyone not to smile listening to that song tbh!)

If we're taking strictly vinyl I've recently revisited 'In the Land of Grey and Pink'-Caravan and 'The Court of the Crimson King'- King Crimson in recent days.

Plenty of reference to The Boss. I wonder what fans think of his new album 'Letter to You? For me he's had 3 great albums of the 21st Century, The Rising, Magic, but his latest I think is his best this century. Any Springsteen fans should give it a listen, it's a grower and not a bad track on it.

Wouldn’t argue with them 3 although Wrecking Ball was the best tour. I’m also giving Letter To You plenty of listens. Every track available on youtube for those who want to give it a spin.

Absolutely agree, in picking one from each, " Jungleland " from " Born to Run " ( I think our fellow poster, " MagicRat " will know this ! ), " Badlands " from " Edge of Town, and " Sherry Darlin' " from " The River ", although " Little girl I wanna marry you " runs it close for very personal reasons ... ;)

For me the run of three magnificent Springsteen albums would have started with The Wild, The Innocent and ended with Darkness. The River would have been an outstanding single album,(indeed that was the original premise,) but the final version which came out includes three or four throwaway tracks that I could never love. Having said that it also includes two of his greatest soul vocal performances on "Drive All Night" and the criminally underplayed "Fade Away"

Just to extract us from this Springsteen love-in, has anyone mention Free - Fire and Water? A classic surely.

I played this the other day right through and frankly it's quite extraordinary although one of the things I used to like about it, Rodgers vocals, now seem to irritate me a bit. The spare laid back sound and super bass playing though is real quality.

Another one is Kate Bush - The Kick Inside from 1978.

It opens with a humpback whale singing and continues through to the stunning title song via a whole range of tunes and only one 'ordinary' song - 'James and the Cold Gun'. It includes the single 'Wuthering Heights' which was so different to anything else on the radio at the time it sounded like it came from some other planet. When you add to this the fact that she was 19 at the time this record came out, it makes the whole enterprise even more remarkable.

Footnote: there was a whole album called 'Songs of the Humpback Whale'

I wonder if they wrote the music to fit the BBC's F1 coverage, that music & F1 go hand in hand along with Murray Walker & James Hunt, gotta be in the top 20 albums of all time.

Some absolute horrors on this thread. Looking at that last post, Deep Purple were every bit as awful as I remembered them to be. Ditto King Crimson with their debut album and so so many other suggestions. Just wait for it. Kindonesque will be sticking his four-penneth in any second, heaping praise on the worst group of al time, Van Der Graff Generator.

Not all bad by the Burnley faithful though. Looking again, I see mentions for Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison. But then you see HollandsPies suggestion of albums by Hawkwind, Judas Priest and Metallica and you just want to crawl back under a stone again.

I'm guessing you mean the likes of I'm a Rocker and Crush on You ? I'd agree these are distinctly average "filler" but, maybe Ramrod aside, I can't think of ny others on The River I'd class as filler. That said if you distilled it down to say it's best 12 tracks it would be incredible. Played Drive All Night the other day..whilst driving at night, and it still gets the hairs on the back of my neck up.

The residents of Burnley were systematically brainwashed by Peter Hammill in the late sixties/early seventies, into thinking that this pretentious drivel had any musical merit. You were obviously one of the victims, BC.

Pleasantly surprised with new album. Never like anything without the E Street band, and more a darkness, born to run, river and USA man, but the new one is certainly best he's done for a while. Quite a few will sound good live.

Spot on St.Albans. I'd add "You Can Look But You'd Better Not Touch" to the two you mention. I don't mind Ramrod, however. "Crush On You" would probably be my least favourite Springsteen song.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned "Backstreets" which remains one of my all time favourites. I've got a 14-minutes live version of Backstreets from pre The River which includes "Drive All Night" in its formative stage as its middle section. It's impossible to quantify how much pleasure his music's given me since I first discovered Born To Run in 1975.

Ah yes I'd forgotten You Can Look... but I agree with you that it's pretty poor. Even Crush on You isnt his worst ever song imo though ...I think I'd go for "Surprise Surprise" , or maybe "Cowboy Pete" off his pipe-and-slippers album, Working On a Dream for that honour myself. It was me who mentioned Backstreets as I always think it's a magnificent, and under-performed..song. I think I've heard the version you mention at some point too. I share your feelings about the importance of Springsteen's music over our lifetimes.

You surely can’t get worse than Pony Boy on Human Touch, or Part Man, Part Monkey on Tracks.
Two truly dreadful pieces of earache.
BTW. Cowboy Pete live is a fine song.

Wrecking Ball reminds me of the album by Emmylou Harris from 1995. Highly thought of at the time for it's recording quality as well as its music.

I became aware of springsteen in the late 70s. I've got every album and seen him live many times.
But can understand its not everyone's cup of tea, similar to me not liking steps

When I say I don't like Springsteen people correct me and say 'No, you just don't get it.'

I get it. I don't like it.
And you are right. I love him but music is your soul so good luck to ya. There are plenty of supposedly star bands I can’t be done with.

Looks like we've similar views St.Albans. Working On A Dream is for me comfortably his worst album and Surprise, Surprise and Outlaw Pete are stinkers. I even dislike the tille track. Supper club crooning.

Wrecking Ball reminds me of the album by Emmylou Harris from 1995. Highly thought of at the time for it's recording quality as well as its music.

Produced by Daniel Lanois, I believe, as was its superb follow-up "Red Dirt Girl"

As someone posted further up the thread, Hampstead would have been all over this thread. :)

Peter Hammill of Van Der graaf a prog rocker who influenced punk and post punk new wave. He influenced John Lydon, The Cure,Nick Cave,The Fall. Lydons vocal was influenced by Hammill.

Fairport Convention have been mentioned but not their classic album, Liege & Lief from 1969. This album by what is considered their classic line-up with Sandy Dendy and Dave Swarbrick completed their transition from West Coast covers (Dylan, Mitchell) to rocky versions of folk songs - folk rock.

I’ve been listening to Can recently. Their music seems to have stood the test of time and has perhaps influenced some recent bands, Mark E Smith acknowledged their influence. I think Suicide have had a big influence on subsequent post punk music without being massively popular. Classic albums for me are Real Life- Magazine, Unknown Pleasures- Joy Division and Hex Enduction Hour-The Fall. Those three are my consistent favourites loads of others drift in and out depending on my mood.

"Surprise, Surprise" is a truly awful song and even more so when you consider what Bruce normally puts out. It's not the only poor song to make it onto an album of his and some others are rightly mentioned above, although it's a very rare event. It's also fair to say that I think Bruce tends to write with live performances in mind and an ear for how things can be done on stage because that really is his forte and I agree, certain songs I hadn't rated suddenly came alive when I heard them played live. "Magic" being one and "Spare Parts" being another. "I Wish I Were Blind" is absolutely amazing played live for the MTV recording for example. I also concur that "Wrecking Ball" is an excellent album, as is "Magic". I've seen him on stage a number of times now down the years and it's the equivalent of a trip to Lourdes for me, as I feel totally uplifted for months afterwards. IMO everyone should try it! (Even dougcollins! :) )
