Classic albums revisited
Re: Classic albums revisited
I may have missed it but how can we get this far without a mention of Unknown Pleasures. To me the very definition of a classic.

Re: Classic albums revisited
Ommadawn is the Oldfield album that continually drags me back to him - Oldfield, Jarre, floyd and War of the Worlds (my uncle once played the intro down the phone to my grandma - Richard Burton scared her to death) together with a lot of Stax, Tamala and Motown was the soundtrack of my childhood particularly my dad and uncles
from the time I started buying records the ones I go back to most are Nightclubbing and Warm Leatherette by Grace Jones, Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads and The Dreaming by Kate Bush

Loved the early Genesis, and Gabriel's theatrics.
I suppose it had to change, but thought the Genesis fronted by Collins were more "pop".

Really don't think One for the Vine,Afterglow,Dance on a volcano etc are really pop songs,I get that some people don't particularly like it but it's not pop,IMO

Specials - More Special, always enjoy the upbeat tempo opener 'Enjoy Yourself' and jaded closer 'Enjoy yourself (reprise)'
Pixies - Death to the Pixies, suspect compilations are frowned upon on here, but a classic in mind
Jamie T - Kings and Queens, again niche, but when so many tracks are played so frequently on the radio that makes it a classic for me

Re: Classic albums revisited
Trespass is probably the album that I have at the top of the pile. There is some real dross after Duke, but the yellow coloured one, I think it is "shapes", is definitely worthwhile.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 8:50 pmLoved the early Genesis, and Gabriel's theatrics.

A few years back, I was at a funeral of somebody that would now be nearing 100 if still with us, and she went out to atomic rooster. I'd like to think she had picked that herself. Another one had definitely selected dark side of the moon - but she suffered badly from dementia, among other things. Still, it beats "my way" and the truly turgid version of the Lord is my shepherd that the local crematorium has pre-recorded. It seems to have about a million verses.

For me, 'Selling England by The Pound' is the perfect Genesis album - Gabriel's vocals, Collins' drums, Hackett's fine guitar. a masterpiece.
Nothing with Collins fronting the band comes near.

Once again I’m out of kilter with the rest of the music loving world.
I never liked Genesis with Gabriel and whilst not a fanatic for them without him I do prefer that line up. I do though really enjoy Gabriels solo work.

I would give my right arm to walk round here, nothing beats sliding an LP out of its sleeve giving it a clean then putting the needle on the vinyl.....Cd's and digital music are the worst thing to happen to music, although when I was buying vinyl it was £2.50...these days some albums are £22.00 +.....I miss vinyl.

You're right. Maybe they should be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. Oh wait...
On a side note just watching The Who live at Kilburn on Sky arts. What a performance.

Chicago were denied entry for many, many years because they had turned down the founder for an interview, when he was at Rolling Stone. There are bands in there I’ve never heard of.
Both REM & Chicago are rock greats.

There is something about the album covers but I buy music, so for me CDs/digital was a step forward.Steve1956 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 11:39 amI would give my right arm to walk round here, nothing beats sliding an LP out of its sleeve giving it a clean then putting the needle on the vinyl.....Cd's and digital music are the worst thing to happen to music, although when I was buying vinyl it was £2.50...these days some albums are £22.00 +.....I miss vinyl.

Vinyl is too delicate and fussy to extract the best sound from them (dust, scratches, warps, wearing out) not to mention the setting up of the turntable (accurate speed, the arms weighting and tracking, turntable levelling and protection from vibrations). To me it's a marvel you can get any sort of sound out of the system.
Then there's the flexibility of CD/digital. Most CD players can select tracks you want to hear easily and in the order you wish. If you've ripped your CDs to your computer you can make playlists, use 'shuffle' to hear random songs and generally listen to what you want. Most albums have some crap songs on them which I don't want to hear.

Had REM’s Green on in the car a fair bit recently. Had a yearning to hear ‘World Leader Pretend’ on the week of the presidential elections. Prophetic in reference to a guy like Trump. Great combination of songwriting and production mastery from Scott Litt. think Life’s Rich Pageant remains my favourite REM record though. Love the IRS years.

He was sharing an apartment with Glen Frey and gave him the line, “It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford” for Take It Easy.
