A sobering story, CT. As for the game I was still in London and after doing a quick check recalled that I was watching Wales v the All Blacks on Grandstand. Interesting comments from Stokoe and I noticed 7or 8 names in the Sunderland team that five months later were going to grab the sporting headlines.

Never forget Daz, he was a good friend and on the very day I write this I’ve lost a relative although she was 93.

Some very good players in that Sunderland team - Montgomery, Watson & Tueart to name three. We were very close to signing Brian Chambers too a few years later.

Tueart was a very good player until he came to Turf Moor, spoke to him at a function at SJP a few years ago, said he was embarrassed by his non-performance for us!

Re:the match. Of all the many times I went on Roker this was the only match I wasn’t behind one of the goals. No idea how or why but we ended up directly opposite the players tunnel. Starting to feel promotion was on after this win.

We were sat in the stand on that side for that game. Not sure why I remember but it cost 70p to sit down.

As for Daz, you don’t forget.

A good read CT, although the loss of your pal at such a tender age puts life into perspective, I hope you're keeping OK given all the nonsense you have to deal with on here, people should learn to appreciate all the time you and others put into this site and also the message board, and this valuable resource is also free.

Right now I've got that off my chest onto the game, this era was before my time, for a 2nd division team we had a blooming good squad in those days, and this was shown in the success we briefly enjoyed in the mid 1970's, although alas it was all too brief, and the downhill path started soon after.

I note a surprisingly low crowd of 17,000, but I'd imagine they made plenty of noise, Roker Park was one of the traditional stadiums, and it was a shame when Sunderland decided to move, but that's progress I suppose.

Roker was an intimidating place. It was our second season after relegation, it was their third but what a low attendance really. Maybe they weren’t too impressed with appointing an ex Newcastle player as manager. That manager now has a statue outside the Stadium of Light.

We’ve not won a league game at Sunderland since.

17,000 wasn't a good gate, but we didn't get too many of those even that season.

Sorry about your friend, Tony. So young to die. My sister's daughter was killed in a car crash. The other driver was drunk. She was just short of her 20th birthday.

Thinking back on it would probably be described as a 4-3-3 formation with James, Fletcher and Casper in the front three, with Collins, Nulty and Dobson a midfield three. Great times.

It was a brilliant time and even better given it followed those few disappointing years prior to it. Didn't last long enough unfortunately. It was a 4-3-3. Once Thomas left Dobbo pushed further forward with Geoff Nulty playing the more defensive midfield role.

I sit next to jdrobbo on the Turf and when the 2013/14 season was progressing, I told him to savour it, that seasons like that don't come round very often. I thought they were both very similar.

Yes, brilliant for two or three years in the 1970s, what's happening now has simply beggared belief for a club our size.

I was in the same class as Daz at BGS. A little lad with a big heart and very friendly. I remember him in the House Matches and he was quite a tidy footballer. I remember the news of his death and feeling very bad about it.

He was a little lad, was at BGS from 1964 to 1971 and then to uni at Nottingham.
