Tyson Fury...
has asked to be removed from the shortlist for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year saying that he is "the people's champion and I have no need for verification of any awards."
Aye, alright mate, whatever you say.

I like him, obviously not the sharpest tool in the box at times and a lot of that is to do with the way he has been brought up. He's a changed man these days and does a lot for mental health, I've really warmed to him though and he is the best HW in the world at the minute.

Good on him. Awards like this are absolute nonsense. Same goes for Music, Film and TV awards. It’s just pure mainstream nonsense for people that have to be forced feed these thing.

Re: Tyson Fury...
SPOTY is a joke, as is Tyson Fury. Surely there’s nobody out there who takes him seriously is there?
This is all a bit juvenile.... he can’t handle knowing that he won’t win it (obv be LH) so comes out with this rubbish.
Boxing’s in a sorry state right now... we’ve got Mike Tyson fighting Jones Jnr, mcrory calling out Holyfield, it’s all just a bit sad. Even sadder when you think the most interesting thing going on is what fury has to say.
Oh for the days of hagler v hearns or even benn v eubank.

Re: Tyson Fury...
Generally a world heavyweight champ trumps F1 ,though not exactly TF’s 1st time at the rodeo . Though his performance to utterly dismantle a beast like Wilder was up there with Ali’s best for sure . Great division atm with the likes of Fury,Wilder AJ et al
Hamilton will probs win it though it’s worth noting that SPOTY year is nothing whatsoever ( and never has been) about “ personality “ it’s purely about the sporting achievement . The shows are almost unwatchable the last few yrs with a real lack of footage and hideously overburdened with almost agonisingly woke credentials that should never be needed for a hugely diverse sporting nation like ours

I would agree that the heavyweight boxing champ trumps the F1 WC, but whether you like LH or not (I cant be doing with him these days) his surpassing of MS record is some achievement.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 5:36 pmGenerally a world heavyweight champ trumps F1 ,though not exactly TF’s 1st time at the rodeo . To describe TF's beating of Wilder (who wouldn't get into the top 20 in the days of Norton, Spinks, Foreman, Frazier, Cooper) as being up there with Ali's best is utterly bewildering to me. Good boxing match no doubt, and a good performance by TF for sure, (not as good as his previous fight tho imho he was excellent in that) but up there with Ali's best? Muhammad Ali's best?
The heavyweight division is in a poor state with TF, Wilder and AJ being the best of what's on offer. It's seriously lacking in depth imho.
Absolutely agree with your final paragraph though...

Re: Tyson Fury...
I have warmed to Fury since his comeback, he looks a lot better than i ever thought he was, and he probably is number one on the planet right now, but i genuinely think he'd look amateur in with those i have mentioned.BurnleyFC wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 6:22 pmSorry, but Tyson Fury would beat most if not all of those boxers you mention.
Two maybe, but the likes of Frazier, Norton, and Foreman would eat him alive. He doesn't really have the power to hurt these big tough strong men. He wouldn't be allowed to lean and grapple like he does to good effect now. They were big enough to counter his tactics easily. Ali would just embarrass him. See Ali/Dunn for a good example of what this fight would look like.
If Tyson Fury really wants to, he could go down as an all time great.
He's in a fortunate position... the lack of a REAL heavyweight division could well see that come to fruition

I sincerely hope that the borough recognises his achievements properly, and puts up a suitable reminder. I think it was CT who suggested the bottom of Manchester Rd in the pedestrian area. Whatever it is, it should be seen by absolutely everybody who comes into town.

Boxing and Darts especially (I leave Horse Racing out as it hasn’t got to that degree in broadcast terms yet). They’re like “male” versions of what the Kardashians and reality tv is for the “females” in their generation. Nonsense. Banter nonsense.

Re: Tyson Fury...
The pre-fight weigh-ins and hyped up press conferences, along with the faux scuffles and pathetic staredowns, has near enough killed off professional boxing for me. Too many of the big fights now resembles the WWE rubbish that most kids grow out of watching by the time they are 12 years old.

SPOTY is outdated and should be shelved. Tyson Fury is King. Long live the King. Somebody asked if he should be taken seriously. DW does.

I suspect the fact that he hadn't a hope in hell of winning it had something to do with it. Coming bottom of that particular list would have been especially humiliating.

i actually hope o'sullivan wins. not for him (i detest him and his whinging self-pitying voice) but for snooker.
he won't and i largely agree with the negative sentiments towards the whole 'competition'.
i think the prize could be given a boost by replacing the word 'personality' with something more appropriate.

Spot on mate, there's some serious morons on here. What tyson fury has done for people with mental health is nothing but short of exceptional. People have been to his house in a moment of crisis and he has always had time for them. Rashford does the free school meals thing, which is fantastic granted, but idolised on here. Either people don't understand mental health properly and it's devastating effects or you're just being a moron.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 10:47 amPossibly the thickest clueless post I’ve ever seen on here ,ffs when was the last time you watched a horse race ?

Re: Tyson Fury...
I like Fury.
Considering his upbringing, and the fact he gets punch in the head for a living, I think he’s a pretty smart bloke.
Clearly looks after his money. Still lives in a relatively modest house in Morecambe.
With his upbringing and lack of formal education it’s inevitable that he will say the odd stupid thing. His downfall also seemed inevitable. However the way he’s continued on and built himself back up is to be commended.
I think there is a lot of snobbery and narrow mindedness when people discuss Fury on here.
