"Cold Weather Payments" are different from "Winter Fuel Allowances"

Yes I know that.
Winter Fuel Allowance for most people is £200.

Cold weather payments are just £10 that are paid out when the temperature dips to a certain level I think for a certain amout of days

I was simply asking Ian if the £10 he mentioned was a cold weather payment

In 1972.....when I was a teenager Ted heath the PM gave pensioners a tenner for xmas...which would have bought a shed load of beer back then.

Introduced by Mr Heath in 1972, as a one off payment, but was repeated in 1973 and 1974 .... Wilson cancelled it in 1975, but Callaghan reintroduced it in 1977, and it's been paid at £10 ever since. When it was introduced , the State pension was £6.75 a week so it would have been very welcome at the time ...

When do I get my £10?

No. It’s the Christmas money we old sods get every year. Mine arrived yesterday although I’m still awaiting my winter fuel allowance which has always previously arrived in November.

I'm a old sod, but I've never had the cold weather payment.

Unlike the winter fuel payment, the cold weather payment is means- and/or health-tested.

I wasn't even aware of cold weather payments but, found this which confirms your post lakedistrict.



You may get a Cold Weather Payment if you're getting certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest.

You'll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over 7 consecutive days. You'll get £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March. The Cold Weather Payment scheme runs from 1 November 2020 to 31 March 2021.

£10.00 in 1972 would have been worth around £130 in todays money.

Yes it was a good gesture by the then PM was my thinking....

1972 was the year following decimalisation. £10.00 then was a decent sum. When you consider a First Class Stamp will cost 85 pence (17s in old money) from the 1st January 2021 it puts it into some perspective.

I was getting quite perturbed about people saying I've got my tenner,I've got my tenner,so I thought I'd look into it..."people are paid a ten pound bonus if they are in receipt of certain BENEFITS", I didnt have to investigate any further never had a benefit off anyone in my life,they even took some of mine away by making me work an extra year before I got my pension ....some people have all the luck,I'd earmarked mine for a nice bottle of Botham,Willis,Merrill Australian Shiraz.

The list of benefits on the .Gov web site includes state pension so you will get it Steve.
I'm the same as you having to wait an extra year for my pension, I was 66 on the 5th so might not get the tenner this year.

As I understand it, all pensioners get the £10, one pensioner from each household gets the Winter fuel allowance and then the cold weather payment if it gets cold enough.

If you get pension credit you qualify for the cold weather payment, but I don't think the state pension alone qualifies.

I've just checked my bank account online, and I've received the £10!!

The Gov Uk website must not be up to date, or badly worded. I certainly don't receive any of the benefits to which it refers.

Are you confusing that with winter fuel allowance that all pensioners get? If you were born on or before 5th October 1954 you will qualify for the winter fuel allowance no matter what your circumstances. It is between £100 and £300.

£100 each if more than one qualifier in the household
£200 if you live alone or are the only one in the household who qualifies

Goes up to £300 for people born on or before 27th September 1940 although if you live with someone who qualifies who was born later than the qualifying date it goes up to £200.

The Mrs says she has definitely had the £10 payed into her account before when the temperature dropped below zero for above a week a couple of years ago.... She "IS NOT" in receipt of any benefit other than pension

The £10 is the Christmas bonus that all pensioners get. The £100 to £300 is winter fuel allowance that all pensioners get. The cold weather payment is £25 for each 7 day period when the temperature drops below zero on each of the 7 days.

Cold weather payment is received in those circumstances if you’re getting:

Pension Credit
Income Support
income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Universal Credit
Support for Mortgage Interest

Fair enough she thought it must be the cold weather payment .... I am not arguing as I don't wish to be barred
