Favourite promotion under Dyche

Post by tiger76 » Mon Dec 07, 2020 5:17 pm

I don't know if this topic has been covered before, but I don't recollect it being discussed in recent months.

For me it has too be 13/14, probably because the success was so unexpected, and literally came out of nowhere, Austin had been sold on the eve of the season, and even the most optimistic fans expected a battle to avoid the drop, instead we got to relish the Vings partnership and the delights of Trippier as we won promotion, also this campaign finally saw our long awaited triumph happen at Ewood, and it was even sweeter due to the fact we had to come from behind to win, and that victory was a vital one as it widened the gap between the top 2 and the rest, I suspect many knew in their hearts that we were heading back to the big time that day.

Well 15/16 had the 23 match unbeaten run, our success whilst not exactly routine was hardly unexpected, and our budget that year was one of the largest in the division, so promotion should have been our aim from the off, clinching the title on the final day was just the icing on the cake.

Anyone agree or disagree? all opinions welcomed. :)

Both fantastic but the first one simply because we never thought we were in with a chance given the situation we were in at the time.

Both so different though, the first one we got the brilliant start with those seven successive wins so we always looked likely, the second was second half of the season catch up. Along with that wonderful 1972/73 season, they were all brilliant. But has to be 13/14 over 15/16 for me, just about, for the reason we had no squad really.

Has to be the 2nd one as Eddie says 23, 23 undefeated...

Those last 4 away matches were great days out ... Huddersfield away ... PNE away ... Birmingham Away ... Charlton Away ... loved every minute of it

The first one by a HUGE margin. We were up at full time at Ewood. I wasn’t just celebrating that win but promotion as well. There was no way we weren’t going up after that. I’d seen enough in the months of the season up till that point that we were the real deal. Ewood confirmed it.

I think what swayed it for me with the second one was the growing realisation, week by week, that we might actually do it. Preston away seemed a massive step in setting us up for a glorious finale.

Ewood that day was so special. It wasn’t for those like me who had seen us win there before, it was for all those younger Burnley fans to finally have the opportunity to witness one of the most special events a Burnley fan can ever wish for. Have to say I enjoyed it too.

I asked the lads I went with whether it was as good as they’d imagined it would be. Much better they all agreed.

It's such a tricky decision and the best reasons have already been stated.

I've plumped for 15/16 because we were the Champions and it included those last four away wins and especially Championship Day at Charlton.

Some of the best memories of my life on both occasions.

First one for me, simply because it was so unexpected.

A tough one, both were great. I'll go for 13/14 because it was so unexpected. Looking back, it probably shouldn't have been with Trippier and Ings both playing in a Championship side. But that's just hindsight, nobody saw it coming.. even we didn't until that QPR game.

Those 3 games against Forest, Derby and Blackburn were amazing, plus that evening at Barnsley when it was obvious we wouldn't choke.

I live in Preston, amongst the Knobbers. That night in 2016 was amazing, and even they admit they’ve never seen an away followings’ atmosphere like it. It was proper party time!

2015/16 for me as well.
Preston just unbelievable atmosphere, proper scenes.
Charlton absolutely amazing day out.
The two stand out results in that run in though, were the 2-2 away at Brighton and Middlesbrough at home. The noise when Keane equalised at home to Boro. So many great, great moments.

Better football 13/14 but coming from behind with 23 undefeated just edges it for me.
Vings were amazing though.

That first one was just magical, I got swept up with the whole thing, sprinting to the centre circle after the full time whistle against Wigan, shouting "Daaaaave" and Dave Jones looking at me with his arms outstretched and me hugging and jumping up and down with him is my second happiest memory as a Burnley fan.

The second promotion was just nerve wracking for those last few games before we sealed it against QPR. I felt sick before that PNE away game, worried to bits but what an atmosphere the night was.

I have to pick the first promotion though, it seemed like a miracle.

First one for me. 2nd favourites for relegation after Yeovil weren't we beforehand? Completely unexpected.

Football we played was brilliant that season. Some great performances, the games at home against Reading, QPR, Forest and Wigan in particular, spring to mind. Ings and Vokes both getting 20 goals, the win at Ewood, an actual win at Ipswich. Hard to top that season.

The 15/16 season was a lot more attritional. We were expected to be up there, for the majority of it though it was a real grind. There were some exceptions, the win at Brentford being an obvious one. Shackell's return was also a real highlight for comical reasons. Certainly can't argue with 23 unbeaten and a title. Don't think we'd have made the top 2 that season without Barton dragging us through a good number of games.

Just lean towards the 13/14 season as the better promotion. But 93 points in both and only five defeats in both show they were pretty much equally great seasons.

What a tough choice.

I'll go with the Title win. I liked being an underdog the first time but it felt so satisfying to get the championship. When I think back to how that season started with the Juke and Vossen it scares me, as if time might go back and change it to a mid table season with crap strikers.

I still can't believe Dyche wasn't manager of the season.

Absolutely loved them both, of course. The first was so unexpected and so nerve jangling, but the second probably shades it for me because of the 23 undefeated following the Boxing Day debacle at Hull when we were utterly awful and going nowhere and it culminated in an absolutely amazing and memorable day in London for the Charlton game.

For me the trip to Wembley was the one, lasting memories, the planning, arranging tickets and flights to the UK, hotel and everything about it was magical but then again they were all brilliant, but winning at Wembley was just that bit special. Maybe the cherry on top of the icing they all had.
