Callum Styles
Re: Callum Styles
Hopefully the way he was treated by Blake hasn't put him off the idea of a future return to Burnley. The Barnsley fans have been raving about him since last season. There are even a couple on twitter asking bookies for odds on him playing for England.
These are the types of players we need to look to be snapping up before they get beyond our reaches, like Toney most probably is now at Brentford. We have been linked recently to Tyrese Campbell at Stoke and looking at the trajectory he is on, he will probably be beyond our grasp soon.

Or if you want a full back, Stuart Pearce was playing for Wealdstone.

Re: Callum Styles
Surely bigger questions to be asked about why the club gave a manager so much control over the youth setup, when it was more than likely he'd only be here for 3 or 4 years max?

Re: Callum Styles
When Cotterill became manager in 2004 he was amazed that the manager had control of the youth set up and said he shouldn't. We appointed Vince Overson as head of youth and we moved on. Coyle didn't have control, Laws didn't and Dyche doesn't.
One name missing is Howe. I don't blame Howe for the mess, he didn't like Dobbo & Vince and all he did was bring his mate in when he got the chance. I blame whoever allowed him to do that in the first place. I don't know the answer for sure but at the time the two people running the place both had surnames beginning with FL. I don't think I'd look too much further than that. From what I can see, Blake then got in well with Lee Hoos who protected him which, if the case, surprises me. Baldwin saw through Blake very quickly and mercifully he departed in summer 2016.
Re: Callum Styles
One is Flood. Who's the other FL?

Under the Blake set up we also decided to get rid of a lot of our scouts who were bringing players over from Manchester and Merseyside for example.

Paul Fletcher doesn't seem to come out of many situations, playing aside, very well at all does he? Walked away from the Wembley stadium build as costs spiralled, responsible for the Ricoh in Coventry which has been an unmitigated disaster, proposed replacing the CF stand with what looked like a bread bin, CEO when we made the disastrous managerial appointment of Brian Laws and one of the 2 responsible for handing over power of our youth system to a man who virtually destroyed it.

More the Youth scouts chose to move on rather than getting rid with at least nine working with other Cat 1 Academy's now.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 7:14 amUnder the Blake set up we also decided to get rid of a lot of our scouts who were bringing players over from Manchester and Merseyside for example.
But time moves on and it's good to see the club looking like it's moving forward with its Youth Development.

Some of them definitely didn’t choose to move on.
Re: Callum Styles
Yes you may well be correct from 2015 onwards as some maybe were binned off with various changes to the Head of Recruitment role as I've not followed with interest from then, but I know prior to that from 2012 to 2015 about 15 local youth scouts chose to leave the club.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 11:11 amSome of them definitely didn’t choose to move on.

As you said previously thankfully the youth setup know seems to be in good hands and hopefully we’ll see some of them in the first team squad in the not too distant future.Andingle wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 12:51 pmYes you may well be correct from 2015 onwards as some maybe were binned off with various changes to the Head of Recruitment role as I've not followed with interest from then, but I know prior to that from 2012 to 2015 about 15 local youth scouts chose to leave the club.

Re: Callum Styles
I honestly thought the one thing holding us back pre-Blake was a lack of finance. I always believed that the people in charge of the youth set up were heading in the right direction and getting in the right people both on the scouting and coaching side.
Then came Blake.
Then Blake went and the rebuilding could start with those left and this time with far less restrictions in terms of finance which has allowed us to move to where we are, somewhere I honestly thought I'd never see us. I don't know how many times I've been to Gawthorpe since all the changes were made, I've been in the building a good few times too yet I'm still in awe of the place every time I'm down there. All credit to those who have got our academy to where it is today but I'll never forget the work done by those involved from 2004 to 2011 when we took massive steps forward despite all the financial restrictions placed on us.

Re: Callum Styles
Nothing like Pugh though. Marc was 19 when he left and had spent three years in the youths and reserves, this was a lad who was refused a scholarship despite all the coaches and scouts believing he was the best player. Two totally different scenarios.
Re: Callum Styles
I've only been down to Gawthorpe(never barnfield to me) on three occasions since its rebuild, sadly working for another club but was hugely impressed as its an excellent facility now, one that the club can rightly be proud and one that was desperately needed for many years to move it forward and has no excuses now not to keep moving forward, the facility and finances are in place, now it just needs the hard work, determination and desire to match.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 4:22 pmI honestly thought the one thing holding us back pre-Blake was a lack of finance. Will only ever have one name for me Andingle and that's Gawthorpe. Rather sad really that the sponsor didn't want the name Gawthorpe in their sponsored name. Always Gawthorpe for me although the one additional name I do approve of is calling Arthur's bungalow the Arthur Bellamy Media Centre.Andingle wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 5:19 pmI've only been down to Gawthorpe(never barnfield to me) on three occasions since its rebuild, sadly working for another club but was hugely impressed as its an excellent facility now, one that the club can rightly be proud and one that was desperately needed for many years to move it forward and has no excuses now not to keep moving forward, the facility and finances are in place, now it just needs the hard work, determination and desire to match.

A bit outdated looking purely at what level he’s at. Academies these days are as much about finding players you can recoup fees from. This kid has already moved for £500k. That could have been ours.
But from what I’ve heard from a couple of mates who follow Barnsley, we’re destined to end up regretting this mistake way more than that.

You only need to look at the revenue generated by City and Chelsea through academy sales to see they aren't fussed where kids tend to end up, it's what money they can make from them.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 7:23 pmA bit outdated looking purely at what level he’s at. They have the advantage that they can buy kids at a very young age. They're not going to be allowed to import kids anymore after Brexit so that's a good thing.

No, but being a Category1 Academy now entitles Burnley to go into Cat3 Academy's looking at players to enquire about.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 7:36 pmThey have the advantage that they can buy kids at a very young age. Is that being stopped now?

Who knows, might be, but their departures from Burnley, one being a pro and the other a schoolboy who had never been full time, are totally different.

I know it was being mooted once everything had settled down after all the work was done upgrading etc.

He had a very steady game, scored the winner and also made a great block late on to deny Norwich an equaliser. Looks a very decent player and good luck to him. Very hard working side are Barnsley and should have won by more today. Home to Chelsea or Luton in the next round.

Another goal for Callum Styles tonight from left wing back. 4 goals and 2 assists now this season, top bunch in the division for tackles, interceptions and distance ran as well. Good on him, pleased to see him fulfilling his potential.

Still only 20, maybe a one that got away story.
Although some lads certainly seem to benefit from playing regular mens football, they come on leaps and bounds.
It's a boom or bust.

Much as I respect your opinion, Dandeclaret, there is absolutely no proof that this player would have thrived or reached whatever standard he has achieved so far had he stayed at BFC.
As I've said before "best of luck to him, and well done to Barnsley.

Re: Callum Styles
You may have no proof, and proof is impossible to provide in the case of a footballer.
What you can have is belief. You may not have belief, and that’s fine. Having first watched Callum at the age of 7 and having been part of the scouting team that brought him to the club, and then having watched him regularly through the age groups, and watched him when stepped up in age groups, and watched him be the best player at under 16, I had belief that he would make a professional footballer at a good level.
He was a playing professional football at the age of 16, 8 weeks after his release. I’d say my belief was pretty well placed on the tens of views and hundreds of training sessions I observed him in.
