Paolo Rossi

Post by dermotdermot » Thu Dec 10, 2020 3:50 am

A wonderful player who starred in perhaps the best World Cup tournament of all time in 1982. He scored the opening goal in the final, but who will ever forget Marco Tardelli’s goal celebration for the third goal. Rossi scored a hat trick in the most wonderful game I have ever seen in that tournament against Brazil. I am not alone in thinking this. I was on the floor when I heard Bobby Charlton, who must have been part of the commentary team, say that this was the best game that he had ever seen in his life.

RIP Paolo

A controversial figure and a proper goal machine who somewhat redeemed himself in the 1982 World Cup. Rossi scored 3 to sink an outstanding Brazil team in possibly the greatest game i ever saw

Sad news

The first World Cup I remember, made even better as a kid seeing Burnley players there and Billy Hamilton scoring twice against Austria. As Wellernut says the Brazil game was amazing to watch.

Just heard the sad news as I was driving.
My favourite football team of all time was the 1982 Italy side....and my favourite World Cup too.
Yes Rossi should not have played after letting him come back early from his bribery ban but that aside (!!) he was a very natural finisher.
Italy had some great players in that side and brilliant team spirit too. Brazil should have probably beat them and in typical Italy fashion they struggled to get out of their group (think they might have drawn all their games ?). But as they usually do they got better as the tournament progressed. They drew against Argentina with a young Maradona, beat Brazil in that iconic 3-2 game and then comfortably beat Poland in semis.
Germany were the tournament favourites and has a very strong side but in the final they never got near Italy (who aswell as being 3-0 up also missed a penalty in first half)

Rossi scored in the final, took the golden boot and became an Italian legend.

Exactly my feelings, fella.

I remember staying up late for the France v Germany ?semi final? with THAT Scumacher foul on Battiston. I remember it as the first time I have ever felt gutted and cheated...at the age of 8 some innocence was lost :(

RIP Paolo

Excellent player and very sharp near the goals, very sleek.
I remember well that 1982 WC (and his star roll in it). I had an Italian neighbour who was very quiet usually but (knowing I was into footy) came round my house immediately after the final with effervescence (of mood and in a bottle); he was desperate to share his joy with somebody. I'm sure many Italians will have felt the same joy and remember that with gratitude today.
RIP Signor Rossi.

Yes I know I shouldn't have and I'll probably get into trouble for it and it really is genuinely sad that a football legend has died at such a young age......but I did spit me brew out and couldn't stop laughing.   (Sorry!)

Other than his World Cup exploits in 1982 I've little or no idea what else he achieved either at club or international level.

One summer whilst a Juventus player he painted the entire Distinti Est stand in the Stadio Olimpico in tribute to his hero Michelangelo.

In March ‘83, Aston Villa as the reigning European Champions, drew Juventus in the Quarter Finals. The first leg was played at Villa Park, and my dad got a couple of tickets through a business colleague from Birmingham. Me and a mate went to the game, and were still queuing up to get on the Holte End when Rossi scored in the first minute! Villa drew level then Boniek got the winner for Juve. Villa lost over 2 legs, Platini scored twice in the second leg. Juve lost in the final that year to Hamburg.
RIP Paolo.
