Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
Yes..I know it's the ever-unreliable Daily Mail but they are reporting that we have "reopened talks"

Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
I like Tarkowski but not sure we should pay stupid wages for him which other clubs will do. He wants to further his England aspirations ( although players don’t go unoticed here with Southgate bring a regular visitor) too. From a business sense cashing in may be a good idea BUT only if the new owners have put a better recruitment system and strategy in place instead of the the current shambolic set up. I am not confident at present that we are capable of reinvesting wisely.

The club have dropped the ball a bit with this one. We shouldn't be a club that stands in the way of talented players progressing. We've had plenty of time to recruit a replacement, as we did with Tarks for Keane.

We certainly aren't a club that stands in a player's way.ArmchairDetective wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 10:26 amThe club have dropped the ball a bit with this one. If he signs a new contract it's because he wants to. If he doesn't, we'll sell.

We need to get shut if his heart isn't in the right place. Take the money and replace him,we are good at that..

Who was the scout who recommended Tarks and Pope? If they’ve left can we not re-recruit them?

Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
Keep him at all costs. He's literally the difference between us staying up or going down this season imo. We're known for our defensive solidity which he's key to so it would be a disaster to lose him with not enough time for a replacement to be bedded in alongside Ben mee
Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
According to BBC Sport, Utd are looking at quite a few CB's but Tarks not mentioned recently
If we could get Utd to bite then a sizeable chunk of money plus a couple of loans would be the answer to me

Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
It was Billy Mercer that suggested Pope.
He had seen him play whilst on loan at York City and followed his progress
There was an article in The Athletic on him
It was 2014 and Mercer decided to take in a League Two match at York City. In goal for the home side was a young Nick Pope, on loan from Charlton Athletic.
“I remember watching him come for a few crosses and I just thought, ‘Wow, he’s got something’,” says Mercer.
When it came to recruiting goalkeepers, Burnley’s scouts would watch games and if they were impressed, Mercer would take a closer look.
While Tom Heaton was a signing Dyche wanted, when it came to Pope, having watched him almost by accident at York, Mercer worked closely with chief scout Martin Hodge — another former goalkeeper — on monitoring him further. He remained on his radar and when Charlton got relegated from the Championship in 2016 at the same time Burnley were leaving that division as title winners, making a move for a then 24-year-old Pope became a no-brainer.

I get that. But if we had someone ready to step up in the current squad Dyche wouldn't have had to refuse. Poor planning IMO.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 10:44 amIt was Dyche who refused to sell him, Garlick had accepted a bid for him.
For the record I'd be delighted if Tarks decides to stay at the Turf. He makes a huge difference to our team, as does Ben.

Don't worry, Jones is on a deal at Man Utd until June 2023 and allegedly is on £75 per week. The only way I could see him coming to TM is if he came on loan to cover Tarky's exit in January and if United stumped up some of the wages.
His last game in the EPL was vs the Clarets last January.

Also re Jones from the Man Utd Web Site:
“Phil has been injured and he had an operation and he’s been working really hard to get back. He’ll hopefully get fit during December.”

Dyche has had the luxury of being able to change that and only sell on his terms.

once chip might be a rearranged clause in his contract allowing him to speak to clubs in exchange for another year on his contract and an immediate increase in wages

If Tarkowski wants to move on, hopefully an agreement that he stays to the end of the season to help secure our PL status will suit everyone. He can then choose his career path and I'm hoping Bobby Thomas will be ready to step up.
New owners may have a different agenda of course.

Tarks is a good defender, in our system.
He’s average in a more open and expansive system. But like Slabhead getting found out at United.
Playing higher up the pitch exposes his limitations, static body, limited pace and so on.

We would be dead certs for relegation if Tarkowski had been sold and the same applies in the January window.
Deriictiion of duty from the board if Tarkowski is sold this season as we don't have a worthy replacement.

Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
Mepham from Bournemouth or Tomori from Chelsea are more likely replacements than Jones and I believe there was a European based player who was linked in the last window but can't remember his name at the moment and reported to be still available in January and keen to move to the Premier League. Keeping Tarkowski would be good for the club provided his head is in the right place but I'm not sure it is sadly but I'm sure the club will do the right thing from their and his points of view.

Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
If the club is considering selling Tarks in January, then they'd better have a ready made replacement in the wings, and no Dunne, Long & Thomas don't count, we need someone that can immediately slot in alongside Ben. Shame to lose Tarks but if he genuinely wants out then all we can do is drive a hard bargain, and hopefully attain a fair price for him, which can then be reinvested in incomings to improve the squad.
So that would ideally include centre-back ,centre-mid, right-winger & possibly right-back, although the latter can probably wait until the summer.
It's worth noting that Tarkowski played in 4 of our first 6 PL games, and only at West Brom did we keep a clean sheet, it's only with the return of Ben Mee that the defence has started looking more secure, and arguably he's a more vital cog in the Clarets machine, as evidenced by the number of different defensive partners he's been paired with throughout his Burnley career.

Ben is definitely the main man. He taught both Keane and Tarky how to play CH. He's indispensable.tiger76 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 3:26 pmIf the club is considering selling Tarks in January, then they'd better have a ready made replacement in the wings, and no Dunne, Long & Thomas don't count, we need someone that can immediately slot in alongside Ben. Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
I just wonder how Tarks would fit into an attacking team. Our style or should I say our weakness in being on the defensive most games suits he and Mee. He's cerainly no ball playing CH in the Lawrenson Hanson mode, though things have moved on since them.
Jones, who was Man U's MOM last time I saw him at Turf Moor would be a good a replacement I think
As you guys will.know we are currently being linked with a few CH's. Then there is the Gibson issue.

I’d agree with that, he’s slow as hell and stiff, proper donkey on the ball. His passings genuinely woeful too yet he seems to think he’s BeckenbaurDanieljwaterhouse wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 12:58 pmTarks is a good defender, in our system.

Would be better to keep Tarks at least until the end of the season and also to bring in Jones to beef up midfield and provide long-term cover for Tarks and/or a new right back.
SD would have time to work on his fitness levels to bring him back to the international standard.

Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
Bobby Thomas is a great example I feel of not forming opinions of a player immediately which we are all prone to do with young players when they first arrive. In his first year in the youth team I really wasn't sure about him and wasn't surprised in year two when he was sent out to Kendal Town on loan.Danieljwaterhouse wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 12:59 pmInteresting one is Thomas, better suited to a more expansive system perhaps? It all seemed to change for him when he returned from Kendal and found himself pushed into the under-23s because of injuries to other players. I thought it was an opportunity he had to take and he damn well took it. By the end the 2018/19 season he looked a completely different player to. Last season, up to lockdown, he just continued to progress and begin to look a real prospect.
Then he got the debut against Millwall in the League Cup. I know he wasn't up against an Agüero or a Kane but we played against a very experienced Matt Smith that night and he's difficult to play against. I'm told that Dyche was absolutely revelling in his and Jimmy Dunne's performance after that game and no surprise either. Both outstanding, Thomas even more so.
He's still just 19 (20 next month) which is young for a central defender, but he does look to have the potential to go on to be a very good player.

Is it not worth trying to get Thomas out on loan somewhere? I'm sure he'd learn far more playing in League 1 than a few under 23s games.

They are looking to get players out on loan and I would think Bobby Thomas will be one of them. Josh Benson talks so much about how much he learned at Grimsby in League Two last season, getting used to playing in front of crowds. Thomas will benefit if we can get him out to a decent club.

Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
To suggest we have stood in Tarks' way by not allowing him a move is ridiculous - nobody has offered anywhere near his true value. In the current market, £30m for a top, top CH is laughable - second best defensive stats in the Prem last season (first was Champion VVD). I have absolutely no problem allowing players to further their careers, in fact think we should build our team around that ethos, but not if clubs offer derisory fee's.
I still hold out hope Tarks may sign an extension. As I see it, he has 18 months to run, there must be a way to offer him: a decent rise so that he earns more immediately and ongoing, better security against injuries, etc, and a reasonable release fee with a good slice going to him. He may still leave in summer of course, we just secure him if no offers come in.
It's a massive NO for me on Jones. Anybody recommending his signing obviously hasn't followed his injuries. He's made of glass. I'm sure United would gladly pay half his wages if we agreed to pay the other half but it would still be a waste of money.

Re: Is all not lost re Tarkowski yet ?
I haven't seen young Thomas play, but it's a big ask to expect him to step straight into Tarkowski's shoes, yes he's apparently showing promise, and if we were in the Championship he might be up to the task, but to throw him into the heat of a PL relegation scrap is putting immense pressure on his young shoulders.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 5:13 pmHow about keeping Thomas and actually using him in our first team
