Very good point.

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Thu Dec 17, 2020 7:52 pm

A draw would’ve been decent beforehand. But on the balance even better. Especially with the amount of the ball they had.

To keep a player like grealish as uninfulential was we did is impressive and the back five in particular were superb.

Just need that pace and spark going forward. But the progress continues. No teams around us gained any points on us again.

Well done Dyche and the boys.

If they could finish we would have lost that 6 or 7. Definitely dodged a bullet

Yes, very good point could easily have lost that but didn't play too badly. Dogged defence with one or two chances for us. We would have taken 4 points from 2 very hard away games this last few days before kick off so a good return overall.

Brought about by some World Class 'How not to Score' from Villa.

We defended well apart from the times we were literally ripped a new one.

27 shots from Villa and on another day that could have been 7 for them again.

Let's hope we've learned something.

And we desperately need 2-3 players in January.

We’re very solid in defence and Pope was excellent. Just lacking up front. We had a few chances to steal a win but overall they were the better team.

Move on. A new challenge awaits!

I think we are lacking in midfield too. Hard working yes, able to readily supplement attack, no.

I though McNeil did OK first half and carried the ball very well on a few occasions, second half though, he was very disappointing and defensively, something of a liability on a couple of occasions.

We need more depth and a bit more quality to add to the squad. Happy with a point though.

Decent point, but is that 4 goals scored in 12 games now? We can't keep relying on the back 5 to keep a clean sheet every game.

Lots of those shots were long range or more speculative efforts from wide.

First half was pretty even on good chances. Second half they created much more.

Good point- Villa are much better than last season and Grealish is a class above

That's exactly what we rely on in every game.

We scored 43 goals last season, conceded 50.

Nick Pope was 2nd in the golden glove with 15 clean sheets...

The shots they had we let them have. That’s how we play. We restricted them to powderpuff and speculative efforts. And those that weren’t we got bodies or Pope behind them. Was a typical defensive performance from us.

Goals for are a rare commodity.Thank the lord we have Pope , Mee and Tarks (for now). Club should do all they can to keep Tarks. Where are some goals going to come from? Some work to do on that one.

A briiliant point v a very good side and strong defence. I have said it before but in January if we mean business we need a "proper " striker. 6 goals in 12 games says everything, with one of those an own goal. Vydra is not going to score if we played him every game, Barnes has lost his edge, and Jay has been poor the last 3 or 4 games. My suggestion would be Josh King, who would suit our style of play. Tough, quick, good in the air and mobile. He will nick us 3 points in games like tonight. We also need a proper right winger. Despite Robbie putting in a proper shift tonight, he had the chance to cross it with his right foot, but cut back to his left and offered several shocking attempts to cross.

Why?

We can win with just one on target.

I'm fairly sure a team has won a game with no shots on target thanks to own goals

Good shout with King bit of pace and good feet just what we’re missing.

I’d put Brady on left McNeil is offering nothing at moment, out of form which is understandable given he was on fire when he first came into the team, needs a rest.

We gave the ball away too much tonight , especially in the second half.
Great defending though as we all witnessed, against a side that score freely .

Spot on

No point in moaning about two strikers offering nothing when they get no service

That just heaps more pressure on our back four as the ball continually gets swept up by their defense from our hoof balls

Until we can get some strength in cm play five there and try and get some control within the game

Yes I know we have come away with 4 fantastic points from the last two games but we have to be realistic about how fortunate we have been in both matches

Good point. We were poor but defended well.

Those who think we should let Tarks go in Jan to secure a fee must be bonkers. So vital to staying up this year.

Not a fan of Lowton to be honest but thought he did well tonight and is in a good run of form. Pope, Charlie, Ben & Tarks exceptional as usual. Westy and Brownhill industrious but otherwise average. McNeil good first half, second poor and wasted a great FK at the end. Brady poor.

Need a creative right sided midfielder to replace Brady/JBG and arguably a striker.

SD and Popey mentioned after the game that we were not at our normal levels once you got past the defence. It is no good blaming strikers when I don't think either wideman or full back got a decent cross in tonight - unless it was Brady putting the ball in for the Wood header? Not one of the free kicks played into the box was particularly decent either

27 shots....how many went in? I’d say that was solid defending.

Half of the so called shots are well wide of the goal or miles above. However, they certainly had their chances and the result could have been very different.

27 shots that were more the fault of midfield giving it away and hoofball coming straight back at us - if the defence weren't solid we'd have been beaten 7-0

Agree a good point, 4 points from 2 difficult away games, 2 clean sheets. Out of the relegation zone and a nice little run of games to come. I was worried initially we’d be adrift before January, now we’re slowly building and adding points to the table, January should only make us significantly stronger.

Let’s be clear. They only had 3 (three) more shots on target than our 4 (four). For a team that’s meant to free flowing and attacking (who scored 7 against the Champions) 20 (twenty) of their shots we let them have from distance and would never trouble us (bar 2 that hit woodwork)

Gotta class it as a great point when you've been player off the park for 90 mins by a much better side. They'll be plenty of poorer teams than Villa who beat us this season so I think we have to take tonights result as a real positive

This is what our defence does and has done ever since Dyche got his hands on them.

They restrict the opposition to longer range shots, minimise the angle of shots on target and protect the keeper very well.

We can sit and bat the number of shots around all weekend if you're bored but 7 shots on target isn't worth having a tantrum about tbh.
