Which position would you advise ALK to prioritise and why?

Technical, pacey midfielder. Someone who can collect the ball from the defence and give the forwards more support.

go down this list until its a reasonable price and the player wants to come...

Re: If we were to buy a QUALITY £25 million player...
We need a right footed Charlie Taylor.
An excellent defender who is quick enough to provide an attacking threat on the right and is tall enough to intercept the long cross-field passes that most opponents currently use.
It is clear that coaches see our right flank as a weakness and are setting up to attack that side. Traore is all-right footed but I wouldn’t be surprised if Wolves switch him to the left if he draws a blank against Taylor.

Perfect player for Burnley and how we play and I believe with him in the side and a relatively injury free season we would easily be top 10

There's no way Norwich will sell in the next window, they are well on course to make an instant PL return, Cantwell will probably be out of our reach even if the takeover goes through, however Buendia is a great shout and exactly the type we need still only 23, and he can play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, doubt either we'll be heading to TM anytime soon though alas.

Buendia top pick for me. Agree Norwich are unlikely to sell but he is JUST what we need so I would go all out for him. He's confident on the ball, plays one touch to keep the play moving, plays great through balls, assists, scores, and does the defensive duties. High work rate so a typical Dyche player but with a touch of class - would transform us IMO. Now heavily linked with Arsenal, so likely out of reach but if the new owners do want to make a statement, I'd just go all in for him. You'd expect £25m could secure him - similar fee to Maddison and other Championship players - plus Norwich are not short of midfielders that could step in without weakening them too much (Cantwell being an example as he's been benched a lot). Need to act quickly and decisively to stand any chance of signing that type of quality player, and as you say Tiger, can't see it.
Harry Wilson is another, likely cheaper and more attainable player. I've watched all Cardiff's highlights this year to see how he's been getting on and he does look a miss. Can't work out whether he's a winger or a 10. Seems to appear centrally most often, but scored a great goal in the last game coming in off the wing and showed his raw pace. I'd take him. A midfield five with Westy & Brownhill sat deep and Buendia - Wilson - McNiel would be something to get excited about. Not sure of how his loan works with Cardiff and whether he's committed for the full season though.
In defence, I like the look of that Mohamed Simakan we were linked with, but it looks like he's off to Milan. Might all be paper talk though, so I'd go for him as he plays RB/ right CH so possible to blood him at RB and move him inside if Tarks leaves. He's a beast, massive, strong, quick.
I also liked that Joakim Maehle we were linked with. Again, tall, fast, good feet, scores a few. A right sided Charlie Taylor, but its hard to know the standard difference between the two leagues and if that makes him look better than he is.

Re: If we were to buy a QUALITY £25 million player...
If we were spending that kind of money on only one player then the position would have to be a midfielder - a key player who can run games.
However, I think this takeover is more likely to mean that we can afford to sign some players worth £10-18m maybe and compete with higher wages.

Oh! aye quality player he's played 349 minutes for Sheff Utd this season, and he's yet to find the net, no wonder CW benched him last night.
What did they pay for him £23m, Liverpool have had their pants down with that transfer, Klopp must be laughing all the way to the bank.

It’s true it’s very easy to waste £25m so transfer funds are not guaranteed to improve us. But I trust Dyche to spend wisely.
Players like Brewster may also come good. Fold were calling Adam’s a flop at certain points.

Re: If we were to buy a QUALITY £25 million player...
Brewster may still come good, the problem for Sheff Utd is they need goals and wins now, not in a few months time.
And he's not the only big money striker that Sheff Utd have splashed out on Oli Mcburnie springs instantly to mind.
They got away with scoring so few goals last season, but it's rapidly catching up with them this term, and relegation looks inevitable even this early in the season.
Re: If we were to buy a QUALITY £25 million player...
He’s a young kid who’s barely been given a chance yet, was brilliant for Swansea last year. In a few years time, hell be an excellent striker, like Solanke imo.tiger76 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 18, 2020 3:45 pmOh! aye quality player he's played 349 minutes for Sheff Utd this season, and he's yet to find the net, no wonder CW benched him last night.

No point signing a rapid striker with nobody to play him in!
But I agree come summer, if we got some pace on the right and a creative midfielder, there’s a decision to take on our strikers and letting one go to create a space for a really quick striker may help move us forward. I’d sell Barnes.
No idea on who I’d like us to sign though.

I’ll be pretty disappointed if the takeover only allows us to compete in that range - which we’ve effectively been capable of competing in previously (several £15m signings + rumoured £20m offer for Phillips).Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Fri Dec 18, 2020 3:26 pm

I’m hoping it’ll take us to the next level - £20-£25m.
Also don’t want/expect complete upheaval. A couple of signings in Jan and then 1 per window would do me, but quality over quantity.

The transfer fee often dictates the salary required.
A £25 million player will push our wage ceiling higher, this is not only relevant to the player coming in but all the other senior players at the club.
You pay one player far more than our maximum wage is at present and Pope, Tarkowski, Mee etc will want parity, before you know it our wage bill is approaching our total income and we will be on very dangerous ground.
Bolton & Blackburn did the same thing and before they could blink they had huge debts, this was before they were relegated from the Premier League.

Re: If we were to buy a QUALITY £25 million player...
Agree with your points and if I were ALK, I’d make the holy Trinity our highest paid players with new contracts immediately. Even if it didn’t stop them moving on eventually, I’d rather they felt we were treating them fairly. We value all of them well over £25m so no reason they shouldn’t earn what we’d pay such a player. What I’m saying is - I wouldn’t bring in anyone above those existing players.Goody1975 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 18, 2020 7:01 pmThe transfer fee often dictates the salary required.

In respect to Buendia and Wilson - who I’ve promoted - I’d heard Buendia was on £8k per. Not sure if that changed after promotion or subsequent relegation, but you’d imagine we could substantially better that. Likewise Wilson at Cardiff. I also mentioned Simakan who has allegedly agreed a salary of €1-1.5m with Milan - well within our gift.
I agree it’s a tough balance and one ALK will have to manage carefully. I’d do it by banking on a well paid core - Pope, Mee, Tarks, +2/3, potentially funding that by phasing out a few other “higher earners” such as Brady, Stephens, Bards to fund that, then add one or two decent young signings to balance the books. Bright Osayi-Samuel doesn’t look a world beater to me but could effectively fill a wing position on less than Brady for example.
Easy to forget that Stephen’s aside we reduced our wage bill by ~£8m last season. Accepting we’ll have taken a big hit due to covid, that leaves ALK a better position than they’d otherwise have been in.
They’ll have to speculate a bit to accumulate though, which I’m sure will be very uncomfortable for us, having been so prudently run for so many years. Not necessarily a bad thing if approached sensibly.

Same old problem. It’s not the transfer fee that’s the problem, it s the player fitting in to the wage structure. Even spending 25-30 guarantees you nothing. Look how much Sheffield Utd spent on Brewster and palace on benteke. It’s not always the costliest players that perform the best

I believe in simple terms the players wage usually reflects the fee. So, for example, if we buy someone for £15m they will likely earn the same amount over, say, a four year contract.

Even with the extra leeway I wouldn't expect us to go mad, and if there is bargains to be had then we certainly shouldn't turn our nose up at them.
Agree on the evolution not revolution, if we could get a RW in January (BOS?), and possibly Tarks successor, with maybe an attacking CM, that would constitute a decent window, we don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water, and our team spirit is the most important aspect of our success.
Even with Cork extending we've still got a few out of contract next summer, so we'll have some decisions to make on those ASAP.
It's also worth remembering that the likes of Benson, Dunne, Goodridge, Richardson & Thomas may yet stake a claim for a 1st team place, and if we have the talent coming through, then it'd be folly to hold them back, if they're good enough, and that's of course the big question, which only the manager and coaches can answer.
Re: If we were to buy a QUALITY £25 million player...
It's only a David Brooke's and Che Adam that.... 2 ideal players and the sort we need.

Right back and right midfield have to be the priorities. Somebody mentioned Bobby Thomas above, has anyone kept a close eye his progress, I thought he looked like a real prospect at centre half!
Re: If we were to buy a QUALITY £25 million player...
For ALK’s benefit, Factual Frank has the right answer. An athletic and technically strong central midfielder who is always looking for the forward pass and can connect our midfield and forward play.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Fri Dec 18, 2020 11:26 amTechnical, pacey midfielder. IMO Brownhill and Westwood are very good players BUT are too similar in style to play together. A younger version of Jack Cork would do nicely!
