Re: chess puzzle
No because there wouldn't be anything to protect the queen from the King
Re: chess puzzle
Yes there would. The bishop

WK to C4 check
Black can either take the K with his castle or move his King to the one available square, either way he's done for

What about the pawn?
That can move diagonal to take the queen

Haven't played chess for donkey's years but I'm thinking white rook to e3 - check. Black king then only has one move ....to c6. Queen takes black pawn at e7 and I think that's game over?

d3 to e3 putting black in check and forcing the king to move to d6.
Then queen from f7 to e7 taking the pawn and check mate because the queen is protected by the bishop on g4.

Knight to c4 first definitely and that's checkmate

We were thinking the same thing dibraidio but, on reflection, either the black knight or black rook could defend the king at e4 (I think!)

Re: chess puzzle
I need to work through the variations but i think first move might be Rook D3-E3
I think Black has 3 options
Black can move King to D6 which I think will open up a mating opportunity
Black can block with Rook D4-E4 which I think will open up a mating opportunity
Black can block with Knight F2-E4 which White can mate with Knight B2-C4
Just need to check you can mate after top two black defenses and that there's no other defensive move for Black but this is my first stab at it
Edit:
If Black Rook blocks then Queen to D5 mate
If Black King escapes to D6 then Queen takes Pawn on E7 mate
Happy to be proven wrong but that looks to work for me

Knight move c4 then rook has to take and then move queen next to king on d5 and it is checkmate

Re: chess puzzle
As per my explanation I think Dibradio is correct but black has a couple of additional defensive options which ive played out but all lead to mate in two.
The first move is the key to the puzzle and I have come to the same conclusion as Dibradio so unless there's another defensive option we've missed I think thats it

Kick the board over and stomp out of the room, go up to bed and shout "F*** you thats the last time I am playing chess with you......"

See my post above. The king can then get out of it even if the castle takes the castle.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 12:54 pmAs per my explanation I think Dibradio is correct but black has a couple of additional defensive options which ive played out but all lead to mate in two.

Definitely mate. The first move is 100% correct and then once the Queen is moved is checkmate, I've checked it 10 times and its definitely checkmateDevils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 12:54 pmAs per my explanation I think Dibradio is correct but black has a couple of additional defensive options which ive played out but all lead to mate in two.

No I don't have the answer. I feel like I've tried every possible move so I know why most aren't correct and I think I'll know when I see the right answer. I've been told it is possible though

Yep I realised as I got confused with who was talking about what but if Black Rook blocks the White Queen has a mating square. Re: chess puzzle
Personally I would go bishop g5 to e3 and make black suffer as you split the knight and the rook.
Another solution then: Queen F7 to E7 taking the pawn and putting black in check.
The black king can only move from e5 to f5.
Then move the queen from e7 to E5 for mate with the queen protected by the bishop.
