premier league heaviest defeats query.
watching liverpool destroying palace by 7 goals got me thinking about some of the hammerings other teams in the division have suffered. I am no statistics man, but don't recall anyone doing this much damage to us in the top flight. there have been several teams that have had five or six put past them. does anyone know just how bad it got for them.
from the current crop of teams in the division, we dont seem to have fared too badly.

Re: premier league heaviest defeats query.
Man Utd 8 Watford 0
Southampton 0 Leicester 9
Villa 7 Liverpool 2
And that's just from last season, I'm sure there's plenty more.
Our biggest PL defeat from memory is the 6-1 at home to Man City, thankfully they took their foot off the gas in the 2nd half, I think it was 5-0 at the break, and it could have been more.
We've had a few 4/5 goal drubbings, but generally they've been against City, Liverpool & Spurs.
It will be interesting to see what affect today has on Palace over the next few games. I suspect they will bounce back though, Roy is an old hand, and he won't panic.

Sure someone hit double figures while Ian Wright was still playing for them, it was probably pre Premier Days

List of biggest winning margins and highest scoring games.
Some suprising results there, I'd forgotten about Boro smashing Man City.

Yeah remember the 1-6 one.
Even the Citeh fans were singing "what the f**k is going on? " when the fifth goal went in.
Resisted the temptation to leave at half time as it was wazzing it down (and as I remember Steve Fletcher scored a great 'consolation' goal)

We twice lost by 10 in the 1920's - once to Aston Villa and once to Sheffield United. One of them was the first game of the season immediately after they had changed the offside law from 3 defenders to 2 defenders - evidently our full backs hadn't been told!

They did happen to mention we lost 8..0 in 1928 to Liverpool.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 10:52 pmwatching liverpool destroying palace by 7 goals got me thinking about some of the hammerings other teams in the division have suffered. Re: premier league heaviest defeats query.
Given the perspective of 45 years watching Burnley, I can rationalise 4's and 5's at City, Spurs and Liverpool ... It was the 0-6 home defeat to Hereford that got me a little upset !tiger76 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 11:02 pmWe've had a few 4/5 goal drubbings, but generally they've been against City, Liverpool & Spurs.

Re: premier league heaviest defeats query.
Didn't Spurs whack Wigan 10-1 and the Wigan fans got their money back?
Defoe donated some money to help save Wigan this year because of it.

Re: premier league heaviest defeats query.
Ipswich getting beat 9 nil at Old Trafford in the 90s is one that always springs to mind.

Spurs have given us some thumpings over the years. In 1968 we managed to lose 12-0 over two games, albeit different seasons.

Tim was there.
Re: premier league heaviest defeats query.
I remember the Spurs 9 Wigan 1 game , and the Portsmouth 7 Reading 4 games, I think the latter is the highest scoring game isnt it?
Both were 10+ years ago, when I watched every bit of football going.
Jermaine Defoe scored a hat full against Wigan that day, and recently donated x amount of cash per goal to help save them in there recent financial trouble when a fan tweeted him .

Re: premier league heaviest defeats query.
Just looked that game up, and the bizarre fact is Ipswich had beaten Utd 3-2 in the reverse fixture at Portman Road earlier in the season.
As the saying goes it's a funny old game.
Sadly that was the season Utd finished 1 point behind Rovers, so that defeat was damaging to them, Ipswich of course were relegated.

Re: premier league heaviest defeats query.
True! and yet Liverpool are now threatening to pull clear at the summit, and Man Utd aren't that far off the pace either, that day must rank as the weirdest in PL history, for 2 famous clubs to both be on the end of hidings within a few hours of each other has to be unique surely, certainly in the modern era.Claret Till I Die wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 9:15 amLiverpool were battered this season by Villa on the same day Man Utd leaked 6 against Spurs

I remember when Newcastle potted Gullit after he dropped Shearer. I think they won the next game 8-0 and Shearer scored five. I forget who they were playing.
Didn't Wigan lose at Spurs by the same scoreline a few years back? Defoe bagged five I think.

Pre PL but Burnley shipped 8 at West Brom in 67/8 I think Harry Thomson saved a pen as well
